Amazingly I found out today that the Stars were leading the league in the defensive category of opponents PPG at just under 107 per outing. That's great news for us, but the recent trade we made was a recognition that there are two ends to the basketball court - we brought in Rudy T, Blake Griffin and Paul Westphal to add some offensive punch to a predominantly defensive side. But today, today I want to talk defense, why it's the poor cousin in most analysis and why it's the key.
Injuries
Walt Frazier 1 - the best combo guard defender in the league? Arguably and in many ways the leader of the Stars. I was actually disappointed when I drafted Walt as a regen the draft before last as I traded up (ironically Duncan) to get this spot with Butler. I wanted TMac... but Frazier is a defensive stud and a lot of our success depends on him (do we lose the next game because of this injury?)
Shawn Marion 4 - hold on Matrix is on my squad too what's going on? Marion has quietly been excellent for us in his last productive season. 15 rating in 27 minutes and over 3 on the defensive end. Injury will hurt but Gilmur is a good replacement who averages 1.2 steals and 1.8 blocks per 36.
Derrick Coleman 35 - much maligned but DC is a solid defender - he only plays 11 games in reality this year so a long absence is to be expected!

Defense first. Top player today is Timmy D and that's a good sign for us. He's not going to appear on any 'All-' teams this year and that's okay too. I nabbed Duncan back for his approach and that starts with his defensive end. Tops today with 6 blocks.

See how this list of total rating completely differs from the list above? In fact the top defensive players today don't make this list with the exception of Clyde Lovellette. That's where we've got it wrong... offense is everything... how many points did they score? Peja tops this list...

Peja tops this list too - great offense - his defensive rating today is 0.9. That's the definition of a one-way player (I'm not knocking Peja - great offensive guy) but our rating systems are wrong if we rate the best overall player as one who doesn't even bother with half the rating system.

Good game in New Jersey where the Americans are finding their form and the Cagers seem to be losing some of theirs. Pretty much a high scoring romp... not much D but Sam Jones got 4 steals for the Cagers and Neil Johnston (NJ in NJ is cool) got a couple of rejections. Americans win.

(16-28) Cleveland Caval 21 28 38 30 - 117 (Corey Maggette 19)
2nd game is also a good one between two middling teams unlikely to hit the post season play. Spencer Haywood was the half the reason the Royals won this one. Only 13 points but 10 boards (9 defensive), 2 blocks and 2 steals. 2nd reason for the W is Maravich and his 5 steals... yeah only 15 points and not great shooting, but defense got the W at the crucial end as he stole the ball to prevent a game tying attempt by the Cavs at the buzzer. Better shooting by Cleveland, better D by the Royals.

Forget everything I said and play Amigo ball at high pace high scoring! Both teams well over 50% and no looking back. Oaks didn't even realise they'd lost the game at the end it was so free flowing.

(17-27) Boston Celtics 36 38 23 37 - 134 (James Harden 28)
Nets have problems at both ends of the floor so defensively being very poor is not the only issue. Harden has been much maligned for his lack of D (James Haren?) but he did manage a couple of steals today agains the hapless Nets.

(27-16) Syracuse Nation 31 37 36 31 - 135 (Steve Nash 30)
Houston are struggling a bit and Syracuse are surging. Steve Nash today made the defensive team! Nah kidding his 30 in 30 were all pure O so he was 2nd on the hotshots despite no steals or blocks of course. Rockets are missing Favors and Gobert and they're soft in the middle without them it seems - only 2 blocks for the team without Gbert (see what I did there?!).

(15-28) Carolina Cougar 28 31 26 31 - 116 (Detlef Schrempf 22)
Good game for Pitt with a win over pesky Carolina. Should have played some D? Just 4 blocks and 7 steals for the Cougars v 5 and 9 for Pitt as well as allowing their opponents to go over 50% from the field. Sprewell 3 steals, 1 block and 0 chokes in the W and he squeaks on to the hot-shots team thanks to that (he wasn't on all offensive today) - but he's the only one!
