I don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to 2014. The UBAS is getting stronger and the UBAL continues to defy age for starters, it’s sunny and warm in Auckland and I’m enjoying the new pool (although the kids are enjoying it more) - sorry Summer in Southern Hemisphere dudes - and at least the Lakers haven’t traded Pau Gasol (yet).
On to today’s games people - first you’ll notice some injuries; a few of the standard 1 gamers to get them out the way (KD being the biggie) but Johnny Wooden goes down for an extended period and young Eric Gordon follows him for most of that. Today is a high-scoring day in the UBAS; only one team out of all doesn’t make triple figures in points - and that one team already has 10 wins!
Let’s do it!
Injuries
Kevin Durant 1
Purvis Short 1
Chris Gatling 1
Johnny Wooden 17
John Drew 1
Eric Gordon 10
( 9- 6) Texas Chaparral 27 21 33 22 - 103 (Derrick Rose 24)
( 5- 9) Brooklyn Indian 33 20 33 27 - 113 (Kevin Durant 25)
Texas have had a great start to the 4th season exceeding the hopes of Tony Hyde early on. Today they roll into Brooklyn looking to take down KD and his upstarts, but come up short in the end after never quite managing to overcome a lack-lustre start. KD and Josh Howard do most of the damage and Derrick Rose battles in vain. Poor Derrick Rose, and last I heard British star Loul Deng has just left the windy city too… Are the Bulls in tank mode now Tony?
(12- 2) Anderson Packer 38 30 23 28 - 119 (Paul Pierce 24)
( 6- 9) Fort Wayne Pist 31 14 31 24 - 100 (Stephon Marbury 23)
The Packers are playing great ball to start this year off and enjoying the freedom of not having the pressures of having the most dominant player in the game on their team. Pierce is today’s top man (he’s still a dick by the way) and plays well along side Zeke and Gilmore just does what he does every game - the most steady of performers. I’m surprised that the Pistons have found no rhythm yet this season - they look good on paper but don’t have quite the right mix but Robert is out there always looking to turn it around so if you’re trade hungry...
( 4-11) St Louis Spirit 28 26 22 23 - 99 (Ray Allen 16)
(10- 4) New York Knicks 37 41 24 32 - 134 (Rudy Tomjanovich 30)
The Spirits ride into New York and get a frosty reception as they get pounded by super-efficient scoring machine Rudy T (again in Hot Shots) and the Knicks. Okay, my preamble was a little off as 99 doesn’t count as a 100 so make that two teams who fail to hit the triple. Anyways Knicks shoot nearly 60% and Wilt only plays 16 minutes in the blowout.
(10- 5) Hawaii Chiefs 22 23 30 23 - 98 (Bobby McDermott 19)
( 9- 6) Trenton Tigers 18 42 36 21 - 117 (Pete Maravich 22)
Hawaii and Trenton love to go at each other and Coach O’Donnell will love the outcome as division leaders Hawaii can’t stay with Trenton today. Maracich orchestrates and Elgin Baylor and the bigs of Trenton own the glass (+13). Bob Pettit was great in defeat (18/18) but otherwise the Chiefs just weren’t themselves… easy win for the Tigers as they catch up ground...
( 4-10) Dayton Metropol 29 24 16 39 - 108 (Russell Westbrook 24)
( 8- 7) Denver Rockets 36 25 22 23 - 106 (Michael Jordan 27)
The Nuggests have had some early struggles, found some form and now just lose out at home against Dayton in a thriller. Jordan played his game but the supporting cast folded in the fourth quarter and let a 14 point lead evaporate. Kobe and Westbrook went nuts in the fourth combining for 32 points in the final quarter. Kobe had only 2 points until the fourth acting as mainly a facilitator (8 assists) but he and Westbrook were relentless going to the hoop late and with the game tied up Westbrook drove and scored at the basket with less just 8 tenths of a second on the clock. The Rockets couldn’t get the ball to Jordan so opted for gunner Antoine Walker who missed his 9th consecutive shot to doom the home team (fortunately he made his first and finished by shooting just 10% from the field). Hard loss for Denver.
( 6- 9) Chicago Gears 24 24 25 37 - 110 (Sidney Wicks 22)
(11- 4) Chicago Crusade 33 34 25 35 - 127 (Kevin Johnson 17)
The battle of Chicago was actually a fairly one-sided affair as the Crusaders lead by 19 at the half and the Gears just couldn’t touch them. 11 th win for the Crusaders and the ABA powerhouses better take notice. Such a balanced attack with a tonne of players around the late teens but Sabonis is doing the majority of the damage. Lebron played one of his worst games in a UBA team today and that’s all she wrote for the Gears.
( 5-10) Buffalo Braves 34 22 32 30 9 - 127 (Vince Carter 34)
( 9- 6) Golden State Wa 27 26 26 39 10 - 128 (George McGinnis 22)
The Braves have been disappointing early on although their star man Vince Carter has not (number 3 performance today) so a solid away win over the Warriors would have been great. Unfortunately a late surge by the Warriors tied the game on a long deuce by McGinnis at the buzzer and sent the crowd wild and the game into overtime. The foul-fest (82 free-throws combined) and players fouling out all over the place came down to which team could put the best 5 in left at the end. With Carter fouling out at the end of regulation the Braves needed someone else to step up - and as a team they did just that - Chris Paul was off and totally outplayed by Paul Pressey who notched a fine double double but also had 6 boards and 6 huge steals. None bigger than in the last minute when he picked the pocket of Steph Curry (a quiet game for Steph too) and pulled up and drained the mid-range with 2 ticks left on the clock. Buffalo fumbled the inbound play and could only find Andrew Bynum who missed the mid-range jumper by 3 feet as time expired. Bynum said afterwards that he didn’t care and had lost his love for the game - Coach O’Connell said he didn’t think Bynum meant it but was disappointed in his big man’s efforts late after not being able to secure rebounds that would have clinched the game. Can Buffalo bounce back and are the Warriors a team to watch out for in the NBA Conference (they sure would be in the ABA ;)
( 5-10) Washington Gene 34 31 36 31 - 132 (Glenn Robinson 22)
(10- 5) New York Rens 38 39 37 36 - 150 (Gilbert Arenas 26)
Rens have an awesome roster and are starting to gain momentum after a poor start. The Generals will get it going but the trade rumours swirling around the entire squad seem to be having a negative affect on their play. Today the Rens put up a whopping 150 points in the blow-out win and Arenas was loving every minute. Big Dog got some minutes today and was top-scorer for the Generals… knowing these two cats, trades a coming!
( 4-11) Charlotte Bobca 33 24 39 38 - 134 (Oscar Robertson 23)
( 5-10) Kansas City Ste 29 30 47 41 - 147 (Dan Issel 24)
Speaking of big scores the 4 win Bobcats and Steers go at each other in an all-star like affair (devoid of any defence). Great win number 5 for the home town Steers and that low-end target of wins looks like it may indeed be surpassed if they can keep picking off these types of games. Matching 23 point games for the Oscars (although Schmidt gunned a fair few more shots) and of course Oscar flirted with his triple-double (just a rebound short) but it was Dan Issel who lead Kansas and 4 players in the 20s to the win. Nice line by Buddy Jeanette and his double-double where assists were flying all over the show.
