So Adam's released his future projections for the next six years - where do you rank and does its publication affect your play today? The short answer today was that the announcements last night sent ripples through the league that had coaches up in arms and teams shaking their heads in disbelief... get this, it also had a massive impact on each and every game today...
Injuries
Dennis Johnson 1
Anfernee Hardaway 17 - ouch
Max Zaslofsky 1
Arnie Risen 2
(14- 9) Seattle Superso 22 30 21 21 - 94 (Kevin Garnett 19)
(15- 8) Akron Firestone 22 23 25 31 - 101 (Spencer Haywood 25)
Seattle may have the superior outlook but both teams heading into this one had identical 14-8 records and make no mistake either of these two could be sitting at the top at the end of the season. Today Akron was showing that Wilt's supporting cast is good enough and they rally around the big fella to deliver the W with a fourth quarter crunch-time performance. Here's a question for you; how many of our esteemed UBA GMs play with the crunch time settings? Can they make the difference between those close wins and losses? Yes says Greg and the Stones take this one but Seattle are truly a dangerous team and the return game will be fun. Group 2 snorts Greg - watch out Seattle!
(10-13) Harlem Globetro 20 44 31 22 - 117 (Michael Finley 20)
(14- 9) St Louis Spirit 30 36 20 37 - 123 (Allen Iverson 31)
Harlem players were noticeably affected by finding out that they're in the lowest grouping on the commish's projections and started the game sluggishly before finding rhythm in the middle two quarters. Unfortunately for them the Spirits and their outspoken leader had the answer and came surging back in the fourth to take the W. The Spirits sit at an ubelievable 14-9 (compared to previous years of sub .500) but the loss of Penny today for a whole bunch of games won't be well received. Spirits are in group 4 - better long term outlook than the Globies?
(12-11) New Orleans Hor 32 33 39 29 - 133 (Chris Bosh 30)
( 1-23) Kansas City Ste 28 25 42 31 - 126 (Zach Randolph 26)
Hornets took the news that they will be a powerhouse and a top tier team for ages with a buzz that carried them all the way to the finish over the one win Steers. Steers have not found a way to win (well.. except once obviously) yet this year so a moral victory of a close game against a team like the Hornets probably is about enough for them this year. Add to that Chris Bosh is from another planet and today the top guy on any floor anywhere (planet or otherwise).
(12-12) Oshkosh All Sta 23 26 29 28 - 106 (Fred Brown 25)
(12-11) Washington Gene 31 31 20 27 - 109 (Kevin Durant 29)
Washington were another team given a powerful tier 1 projection by the commish and came out of the gates fast and happy. Oshkosh were given mid-level status but they're a battling team and closed the gap slowly in the second half. Just enough Durantula to get the deal done today. I can't help thinking that Washington in the future will be as good as Durant gets. The good news for them is that Moses is like fine wine and will age nicely alongside Durant.
(13-11) Philadelphia Sp 23 34 26 26 - 109 (Terrell Brandon 18)
(12-11) Denver Rockets 38 30 26 26 - 120 (Michael Jordan 26)
Another team slow out the gate today after being given bottom tier status was the Philly Sphas. Denver faired better as a mid-level team and although the team seemed generally happy MJ was distinctly not and set out to prove why any team with him on would be a winner down the track.
(10-13) Buffalo Braves 27 30 30 34 - 121 (Clyde Drexler 21)
(13-11) Scranton Miners 31 38 39 24 - 132 (Blake Griffin 27)
Braves and Miners are middling teams according to the future power rankings. Neither will like that much, but in this case both teams are built for the next couple of seasons - then it will be interesting! Home team prevails today thanks to 27 from Griffin whose game development will be a pleasing site for Steve. Dustin is likely to react to the news with more trades - there's been a whole batch load this year so far :)
(18- 6) New York Knicks 33 35 25 30 - 123 (George Mikan 27)
(12-11) New York Rens 19 33 24 34 - 110 (George Gervin 34)
Battle of New York take 2. Made even more interesting by the announcement that both teams are considered tier 1 for the future this was always going to be an interesting matchup. I like to make trades as much as the next guy but I tend to think one trade at a time, Stan is different in that he makes a move with a bigger plan - we all witnessed this back with his trades with Buffalo and Denver where he basically made a three-way trade at arms length. With that in mind I agree with the commish that this is a serious team that will challenge - I think that the rating is given a boost by being in the weaker ABA conference too (yes even in the future it will be easier to get to the Finals through the ABA than the NBA unless someone in the NBA starts making bad trades to the ABA). Knicks were pleased to be in the top tier group (just sneaked in) but actually intend to win every title in the next six years. Yes I know that's not realistic and if we can get one it will be great, but I want to win around 70% of games every year and always be in the chase - if not there will be big changes :) Today new boy Gervin impressed for the Rens with 34 points, but the all-round team game of the Knicks was superior and after an explosive first quarter it was a walk in the (central) park in NY. Round 2 to the Knicks - round 3 will be game one of the Finals (yes, if I have it my way).
(12-11) Trenton Tigers 28 26 20 24 - 98 (Kresimir Cosic 21)
(13-11) Minnesota Piper 26 45 32 26 - 129 (Jack Twyman 25)
Two above .500 teams clash in Minny but the hosts don't let the visiting Tigers in as they thump them by 30 points thanks to a devastating second quarter outburst. Again the future ratings have an effect on today's games and the Tigers were literally flat as they were given a bottom tier rating for the future. Pipers are second tier and they will continue to challenge the best teams in the ABA moving forward.
(17- 7) Hawaii Chiefs 34 36 25 17 - 112 (Bob Pettit 22)
( 3-20) Dayton Metropol 30 20 34 25 - 109 (Kobe Bryant 24)
Whilst Hawaii have been given the nod for the title this year (over the Knicks in 7 I believe), they've been given little future respect by the commish and Coach Jeff has already been heard from neighbouring states kicking over trash cans and issuing profanity that can't be repeated. Whatever their outlook it's fair to say the the Chiefs are really built for now... and Dayton is clearly waiting on brighter days. Still with all that, Kobe and crew push the Chiefs to the wire today and save for some late game heroics by Bobby McD this game could have been a huge upset. Brighter days ahead for Dayton if the young pups continue to develop right.
