Anyway, Christmas and basketball is a match made in heaven :)
Let's get under way and see how things are looking...
Injuries
Vlade Divac 1
Sidney Moncrief 1
Carmelo Anthony 2
Mark Davis 1
George Chestnut 2
( 6- 4) New York Rens 22 31 36 23 - 112 (Charles Barkley 20)
( 7- 3) Harlem Globetro 34 32 25 33 - 124 (Dwight Howard 22)
No gifts this Christmas states Dwight Howard as they use a big fourth quarter to snuff out the Rens hope of a big win against ABA rivals. Chuck and Davis were there doing their thing as usual with double-doubles but Dwight had a stat-line full of stuff... including 6 fouls. Here's a question, is Dwight Howard still considered the best centre in the game? Who's better? How about Mark Gasol? (how about Pau Gasol??). The game has changed a bit away from the big man of old and Howard once again finds himself as not the main man as Houston is 100% Harden's team. Still a useful guy and very sim-friendly. Rens are still going to be incredibly tough this year in the ABA - absolutely stacked and I think they will get some revenge on Harlem at some point :)
( 0-10) Dayton Metropol 29 19 29 18 - 95 (Russell Westbrook 15)
( 5- 6) Philadelphia Sp 38 34 33 36 - 141 (David Thompson 26)
Dayton is lead by Russell Westbrook and he is a talent. Unfortunately Dayton don't have much talent through the rest of their roster and when Kobe is off well, it's even worse... and an 0-10 start is testament to their ineptitude thus far. Philly win this one by 46 and loved every second of it. DT stayed on just long enough to get 26 points (in 25 mins) but everyone got plenty of game. Dayton does have Kobe and Vlade on the same team - those two will always be linked of course due to the trade that brought Kobe to the Lakers before ever playing a professional game (or college of course under the then rules of the game). Here's another question for you - should we be making guys do a year of college first? Why? If they're good enough to play at the highest level and old enough to have a job why not let them ball? Yes yes education I get it - but if you're not making guys do the whole of their education what's the point? What's next gymnasts having to do college before competing? They'd all be retired by the time they started. I say if the kids can play let them play (yes I'm expecting different opinions on this one).
( 7- 3) Golden State Wa 40 27 36 33 - 136 (Nick Anderson 29)
( 4- 6) New Orleans Hor 25 35 38 33 - 131 (Chris Bosh 37)
Warriors have made a very nice start to season 5. First four seasons they've been a difficult opponent without enough to make it to the dance. This year, maybe they can get in to the playoffs? If they do, they'll be troublesome. Not a great start to season 5 by the Hornets and they drop the ball again today and waste a great game by alien Chris Bosh along with solid games from Scottie and Webber. Nick Anderson stepped up big for GSW though and he was the difference maker in this one. I like the moves the Hornets have made this year, I still think they'll be around come the end of the season, they may end up battling the Warriors for the playoffs spot!
( 5- 6) Original Celtic 27 25 34 30 - 116 (Clifford Robinson 24)
( 5- 5) Trenton Tigers 34 36 29 22 - 121 (Antoine Walker 31)
Trenton have been quiet this year, but Antoine Walker and his infamous shimmy take them past the OCs and just enough to get the W despite a furious fourth quarter fight by the visitors. The OCs have been much tougher this year to date, mostly due to the stellar point guard play of Jason Kidd. Kidd was always one of my favourite guys (on court rather than off of course) - I loved the way he turned NJ into a contender almost overnight and the way he played point guard was the way I felt it should be played - a tough defender and a push-push-push mentality on offense. Of course he was sometimes known as Ason Kidd because he had no jumper early in his career and then later Ason Ki when the defense went too - but until recently he was third all-time on three pointers made - not bad for someone without a J.
( 3- 8) Chicago Gears 42 22 26 28 - 118 (LeBron James 33)
( 3- 7) Brooklyn Indian 25 23 19 30 - 97 (Dominique Wilkins 23)
Lebron wins! Lebron has had a very quiet start this year in the UBAS (and to some extent in the NBA too). The Gears have relied on him but it hasn't been working. Wilkins and Lebron would be worth the price of admission for a game. So who's this seasons MVP? The early favourite may be Steph Curry who has been smoking hot. My prediction is that it may end up being Durant if he comes all the way back and the Thunder end up in the top 5 in the NBA. The other guy I think may have it in him is Davis - but the Pelicans need to get up into the playoffs for that to happen and I'm not sure they have it. Oh, yeah Lebron will be up there in the conversation and if Harden carries on the way he's playing (even playing D!!) then it will be close. This game wasn't though as the Indians got jumped on fast and never found their mojo.
( 4- 6) Fort Wayne Pist 23 26 20 27 - 96 (Isiah Thomas 24)
( 6- 5) Charlotte Bobca 38 26 26 28 - 118 (Oscar Schmidt 27)
Pistons just completed a big trade with my Knicks for Shareef Abdul Rahim. I don't know what was wrong with Shareef this year - still looked great according to pre-season stats but he just wasn't delivering and I benched him and the rest is history. For Pistons he would seem a great fit alongside Jabbar and I felt this was a great trade for both of us. Very disappointed to see his first game was another poor 8 and 6 type performance shooting 20% from the field... sorry Robert but I honestly believe he will play better and with the laws of averages he should be better still for you in the long run!! Bobcats get a quality win on this one though, they have the twin powers of Oscar and although Schmidt gets the points it's Robertson who does the damage night in and night out - 22 - 10 - 8 is getting it done. Bobcats are going to be wanting a playoff spot this year too - gonna be very competitive and some good teams won't make it...
( 5- 6) Chicago Crusade 21 25 21 26 - 93 (Kevin Johnson 17)
(10- 1) Flint Tropics 23 24 39 29 - 115 (Karl Malone 19)
Flint will make the playoffs!! League best 10-1 for the Semi-Pro team is rocking the league (still believing they can make it to the NBA if the leagues merge??). If you want to know why they're doing so well I'd sum it up in a word; balance. I love the fact they've got Karl Malone (who is a true UBA superstar) but they add in a lot of quality guys and use them all. Crusaders have been disappointing so far for a team I thought would be competing for ABA crown - early days still and we'll know how we stand after a couple more weeks... Flint look like a lock for the playoffs but I don't seem them carrying on at this pace of wins all year :)
( 8- 3) Seattle Superso 30 20 36 35 - 121 (Larry Bird 23)
( 6- 5) Oshkosh All Sta 27 30 28 30 - 115 (Fred Brown 35)
Seattle I do see carrying on at this pace all year and are one of the favourites behind the Lakers to take out the title. Bird, Garnett, Harden and the often unnoticed Nate Thurmond make for a scary squad. Give the point to Rondo and there's plenty of ball for everyone to score. The All-Stars made an impressive start to the season but that seems to be dropping off a bit now and they're another team I see in the dog-fight NBA. Got to like downtown Fred Brown going off for 35 though. Good game in Oshkosh and a great win for Seattle.
( 4- 7) Milwaukee Bucks 20 21 32 29 - 102 (Cedric Ceballos 18)
( 8- 3) Baltimore Bulle 38 26 39 19 - 122 (John Stockton 23)
If Flint were a surprise so far I have to rate the Bullets right up there. This Stockton led outfit has already had some quality wins (like today over the evolving before our eyes Milwaukee Bucks) and is looking like a real contender. I love their gaurd combo of Stockton, Havlicek and Westphal - 30 combined assists to go with 48 points is tasty - especially when Havlicek only had 6 and 5. Hold on, I want to say something about the Bucks but can't remember who's currently on their squad... That's right they added Dirk - hold on, Russell only played 12 minutes and had no shot attempts?? Straight into blowout mode from first quarter attack kept the winningest guy to play in the NBA on the pine the rest of the way. More trades coming Eddie? Seriously though I love the way Eddie rolls the dice and ends up with scary teams - 4-7 now, but watch out everyone...
Merry Christmas to you all :)
