The end is in sight isn't it? Man, this is probably the worst part of the season for lots of teams; heartbreaking games you can't afford to lose, games that mean nothing at all and of course the time of year when you pray for your competitors to go down in flames so that you can sneak up past them in the rankings and avoid THAT TEAM in the playoffs. For me the worst part of this time of the year is the injuries, you're primed and ready for the playoffs and your star point guard turns his ankle or your power forward sprains his attitude and you literally and metaphorically limp in to the playoffs.
Injuries
Nat Holman 6 - kind of irrelevant injury here... but the two below... mmm...
Jason Richardson 4
Tracy McGrady 1
(50-30) Cincinnati Roya 19 32 26 32 - 109 (George Yardley 21)
(42-38) Oshkosh All Sta 27 17 19 31 - 94 (Paul Arizin 25)
Laud it upon the Royals as they top the magical number 50 in a bounce back year. Yardley has been solid for them this year but their star is a 6'9'' point guard answering to the name of "Magic". Magic is my all-time favourite player edging out Jordan and West and my favourite point guard of all-time edging out Stockton and Oscar Robertson. One thing I want to say on this whole GOAT arguement is that whilst it's fun to look at stats and even normalise the entire history of basketball (tips hat to Adam Russell); it's all rather subjective. The best one can ever really be is to be considered the greatest of the current era because anything else is simply not possible given our current knowledge of the laws of physics. Would Wilt have dominated Shaq? He thought so, 9 out of 10 analysts may have thought so but we'll never truly know as the eras can't be rightly compared. In fact given that basketball isn't a one-on-one sport (note to the current NBA), you can only really hope to be the best at a given position at a given time - and even that is subjective to a certain extent too. Anyway, Magic was the best point guard because he was my favourite and that works for me at least. Today he wasn't the best he could be but he still found a way to fill every statistical category along the way.
(52-30) New Orleans Hor 27 16 28 32 - 103 (George Gervin 20)
(49-32) New York Rens 36 26 32 33 - 127 (Charles Barkley 45)
The Rens find some late-season form and thump the Hornets good and proper behind mouthy, opinionated and one of the most fun guys to watch on a court Chuck Barkley. He reminds me of Jesse Venturer with the commentary at times it's so silly, but hey, it's entertaining. 45 points for one of the best under-sized players to ever play (and our number one player of the day today to boot). How Chuck got away with being a PF at his size was all down to the way he used his body so effectively. Gervin was a great player but Barkley set the pace all game long - will the Rens come out of the ABA? Don't know but I hope so as the games get uploaded quicker when Stan's team wins ;)
(43-39) LA Stars 30 26 31 24 - 111 (Hal Greer 30)
(57-23) LA Lakers 33 23 32 29 - 117 (Andris Biedrins 18)
Battle of LA (thankfully no Clippers or Sterling references to fall back on) was a little close for comfort for the heavily favoured Lakers. In a team of stars (particularly on the front line) how come Andris Biedrins is the leading scorer? Greer has played a great season for the Stars and is a gel guy that will serve them well for the future - plenty of fouls in this one. Lakers have to win one more to match Sonics on 58 and the last two will push them past.
(25-55) Dayton Metropol 22 20 40 27 - 109 (Russell Westbrook 23)
(32-49) Chicago Gears 29 30 26 35 - 120 (Tony Parker 23)
Chicago and Dayton are both capable teams but in this league that simply won't get it done. Too different PGs that are currently fighting in the NBA playoffs go at it with Westbrook and Parker duelling on 23.
(55-27) Akron Firestone 39 19 21 34 - 113 (Jerry West 35)
(48-33) Harlem Globetro 33 26 32 24 - 115 (Lou Hudson 28)
Now this was a playoff-ready game! Akron ride in with their 7 game win-streak and desperately looking to add home court to their top 4 seeding but Harlem has been playing great ball themselves recently riding a 6 (now 7) game win-streak of their own. Jerry West is an all-world shooting guard (yeah he plays a little point, but he's a shooting guard for sure) and is 35 was massive but Lou Hudson had his stroke going too and whilst he doesn't have the complete drive of West and couldn't quite match his points total, he does get the W - even though he missed the potential game winner. Fortunately the 'forgotten' superstar Dwight Howard was there to tip in the miss and stun the Firestones. Big win for Globies Nation.
(11-69) Kansas City Ste 22 27 33 16 - 98 (Chet Walker 19)
(22-58) Wilkes-Barre Ba 33 24 36 23 - 116 (Demarcus Cousins 22)
Was 11 wins the final prediction for KC? Commish knows his stuff but two more attempts for the Steers to gain some respect. Barons win.
(33-49) Philadelphia Sp 19 31 37 25 - 112 (David Thompson 21)
(45-37) Golden State Wa 27 38 29 30 - 124 (Larry Nance 22)
Golden State are a playoff ready team for sure and would give any team in the ABA a hard 7-game series. Unfortunately for them, they're not in the ABA so it's extra vacation instead.
(51-30) Minnesota Piper 44 34 23 30 - 131 (Tracy McGrady 29)
(19-62) Atlanta Hawks 31 24 28 31 - 114 (Peja Stojakovic 22)
TMac leads the charge for the Pipers in their penultimate game of the season and gets himself injured for one in the process - fortunately it's just the following non-playoff game and the Pipers are already sitting pretty on 51 wins. Hawks have been playing pretty poor all year and will probably end up on just 19 wins.
