86 is almost 90 in a fairly roundy-uppy sort of mathematical way. That means trade deadline is very rapidly approaching and a last change for some teams to make a push - be it for playoffs or lottery is another matter. I'm gonna let you know a little of how my thought process goes as we look at today's games... not for any reason other than it's fun.
Injuries - first place I look is always injury list - become a habit with a Stars squad and I almost peek between my fingers to check if one of my main guys is taking another vacation.. none today! West goes down for 21 which isn't that unexpected as he's stayed and played pretty well so far this year... otherwise a few games here and there to some important players like Pau who slips for one.
Mike Conley 2
Tom Heinsohn 1
Jerry West 21
Jeff Teague 3
Pau Gasol 1
Greg Monroe 1
2nd place I look is the ratings. Not because I want to see if my guys are tops (although hey, that's a fun thing if they are), but because it's an early clue if my team are playing and whether or not they got the W. Total Rating today has Brand a surprise at the top... a little further down I Curry and I start to worry as the opponent is Utah but no Utah guys in the top 10... my paranoia kicks in and I'm sure we're not only playing but lost to the best team in the ABA so far this year damn it.

I'm a huge fan of defensive guys. Stars are a defensive team, but not an individual type team so I'm not devastated if we don't have a string of guys here... Duncan is the guy we like to see and at number 2 today that's starting to look like a chance of an upset.

First game of the day and wouldn't you know it the Squires visiting the flats of Utah for a top two matchup in the ABA (though only just as the pesky Qs continue to hold off that losing streak). Stars get the early lead and go up 10 at the start of the second but it's the third before they stretch the offense a little. Stars hold teams usually around 106 per game, but Virginia's not an average offensive team so Stars had to play their best O game. Good news for Stars is that Westphal, Frazier, Duncan and Rudy T were all on fire and luckily Curry didn't get enough help from his team as they shot 46% to a blistering 60% for the Stars as they cruise out to a surprisingly easy 25 point win at home. Return game in Ginny won't be this way, but we enjoy it today. 42 assists for Utah is high. Pulls Stars within 1.5 of Virginia which is about the closest it's been in a long while... but Squires are leading the ABA for a reason and expect a bounce-back from this one.

Amigos have been hot recently wining 8 of 10 and one of the best home teams. They probably thought the Royals didn't represent much of a challenge but as the game entered OVERTIME, they were left to reconsider that. What they may not have realised is that at .42 the Royals are actually in a playoff position in the NBA conference! A win today would consolidate that position. Twyman was firing with Haywood and Jackson to keep them in it through a struggling fourth that saw the Amigos tie it on a Googs mid-range. And Googs surged in OT to squeak out the win for the home-town Amigos. Royals had a shot for the win but Marbury's desperation 3 was short and that one ended up in the books. Check out Anaheim at 10 games over .500! 0.41 for Royals STILL has them playoff bound (although a first round sweep against the Magic would be the likely outcome I guess).

Claws travel to Jersey to face the Americanos. Americans are in a huge scrap for the playoffs with Pittsburgh and Trenton... interestingly they're not one of the teams promising a berth in the playoffs, but they do get the comprehensive win today in NJ thanks to good shooting from Stackhouse, Wade and Timbug. Claws are playing the lottery game again this year... I hope it goes better for them this time or we'll all hear about it for sure!

Battle of teams that play in hot places sees the Suns pitched against the Magic. Magic are the best team in the league playing at home and Phoenix aren't likely making the playoffs - they're a good team when playing at home but have only picked up 5 chips on the road so this was always a long shot. Give the Suns credit - they end up within 10 of the Magic, but a brutal third quarter run meant that they were always playing for respect rather than the W. Elton Brand was ridiculous tonight. 35 points on 17 shots (14 out of 17) and 9 boards in the 32 minutes he played before fouling out. Nice double-double matchup between Bledsoe of the Suns and Wall of the Magic.

Qs with a difficult road game in Miami who don't want to get pulled into the melee for the bottom end of the playoffs in the ABA... Qs don't care, they've got primetime Kobe Bryant who is tearing up the league right now and rookie star Walt Bellamy. The result is a close game that neither team wanted to lose. Qs sit just a game behind the Stars and want that second seed... Qs jump out early to a 10 point lead but Miami chips away at it all game to take the lead in the final quarter thanks mostly to Lou Hudson. But Kobe and Bellamy in the final minutes were clutch and rollout winners 103-100. Shame really for the Stars, but I love the battle that now looks like 7-11 positions in the ABA... wow!

Huge matchup in Toronto as the Wizards take their star-studded team North of the Border to matchup against the talented Raps. Back and forth we go all game long... Lanier v Malone, Walker v Adams... Adams again nearly shoots the Raps out the game, but comes up big in clutch time making his last 2 (before going just 3-12) to seal the deal for the home town Raps. Malone with 23 and 10 battled Laniers 25 and 12 to a standstill - both also dished 5 dimes. Great match and two great teams that may meet in the first round? That would be nice :) Both players lose a man due to exhaustion... Teague for Wiz and Gasol for Raps...

If there's a battle-royale going on at the bottom of the ABA it doesn't mean that it's smooth at the top. Squires losing today, Stars and Qs on a winstreak and here are Minnesota keeping pace and ahead of the hard-chasing Amigos! Lucky for the Muskies today as they hope the league's second worse team in the Oakland Oaks. Towns is the future (and mostly the present right now in Oakland). All old-school in the Minnesota camp - Scott and Naulls big today in the easy W.

Ty asked for a beat-each-other-up matchup between the Rockets and the hosting Pistons and this one didn't disappoint either. Hot start for Detroit, huge surge through 2 and 3 by the Rocks, then a massive fightback by the hometown Pistons leading to a game that came down to a shot to tie at the buzzer. Ball found Dr J with three ticks on the clock... back of the iron and over the backboard to seal the win for Houston giving them a tiny breathing space over Detroit and getting a nose in front of Washington (although Wiz probably happy the Pistons are slipping back with this L). Scoring damage today was Kawhi with 30 and Durant with 28. Jordan, Shaq and Dr J punched back for Detroit. Great game - both of these will be tough outs in the playoffs.
(37-14) Houston Rockets 25 34 39 25 - 123 (Kawhi Leonard 30)
(36-17) Detroit Pistons 36 22 25 37 - 120 (Michael Jordan 23)

Nationals have been very strong recently and they keep that going today with a high-scoring barn-busting affair in the city of Carolina. 147-142 to the Nationals over the Cougars and the crowd were treated to an explosive affair! Nash loves these type of games and goes 27 points and 10 dimes supported by Lebron's 26, 7 and 7. Old school Miller responded with a nice 17 and 13 double-double and Moses Malone showed he can run with the best going 32 points (but unusually quiet on the boards). Everyone was exhausted at the end > away team wins with 59% shooting over 53% to the home team. Great win for Syracuse without Robinson, Pippen and DeRozan.
