Day 131 in the 3rd season of the UBAS has some of the usual suspects romping home, two close games and no real upsets. Nobody breaks 40 in the individual stats and 33 points is the highest individual total. I guess you'd call it Tuesday if it was a day of the week; ironically enough it is.
Maybe I should do some themed blogs on these rather than my usual 'stick to the games' stuff, but hey, you are what you are and I prefer to write about what I know (admittedly this limits me somewhat as I frequently become aware I don't really know much of anything).
Injuries
Kevin Johnson 1 - how important is KJ? We'll find out next game...
Gerald Wallace 11 - quite a stretch but hardly a major impact player so I guess noone will mind that much
Damon Stoudamire 4
Harry Gallatin 1
(36-33) Buffalo Braves 25 28 33 25 - 111 (Vince Carter 27)
(27-39) Golden State Wa 27 29 35 26 - 117 (George McGinnis 25)
Okay so I said no upsets but I guess you'd have to class this as a minor upset. Yes there's still some disparity in the records and the Warriors have never found their groove all season long (and certainly nothing in the way of consistency), but the Braves have had somewhat of a revival. At the mid-way point of the season the metaphoric towel was thrown in and Stokes was gone... at least he would have been but for a little mis-management at the top of the Braves organisation that meant the trade deadline passed before the signatures were inked and so a disgruntled Stokes stayed and didn't play. Stokes is back and Carter is still playing at a very high level this season and suddenly the Braves are fighting back towards the playoffs (and you better believe the bottom 4 seeds are watching in the NBA conference). Today though belonged to the much maligned but supremely talented (and wait for a couple of seasons) George McGinnis. His highly efficient 25 and 10 was fun even without the duel in the third quarter between Carter and he, but controlled the game down the stretch when Carter was drying up. Golden State themselves at one point this year were on course for about 20 wins so 35'ish wins will certainly show the direction they're moving in. Chris Paul has his usual double double with 14 dimes but is anyone else a little underwhelmed by Blake Griffin right now? I think he took a big step backwards this last year in the NBA and I think we're looking at something similar here in the UBAS? Buffalo can't afford to drop too many more - this drops them a game and half behind New Orleans and stops the 5 game win streak...
(52-14) Milwaukee Bucks 41 29 42 34 - 146 (Reggie Miller 33)
(24-42) Chicago Crusade 31 32 28 20 - 111 (Arvydas Sabonis 19)
Upset of the day is that the Bucks win big on the road where... oh yeah, where they often do. Reggie Miller chimes in top points for the day with his 33 in just 18 shots (good for 7th of the hot shots). Chicago I thought would be a notch better than they've played this year but being splattered by 35 points at home is just one of the things that happen if you play the Bucks and don't bring your A game. If Buffalo sneaks in to the playoffs they'll face the Milwaukee machine likely - not a great prospect of a second round appearance.
(38-31) Trenton Tigers 33 25 26 16 - 100 (Andrew Gaze 28)
(33-33) Indianapolis Ka 24 27 33 24 - 108 (Russell Westbrook 22)
The Kautsky's seem to go the way their petulant point guard goes and today he tops all with his 22 points on 70% shooting and his 13 dimes to accompany that. Indy is back playing .500 ball and can see Buffalo not too far ahead; gonna be an interesting chase down to end the season guys. Trenton have been solid this season and will see post-season action again - this one was all locked up after three before an icy fourth quarter where Glamack stunk up the joint (missing all 5 of his shots) and the team forgot to get the ball to Aussie sharp-shooter Andrew Gaze. 7 Steals too for Russell including 4 in the fourth!
(32-36) Fort Wayne Pist 28 33 39 20 - 120 (Kiki Vandeweghe 33)
(37-29) New Orleans Hor 26 42 27 27 - 122 (Chris Bosh 32)
Not so fast say the Hornets with a close outing against the scary yet non-playoff bound Pistons of Fort Wayne. The Hornets lost their way and the lead in the third but managed to clamp down on the Pistons in the fourth by doubling Kareem and forcing someone (anyone) other than Kiki to make a shot (he matched the day high of Miller for 33). The home town hero was the slightly weird yet effective Chris Bosh whose ugly jumpers were finding the bottom of the net and punishing the PFs of the Pistons. Ridiculous shooting percentages for Bosh and Kiki (combined 23 of 29) kept the crowd entertained to the end but Kawhai Leonard is the unlikely hero as in just 5 minutes of action his three point play in the last minute gave the Hornets the lead for good and the game to push them back a couple of games ahead of the chasing Braves.
(20-51) Wilkes-Barre Ba 31 26 23 26 - 106 (Karl Malone 22)
(20-47) Original Celtic 38 34 29 33 - 134 (Carmelo Anthony 29)
Winning just 20 games may not seem much but it's a milestone (if you don't reach it you'll hear it from the writers for sure) so it's good to see a team with 19 wins play a team with 20 and win to even it up! WBB were the worst team over the first two seasons and now they're not... quite. They are a team totally built for the future and Karl Malone will be as good as it gets in the league. Melo I don't care for much but he's the man today and the reason the OCs grab the W.
(20-47) St Louis Spirit 27 32 26 33 - 118 (Allen Iverson 32)
(25-45) Texas Chaparral 38 28 35 28 - 129 (Derrick Rose 21)
Texas should probably not get 25 wins this season with their roster overhaul, yet here they are with over 10 games to play at that mark. St Louis has 20 but other than providing some entertaining games and the odd decent game have been very disappointing. Iverson set out to teach Derrick Rose how to play today, he did that with his 33 points but the Spirits lost and his low percentage chucking didn't help. Rose has been super this year when not injured - solid double double again today.
(36-32) Denver Rockets 27 26 23 34 - 110 (Michael Jordan 25)
(49-20) Cincinnati Roya 33 29 26 46 - 134 (Bailey Howell 29)
Cincy is closing in on 50 and they place a decent smackdown on a Rockets team that can't quite seem to sustain a good run. McAdoo has not been a total failure but he hasn't quite lived up to his billing - has the pressure of MJ gotten to him? Howell and Mutumbo dominate the inside today and that's all she wrote.
(44-25) New York Rens 24 35 25 21 - 105 (Charles Barkley 19)
(51-19) Akron Firestone 27 26 26 29 - 108 (Tiny Archibald 29)
Akron are already over 50 and get a high quality win that will keep the Junior Ks (work it out) happy in the division of love (to hate). Archibald has been an absolute sensation in Akron this year (it's his only one at this level) and driving them to the point that they are even on the heels of the mighty Bucks (should that be hooves?). Today's matchup was a goodie as the Rens held the lead much of the game behind the solid play of Chuck down low but they just couldn't get enough rebounds (+13 for the Firestones) including 19 by big George Mikan.
(41-26) Seattle Superso 38 32 28 22 - 120 (Kobe Bryant 28)
(25-41) Oshkosh All Sta 26 32 24 27 - 109 (Jeff Ruland 24)
I'd love to write up about an upset to finish the game that would let my Knicks close right in on the Sonics but unfortunately the Seattle outfit waltzed in and out of Oshkosh with the double-digit victory that never seemed in that much doubt. KG and KB will be interesting for years to come (although my bet is KG gets traded for a different premiere star). What a modern roster Mr Gordon has put together; Harden, Kobe, KG, Rondo - can you imagine trying to coach that lineup! Good win today (damn it) that stops the three game slide and holds them in 5th (yikes a 41-26 record won't get you homecourt!!).
That's all folks :)
