Just wondering where day 72 was and thinking maybe it was another mystery day (like 69) when it occurred to me that I'd already been sent that one and was supposed to be writing it up myself! Doh!
I can be forgiven on two counts... firstly this morning was manic - my daughter's 11th birthday (yes Sep 11th is an easy one to remember - don't forget we're a day ahead here) and I'm dog-sitting an extra dog today - damn thing was going nuts too and even managed to pee on the curtains!! And secondly I'm not sure I've got right now... but I think it will come to me... oh yes, memory not what it was!
Injuries
Jose Calderon 6
Jimmy Walker 1
Lenny Wilkens 3
Flynn Robinson 5
Jeff Ruland 26 - Ouch to 26 games out of action
(22-15) Dallas Chaparra 37 34 34 32 - 137 (Bob Pettit 27)
(20-18) Oakland Oaks 31 37 28 30 - 126 (Max Zaslofsky 21)
How are the Oaks going to be this year? Unpredictable would be my assessment. Capable of taking down a powerhouse on the road and then succumbing on their home floor to lesser foes. No knock on the Chaps of Dallas who are a very good ABA outfit and when Bob Pettit rolls back the years they're tough to beat. Anyone other than Tony Morris and I'd think Dwight Howard was leaving Oakland, but Tony is a long-term player and Dwight has fallen out of favour whilst he rides the tailcoat of Kevin McHale and Paul Silas. Old School Max Z leads the scoring for Oaks but bleeding in 137 at home won't get it done and the Chaps steal on on the road happily.
(15-21) Pittsburgh Cond 30 32 31 29 - 122 (Monta Ellis 21)
(16-22) New Jersey Amer 34 25 32 29 - 120 (Rajon Rondo 22)
Tight game throughout in Jersey and the home team lose a heart breaker as Clifford Ray floats in a mid-range effort with barely a tick on the clock to break the deadlock and seal the game for the Condors (are all the wins going to the away team today??). Paul Pierce and Monta Ellis do the majority of the damage and it's 15 and 11 from PP and 21 and 9 dimes from Ellis. Rajon Rondo continues to dish at a high rate with 13 dazzlers today to accompany his 22 points in the losing effort.
(20-17) Harlem Rens 22 25 20 18 - 85 (Kent Benson 14)
(32- 6) Houston Rockets 37 26 29 17 - 109 (David Robinson 26)
The Rockets were feeling a bit miffed at having actually lost 6 games so early in the season that they took it out on the visiting Rens by showing some early offense and then showing they can also run wit the best on the defensive end and shutting down Harlem to 38 second half points. Harlem will get one big back next game but have a few to wait for their hero - can they stay in the playoff race without the Dipper? How impressive have Houston been without Chris Paul? Very. Today Calderon was great with 11 assists but joins Paul on the bench again as he limps off with a ruptured spleen (IDK? could be). Never mind for Adam, Kenny Sears will play well I'm sure... The answer to the away winning question was answered quite emphatically I think...
(21-17) San Antonio Spu 17 36 24 39 - 116 (Toni Kukoc 24)
(12-24) Brooklyn Nets 31 32 26 32 - 121 (Shaquille O'Neal 37)
Boom Shaq daddy goes off for 37 for the Nets and it's just what they needed to stop the playoff hopeful Spurs in Brooklyn. Strong fourth quarter by Kukoc (15 in the fourth) was enough to make it uncomfortable but Shaq hit them 'when it matters' down the stretch and the Nets will take it.
(14-23) Miami Floridian 23 24 30 21 - 98 (Manu Ginobili 23)
(18-21) Toronto Raptors 35 21 22 26 - 104 (Kevin Durant 30)
Durant scores as he usually does and the Raps squeak out the home win over the visiting Floridians. 30 points on 16 shots is what Durant brings iwth his efficient game to go with his 9 boards and stellar play down the stretch. Of note, Greg Monroe notched a double double with 12 and 10 boards in a head to head with Emeka Okafor 14/13. Ginobli paced the Miami outfit wiht 23 of his own but 2 late turnovers and a bit of fatigue may have ended up costing Miami this one.
(22-15) Virginia Squire 15 37 35 30 - 117 (Stephen Curry 26)
(19-17) San Diego Qs 28 32 36 32 - 128 (Alex English 36)
I have mixed emotions with this one - I've been in a fairly tight battle several years with the Qs and usually hate to see them win... but Virginia is a close rival this year (usually we're a bit further back) so I'm kinda happy that the Qs get over one on them! They're both good teams with great coaches and star players so I'll try to focus and stay professional! Great thing about today's win for the Qs is that they prove they're not a one-man team and hold off a strong Squires outfit minus the services of Kobe Bean Bryant, the UBAL top scorer. English can literally go-off at any point though as his 36 today proves... 15 and 12 from defensive stopper Thurmond helps too... not to mention Larry Legend going just 3 of 18 for a mere 7 points...
(17-20) Baltimore Claws 27 23 15 31 - 96 (Allen Iverson 26)
(11-26) Indiana Pacers 31 31 21 34 - 117 (George Yardley 21)
Yardley is a great player in the UBA and I was sorry to see him go early this year before the season started. Fortunately for the Pacers he ended up with them and his 21 led them today to the win over the Claws team that is struggling for any wins at the moment. Unfortunately for Dan his lineup was hacked and sent in with Charles Barkley as PG and Allen Iverson as PF - they did pretty well considering! The Claws will need to shake it up just to get back into the playoff hunt this year as it's slipping away from them. The Pacers are built for the future not now...
(24-13) Syracuse Nation 30 27 28 33 - 118 (LeBron James 27)
(28-10) Orlando Magic 30 34 28 28 - 120 (Richie Guerin 22)
Lebron again puts in a strong performance on the road and is number 2 in hotshots today with his 27 points and 9 assists coming in an efficient manner (6 steals too), but the Magic are a tough outing for any team and they were not going to let the Nationals roll over them at home. Credit tough as nails guard Richie Guerin for this one, his late play on both of the floor kept the Magic a nose in front and Vlade Divac's tip in with a minute left gave the Magic a 2 point lead that they were able to maintain despite a furious final scramble where both teams exchanged open looks and fumbles. 18 and 12 for Divac, 22 and 13 for Garnett and a bit of everything from Grant Hill sums up the Magic strategy.
(28-10) New Orleans Jaz 29 40 29 21 - 119 (Tiago Splitter 20)
(13-24) Portland Trailb 26 30 19 17 - 92 (Sam Jones 18)
Let's finish where we started with an impressive away win. Today the super tough Jazz go on the road to Portland and spank the Blazers in front of their disillusioned crowd. It was over by half time and just seemed to get worse as Tiago Splitter was lighting them up in the third. 36% shooting and only 35 rebounds is a dismal performance by any home-team standards - 17 on rebounds really hurts when you shoot this bad.
