Yes we’re cracking our way through Season 4 and it’s already becoming clear who the power players are looking like at this stage - a couple of minor surprises on both sides of the coin too. The problem if you’re in the NBA conference is that a slow start might be enough to keep you out the playoffs - even at this stage there’s a few teams that need to start winning soon!

(13- 6) Hawaii Chiefs 39 37 31 22 - 129 (Cliff Hagan 27)
( 5-13) Brooklyn Indian 25 17 31 27 - 100 (Kevin Martin 22)
Hawaii is not a surprising team to sit atop the ABA but they’ve been far more active in trades than their first three seasons and that’s why they are up there. A good win over the disappointing Indians today and Cliff Hagan (a great acquisition by Jeff) leads the way.
( 7-12) Buffalo Braves 21 26 35 27 - 109 (John Drew 26)
(13- 6) Golden State Wa 36 40 20 26 - 122 (Bob Dandridge 18)
Buffalo and the Warriors are a great example of what I was talking about above - the Braves are at risk of missing the playoffs if they don’t get it in gear real soon and the Warriors are playing really well and exceeding expectations at this point. Today was no different and the home town Warriors were up huge at the half by 29 points. Golden State does most of its damage by defending well and putting pressure on the other team’s weaknesses and exposes the Braves lack of depth in the front court today, hence the recent trade dangling of young stud Steph Curry as Dustin is searching for a legitimate big.
( 4-15) St Louis Spirit 29 31 25 43 - 128 (Allen Iverson 20)
(13- 6) New York Rens 31 33 42 30 - 136 (Steve Francis 22)
The Rens are doing fine now after that wobbly start and racking up the wins to keep level with Hawaii. Today was a bit close for comfort after a mega third quarter they let their guard down a little far and AI nearly had the answer for them going off for 16 fourth quarter points and wreaking havoc on the Rens defense. Fortunately there was enough court for Barkley, Groza and Hill to keep the home team safe.
( 6-13) Harlem Globetro 24 14 20 28 - 86 (Michael Finley 25)
(13- 5) New York Knicks 27 28 31 24 - 110 (Wilt Chamberlain 22)
Knicks are trucking along nicely behind the red-hot Bucks and steady Cincy in the division. Unsurprisingly we rely rather heavily on the services of Wilt but he does have broad shoulders. Gus Williams is a nice addition to solidify the guards and provide some defense that may cause some issues for opposing guards we hope! 18 points today for Gus and three steals. Today wasn’t a close affair with the Knicks up by 20 at the half and thirty by 3 as they struggled to score beyond Michael Finley. I remember a couple of years ago the Kiks agreeing that Dwight Howard was the one person they’d build a team around in today’s game - I get the feeling that may not be the case anymore despite his statistical achievements. Perhaps the bigger question right now is KD or LBJ?
( 5-14) Washington Gene 30 19 22 29 - 100 (Dominique Wilkins 24)
(14- 5) Chicago Crusade 31 29 24 39 - 123 (Andrew Toney 20)
The best team in the ABA is the Crusaders though and the tough scheduled for the Wizards continues as they get well beaten again. To add injury to insult, they lose Wilkins for the next game too! For me the Crusaders success seems to rely heavily on Bill Walton and the much improved defensive edge he’s brought across - he may not score that heavily but he makes it hard for other bigs to get going. The Wix can still turn it around in the ABA but 5 wins to this point mean it better come soon Ty….
( 5-13) Dayton Metropol 24 22 23 26 - 95 (Al Green 16)
(10- 9) Baltimore Bulle 34 26 37 36 - 133 (Paul Westphal 23)
The Boston Bullets (sorry, Baltimore) give the Dayton Metrosexuals a damn good thumping at home. Gar Heard does the majority of the damage and raises the Baltimore outfit above .500 again. Are they a contender for a playoff birth in the very difficult NBA? Maybe, they’ve certainly got a good looking future with some guys who mature later in their respective careers like John Stockton who double doubles today.
( 7-12) Chicago Gears 27 26 32 30 - 115 (LeBron James 23)
( 8-11) Memphis Sounds 34 28 33 37 - 132 (Chris Mullin 25)
Someone had to get win number 8 today and it was the home town Sounds who ran out winners over the Chicago Lebrons. Lebron is the best player in the day today with the possible exception of Kevin Durant but dominant as he is you need to be deeper than the Gears are right now to challenge for the crown in the UBAS King James...
( 7-12) Original Celtic 30 33 32 30 - 125 (Clifford Robinson 19)
(10- 9) Denver Rockets 38 41 27 24 - 130 (Brandon Roy 27)
Rocks get back the right side of .500 thanks largely to Roy, although this will be his final year in the league as injuries will prevent him ever rising again I’m sure. Do you ever wonder if Derrick Rose will play at the same level again? Kobe I don’t worry about, he’ll be back dropping high 20’s a game by the end of the season (not that it will be enough to save the Lakers this year). Close game was settled by Roy who scored the last 7 points to claim the game for the home town Denver outfit.
( 8-11) Charlotte Bobca 27 25 38 39 - 129 (Oscar Schmidt 35)
(10-10) Texas Chaparral 26 30 20 39 - 115 (Dirk Nowitzki 26)
Has the bubble burst in Texas? An unbelievable start to the year and an impressive record seems to have evaporated and the Chaps are at .500 and falling losing again at home. Dirk is here for life I think, but the rest of you are transient (oh yeah, except that Rose guy). Oscar Robertson and Oscar Schmidt were smoking today with 35 points for Schmidt and a superb triple double by big 0 featuring 32 points on just 16 shots. Just reminds you that almost any team is a danger when their star player really plays like one. Texas have a lot of future guys on their lineup so this is but a minor setback for them...
