Apparently all our American friends today had a well-deserved break to celebrate Martin Luther King day! Why not, I say, at least if you’re going to have a day off for someone it should be someone worthy and anyone who could get across the message that you can’t fight what’s wrong by being wrong yourself is worthy in my books. All I need now is James Worthy to be POD and I’ll feel like I’ve tied the story in well to the games for the day!
It certainly proved to be a battling day that pitches some decent rivalries and similar records together...
Injuries
Elton Brand 4 - more losses coming in Harlem?
(10-12) New Orleans Hor 30 31 37 23 - 121 (George Gervin 29)
(10-12) Charlotte Bobca 26 35 27 27 - 115 (Oscar Robertson 20)
The Oscars have clicked in Charlotte but the celebration was put on Ice as George Gervin rolled the ball off his fingertips again and again to punish the lack of defense by the Bobcats and steal the game on the road. Late rally by Schmidt fell short to the disappointment of the home fans.
(17- 5) LA Lakers 21 23 33 23 - 100 (Chris Webber 28)
(12-10) Akron Firestone 20 27 33 30 - 110 (George Mikan 30)
In what on paper before the season started looked like a battle between the top two teams in the NBA if not the league has seen differing fortunes for the reigning champs and perennial bridesmaid from the NBA conference. Today though, the Firestones awoke and the inside outside duo of (ironically enough) Laker legends Mikan and West score 48 points to edge out the Lakers with a strong 4th quarter performance. Webber leads the LA outfit but does he really fit in Hollywood? Rumours are abundant the Chris may not be here to stay but the Lakers at 17-5 (good for 2nd in the NBA) aren’t hitting the eject button yet on the talented guy. Funny story about Webber, we had a TV show in the UK on NBA weekly and one game the Queens were playing a game and Webber lost the game but choking at the end, I emailed into the show and they read out my scathing comments about Webber live on air - always been kind of proud of that!
(17- 5) Scranton Miners 25 28 30 26 - 109 (Julius Erving 28)
( 8-15) Fort Wayne Pist 23 27 23 25 - 98 (Kiki Vandeweghe 24)
Yesterday’s MVP was MJ and that was just the fuel Dr J needed to try and top the guy who stole his show so Dr J goes off for 28 and player of the day today - back to you Mike, what you got? Seriously good win for the Miners who are looking like the early season favourites out of the ABA holding off the Chiefs of Hawaii (watch out guys that other NY team is coming up fast). Kiki can score the ball all right and does so the tone of 24 today in the losing effort for the Pistons who have been pretty disappointing so far this year.
(16- 6) Anderson Packer 33 24 21 29 - 107 (Rick Barry 21)
(15- 7) Cincinnati Roya 24 31 25 32 - 112 (Hank Luisetti 21)
The Packers and Royals go at it in a tough and close matchup between two of the better teams in the league. Magic does what Magic does best (pass, in case you didn’t know it) and Hank lights it up to match Rick Barry’s 21 for the Pack. Has Rick Barry been displaced by Paul Pierce, I don’t think so, Barry is a quality player and when he starts playing full seasons the Packers will be even tougher. Today’s game was down to Connie Hawkins though and his all-round play. Royals and Packers will both be tough playoff teams in the oh-so-strong NBA.
( 5-17) Wilkes-Barre Ba 32 23 25 22 - 102 (Karl Malone 28)
(13-10) Trenton Tigers 35 22 28 34 - 119 (Neil Johnston 25)
Trenton stays on playoff pace with an easy matchup against the still not ready Barons, although notice Malone seems to be on the up and up (and the up is a long way above a lot of UBA players). Johnston is an underrated centre in the league and leads the Tigers today with his 25 points and 13 boards (although you could just as easy credit Baylor for his 25 and 11 with great defense).
(19- 3) Milwaukee Bucks 34 35 24 36 - 129 (Sleepy Floyd 22)
(16- 7) New York Rens 28 41 43 32 - 144 (Gilbert Arenas 29)
The Bucks don’t get it done for just the third time this year… although an away matchup against that aforementioned other team from New York was always going to be tough. How do you put up 144 points against the frontline of the Bucks? 1. Foul out Bill Russell 2. Score a bitch load of shots from outside - led by Gilbert Arenas and his shot making ability the Rens literally ran the Bucks off the court in the third quarter and the larger stronger outfit never recovered. Great win for the Rens who (bold prediction time) will win the ABA this year...
( 9-14) Buffalo Braves 30 30 25 33 - 118 (Vince Carter 27)
( 7-15) Philadelphia Sp 20 25 31 26 - 102 (Mel Riebe 23)
C’mon Braves unleash the beast inside before it’s too late. Carter is a UBA stud and a great two-way guard and is having a great year despite the Braves early struggles. Today they’ll take the away win against the struggling outfit from Philly.
(17- 6) Hawaii Chiefs 24 27 43 25 - 119 (Max Zaslofsky 24)
(17- 6) Chicago Crusade 33 20 29 32 - 114 (Willie Wise 24)
Sorry I forgot to mention the Crusaders in the ABA who sat at 17-5 before coughing up the game to conference rivals the Chiefs. Two guys who were both on the Knicks roster during training camp matched each other step for step as MaxZ and Willie Wise both tallied 24. 3rd quarter let down the home side and the exciting finish was never close enough to get a shot to win and the time ran out with the Chiefs holding on. Fulks and Pettit double double and do most of the damage although Coach Kik Snr will be upset that a coaching error expanded the roster to 8 with Laettner playing less than a minute and appearing on no statistical category other than getting in the game! Personally I think it’s a bit early in the season to shorten your roster to 7 but hey if you can get away with it...
( 8-15) Harlem Globetro 24 34 34 24 - 116 (Lou Hudson 27)
(12-10) Oshkosh All Sta 30 34 20 43 - 127 (Paul Arizin 29)
Finally Oshkosh gets a decent home win to move 2 games above water level with Pitchin’ Paul tallying an efficient 29 good enough for second on today’s player rankings. News goes from bad to worse for Harlem who lose Elton Glass for 4 games with a sprained attitude. Yikes, long season for the Globies.
