I asked a question in my blog on elearning 'what's in a name?' I wrote earlier tonight - you can read it if you must but go find the link, I'm not promoting it here for fear of ridicule!!
I did think a little around names though and thought we may carry that theme on in a mildly light-hearted manner as we look at today's games as the season starts to enter its final phases...
Injuries
Sweetwater Clifton 1 - how did someone know his water was sweet?
Sam Jones 5
Allen Iverson 1 - If AI had really had the answer would his initials have been just A or at least IQ?
Brandon Roy 1
(35-37) Scranton Miners 31 31 26 23 - 111 (Walter Davis 20)
(54-20) Cincinnati Roya 30 26 33 27 - 116 (Lou Hudson 20)
Ooh the Royals are cooking, smoking or any other euphemism you care to employ to describe the fact that they're the hottest team in the league right now. That said they may have overlooked Scranton today in Cincy and only just scraped out the win courtesy of Lou Hudson. I always wanted to give Hudson the nickname Hawk after the Hudson Hawk but Sweet Lou it was and I have to respect that. In all fairness he wasn't from anywhere around New York anyway... but he was a six time all-star for the Hawks and I think that proves my point? Walter Davis nearly propels the Miners with 20 of his own (Wally is an unfortunate name I guess).
(25-47) Boston Celtics 28 21 29 21 - 99 (Tom Heinsohn 20)
(42-30) LA Stars 38 35 26 28 - 127 (Shaquille O'Neal 29)
I don't know many people that go by the name of Shaquille, but certainly know only one that could carry off a monicker like that. The Stars pick up a crucial win (and they are all crucial in the ABA race right now) courtesy of the Big Diesel. Shaq is fun, much like Barkley, but he really could have been in the greatest of all time conversation with a better work ethic (just my opinion guys) rather than just one of the 50 greatest of all time. When he's engaged the Stars are a tough outing and the Celtics had no answer.
(37-36) San Diego Sails 31 30 21 32 - 114 (Al Jefferson 17)
(38-36) Buffalo Braves 33 23 26 31 - 113 (Vince Carter 40)
Man the Braves needed this one chasing down the 8th spot in the NBA, but damn it if the Sails didn't need it just a bit more with their sights still set on the playoffs themselves. Jack Twyman scores the last 6 points for the Sails as they hold on for the win as the Braves couldn't ride Vincent's 40 point outburst. Yes, Vincent. Vince sounds cool and basketball, Vincent sounds IT and not so cool (and his middle name is Lamar too). Number one player today though... Where was Hakeem? Yet the Sails get an impressive W on the road...
(44-28) Harlem Globetro 32 14 31 31 - 108 (Dwight Howard 29)
(35-37) Carolina Cougar 25 28 29 16 - 98 (Dino Radja 15)
Cougars used to be impressive felines and now all I can think of is middle-aged women on the hunt for young men. The Globies are back to being the hunters though in this one as Dwight (really, Dwight?) brings his A game to overturn Carolina as he dominates at both end in the fourth quarter; setting the tone with his defensive presence. Anyone else thing Dwight's personality has somehow transferred itself to the UBA programme? I don't think I can say too much about Dino and his name because he's from Europe so allowed funny European names but being the Radja sounds pretty cool.
(52-20) LA Lakers 20 25 32 22 - 99 (Isiah Thomas 18)
(19-53) Atlanta Hawks 27 16 25 26 - 94 (Hal Greer 18)
Lakers may be the most ironic of names in some respects, but it certainly seems to draw the largest emotional response from those classed as 'haters' to those classed as 'sheep'. I've been a Laker fan since Magic went pro and always will be - that may not be popular now but frankly it's my call. Laker fans are the dumbest anyway so I hear so you can write-off whatever I say as I'm clearly intellectually challenged anyway. I'll tell you this, if the Lakers in the NBA played like the Lakers in the UBAS they would be doing okay. Still, like Cincy before them they make hard work of the yet-to-reach 20 win Hawks. Isiah Thomas or Zeke leads scorers but the game was a grind out affair; fitting that the best player in the matchup was Charles Oakley. I always thought Oakley's name suited him perfectly (no, not the Charles bit).
(33-39) Sheboygan Redsk 21 23 35 30 - 109 (LeBron James 34)
(25-48) Boston Celtics 21 22 25 26 - 94 (Gar Heard 20)
First time I hear Gar Heard I thought they said Goat Heard. LeBron would like to be considered GOAT and for all his sins it's quite possible he may be. The thing that irks me about Lebron is that his game still seems so rough around the edges. He seems like a great college player playing against high-school teams, rather like Wilt back in the 60s. I've already admitted I'm a Laker fan, but MJ was the one guy who I think rates higher than all the others. I've heard a lot recently about Kobe being less than Mike (from Phil of course) and I don't think many people would argue that it's true (okay, some of those Laker fans I was defending earlier...) and now Lebron comes into the equation. My opinion, MJ was better than Kobe but Kobe is the closest thing we've seen since Mike. Lebron is a very different player to those too - he may rival Wilt one day but I don't think he'll touch Mike. Is there a better name on this planet for a basketball player than Michael Jordan? No.
(43-28) Seattle Superso 12 24 29 24 - 89 (Kobe Bryant 25)
(41-31) Washington Gene 28 21 30 19 - 98 (Dwyane Wade 20)
Kobe notches 25 but damn it if his team doesn't lose on the road in the capital. Kobe is a pretty cool name I admit, but Dwayne Wade I'm not so sure about. Good battle today between a couple of the top SGs in the league. Man I hate it when the forums talk basketball greats and invariably miss of Jerry West - this is the man that Kobe is closest to in almost every respect and one day I will get him on one of my teams! Ty is probably already messaging me to find out if his Generals got the W - yes Ty, nice home win against the dangerous Sonics. I hear Washington has a tough run in - looks like their ready (and not as tough as my Knicks with 6 games against Lakers and Bucks!!). Sonics are half a game ahead of the Knicks for 6th but have the easier run in.
(29-42) Golden State Wa 31 15 31 28 - 105 (Michael Redd 21)
(37-34) New Orleans Hor 15 23 18 25 - 81 (George Gervin 15)
Horents need to find some form and quickly as they are suddenly fading fast from the playoff picture. The loss today puts them LEVEL with the Kautskys who looked dead in the water a few weeks back. GG was never called horse but he would have been if he'd been in the Navy. Ice was cold but not in a good way as no-one from NO showed up for their game and the home crowd let them know their displeasure at the lack-luster effort. GSW are the ultimate spoiler team at this point of the season - fear them if you dare.
(37-34) Indianapolis Ka 29 29 27 28 - 113 (Larry Bird 22)
(20-51) St Louis Spirit 16 21 35 25 - 97 (Mark Aguirre 24)
Yes Indy yes. The Kautskys are the worst named team in the league and Larry Legend has come under fierce criticism for underperforming this year but watch out - the Kautskys are right back in the playoff picture with 10 games to go and now in a TIE for the 8th seed with the afore mentioned Hornets and a game and a half ahead of chasing Buffalo. The 8-9-10 seeding is going to be a fun run in on the NBA side of the league. My guess would be that the Braves get in, but I'm not counting out Indy - they look strong on paper and if they just start clicking... and don't foget the Packers, Knicks and Sonics are only 4-6 games ahead with 10 to go.... (damn I wish we didn't have to play the Bucks so much at this point of the season)...
That's all folks...
