Day 36 in UBAS 5 and we're beginning to see some decent separation between the good teams and the not so good - we're rapidly approaching quarter point this year... who's got it?
Injuries
Shawn Marion 1 - yay only one player. Boo my player. And a starter at that - good time for Chicago to hit on the return leg?
( 1-18) Kansas City Ste 26 24 31 28 - 109 (Chet Walker 21)
(10- 9) Philadelphia Sp 24 27 34 30 - 115 (Max Zaslofsky 22)
Kansas are king of the have-nots at this point of the year and are on pace for (gulp) maybe 5 wins... that would be a record level of ineptitude that we've not seen before. Frankly I think they'll get closer to 10 but it still ain't going to be pretty (I bet they get one of those wins over the Knicks too). Despite the massive disparity in records the Steers gave the Sphas all they could handle and it took some late game heroics by Max Zaslofsky to secure the W for the home town Philly outfit.
( 8-11) Chicago Gears 25 30 37 27 - 119 (Tony Parker 32)
(14- 5) New York Knicks 28 29 33 33 - 123 (Baron Davis 29)
Knicks keep the win streak alive (5 games) by edging out the Lebron Gears thanks to twin 29 point games from their combo guards Baron Davis and Jerry West. 4 of 5 Knicks starters pick themselves (West, Matrix, Sikma and Mikan) but the PG spot is an interesting one and BDiddy is our other starter when he's fit (and Calderon when he's not). Tonight Davis was solid, if he shot a decent percentage he'd be one of the top guards in the league (but he doesn't!). Tony Parker is a top guard that has proved his value in recent years in UBA programming - tonight he tops all scorers with 32 but just enough 'logo' down the stretch to hold on for the Knicks. Given how close this one was at the Garden and with Marion going down (as well as DC already out) and out for the return leg it looks like the Knick win streak is in serious jeopardy next game in the windy city.
( 9-10) Milwaukee Bucks 30 29 41 37 - 137 (Peja Stojakovic 34)
( 4-14) Brooklyn Indian 22 39 32 41 - 134 (Dolph Schayes 31)
Bucks were touted as serious contenders but have got off to a pretty poor start thus far this year... that said a good away win today over the Durantless Indians and they're only a single game below .500. Not good enough in the NBA conference to book a playoff spot, but look for them to seriously improve over the next few weeks and months... oh and Eddie has been known to swing a blockbuster trade or two along the way.
(10- 9) Scranton Miners 33 31 38 31 - 133 (Blake Griffin 26)
(10- 9) Charlotte Bobca 20 35 31 42 - 128 (Oscar Schmidt 29)
Game of the day today was in Charlotte as the Bobcats and the Miners battled out a high scoring affair in front of a frenzied crowd. Blake Griffin was catching and dunking all game and Schmidt has always been able to find the hole. Did I mention how good the other Oscar was? Triple double of course and nearly enough to win it in a furious fourth quarter comeback. Did I say how much I love the trade that brought A-Train to Scranton? The teaming of him and Dr J is superb and I think the Miners will be a tough out for anyone this year and they're built for a deep playoff run too.
( 8-11) Chicago Crusade 34 27 38 21 13 - 133 (Kenny Sears 21)
(15- 4) Hawaii Chiefs 24 29 28 39 20 - 140 (Neil Johnston 26)
Chicago on a tough run of games and this surely was a tough one - 5 quarters of high scoring offense gave everyone the chance to get in the scoring column. Gotta love 20 points scored in overtime by the Chiefs to push the game beyond the visiting Crusaders. Chiefs are clearly still the pick of the bunch in the ABA conference.
(10- 9) Memphis Sounds 29 24 20 23 - 96 (Patrick Ewing 18)
( 8-11) Texas Chaparral 28 40 21 30 - 119 (Reggie Miller 19)
Memphis are good and the Teaxas outfit have looked a little shaky recently. Not tonight though, blitzing win in Texas as the Sounds can't seem to get close. Hold on just let me check who's actually on the Chaps roster... I knew they traded Dirk Diggler but couldn't remember who was on the revolving door for them! They've got Reggie and Gus at the guards and Amare provides punch up front, but how much will they miss Dirk if they get to the playoffs?
( 9- 9) Fort Wayne Pist 30 20 33 23 - 106 (Shareef AbdurRahim 29)
(15- 4) LA Lakers 31 22 22 32 - 107 (Tim Duncan 30)
Maybe I was early with the game of the day comment earlier? This one was as close as it can get and with the Pistons winning the game by a single point thanks in no short part to Shareef Abdul Rahim, Timmy Duncan does what he does and banks in the game winner with a few tenths of a second left on the clock and the Lakers escape from continuing their losing streak. I think the trade for Shareef has worked out well for the Pistons and they'll be good moving forwards and are another challenger for a playoff spot in the NBA.
( 9-10) Minnesota Piper 18 36 29 32 - 115 (Tracy McGrady 31)
(14- 5) Baltimore Bulle 24 38 20 35 - 117 (Bob Lanier 23)
And just when you thought we'd get no more close games there was another barnstormer between TMac and the Pipers of Minnesota and the surprisingly good Baltimore Bullets. No game winner but another tight finish and the Bullets were very happy to see the TMac triple at the buzzer roll and drop out and the home town hopeful erupted. Lanier had a really good game with his 23 points and 17 boards.
(11- 8) Seattle Superso 36 28 25 27 - 116 (Dave Bing 21)
( 8-12) Original Celtic 23 23 14 26 - 86 (Carmelo Anthony 20)
Blowout to finish the night and the Sonics show some of that tremendous promise they have by splattering the Melo lead Celtics all over the court. 30 point bottom spanking for the OC and a welcome point buffer for Seattle. OC crowd were gone by midway through the 3rd period and a 35 point deficit...
