UBAS Season 3 Day 98 - or Tuesday if you prefer...
So it must be that time of the week again when you need more nonsense from me. Fully settled in my new home and getting plans underway for the pool and extra bathroom and modifications already! I'm also coming to the states this year too... Although unless you live pretty close to Vegas (does anyone actually live in Vegas??) I may not catch you as we're only there for a week when my sister in law to be gets married (she'll actually be my sister in law before she gets married if you can work that one out).
Injuries
LeBron James 1
Terrell Brandon 3
Danny Granger 1
Kevin Martin 1
Chris Webber 11 - ouch, poor old CWeb goes down for a stretch..
(40-10) Milwaukee Bucks 26 29 29 32 - 116 (Amare Stoudemire 39)
(23-27) Indianapolis Ka 22 21 26 15 - 84 (Larry Bird 17)
Bucks pick themselves up and motor on in to another town, take no prisoners and roll back out. They remind me of how good the Lakers looked last season (not that they're much worse this year either mind you). Kautskys are still in contention for the 8th seed but not unless they start picking up some wins soon. Larry has been much maligned this year, but he's a strong guy and I would have picked him up for sure if he'd fallen a couple of notches to 16... Stoudemire's big game earns him player of the day; 39 points for the bespectacled Buck.
(18-31) Oshkosh All Sta 21 35 23 28 - 107 (Clyde Lovellette 21)
(28-22) New Orleans Hor 29 30 27 31 - 117 (Chris Bosh 27)
Hornets have a strong hold on a playoff position - they may be in 8th but no team below them is within four games of .500 (like Indy above). As deep and strong as the NBA conference is, it's beginning to take shape already for the post-season. Today a much needed home win over Sand Bag and the All-Stars keeps the pressure on those above and below. I much prefer Hornets to Pelicans. My daughter's school team I have the honour to coach are the Glamorgan Hornets; we've opted not to switch to Pelicans next season though! Top 3 today for Bosh and 10 for Lovellette.
(30-19) Seattle Superso 31 41 21 25 - 118 (Kevin Garnett 27)
(23-28) Buffalo Braves 33 36 29 26 - 124 (Vince Carter 31)
Are the Braves going to shake off the slump and make a charge for the playoffs? It's now or never and today at least they play a hell of a game over the much fancied Seattle Supersonics. The Sonics have had an awesome first half of the season and were pushing the Lakers hard, a quick look over their shoulder though and they see a couple of teams close behind... Carter was the scoring force today.... but Stokes is what fires this team (what will they do next year though?).
(33-18) New York Rens 29 34 24 23 - 110 (Leroy Edwards 21)
(21-30) Sheboygan Redsk 29 26 20 22 - 97 (LeBron James 17)
The Rens continue to impress and get a big away win over the self-proclaimed King of the UBAS and Sheboygan Redskins. Great throwback game by Edwards, King limps off at the start of the 4th with a sprained ego and the 'Skins collapse at the end.
(30-21) LA Stars 24 25 28 23 - 100 (Ed Macauley 27)
(22-28) Fort Wayne Pist 29 27 30 29 - 115 (Kiki Vandeweghe 25)
Another NBA team waiting in the wings is the Pistons. The trade rocked the team to its core but they are still a dangerous outfit and Kiki can certainly light it up. This is Jabbar's team and he is the difference today. Old School Ed Macauley is a current champion and has been the Stars difference maker this year - number 7 again on the hotshots today.
(30-20) New York Knicks 21 34 24 26 - 105 (Rick Barry 24)
(26-25) San Diego Sails 31 27 25 23 - 106 (Al Jefferson 23)
Game of the day featured the pre-season ABA favourite and reigning champion and overlooked Knicks in a pride battle. Great game with the Knicks surging back from a slow start to tie up the game on a mid-range Barry shot at 99 a piece. From then on the game swung backwards and forwards in the final two minutes. Knicks went up 105-104 on a jam by Derrick Coleman off Cousy's 13th dazzler with just 4 ticks on the clock forcing the final time out by the Sails. Damn it though if TMac didn't cooly stroke in a 19 foot jump shot as the buzzer expired to send the home town fans into a frenzy. Tough loss for the Knicks who were rising up the rankings and in the midst of a 6 game winning streak... about to follow is a 6 game losing streak probably for the 'rasher' Knicks! Cousy and DC top 10 but the Hakeem less Sails still get it done at home.
(40-12) Akron Firestone 26 32 25 25 - 108 (George Mikan 26)
(31-21) Philadelphia Sp 16 22 38 35 - 111 (Terry Cummings 30)
Another close game between two good teams, the Sphas have definitely upped their game recently and with this squeaker over the dominant Firestones they have announced they are for real in the ABA and a contender too. Mikan has been on a tear recently, but TC is the man today for Philly and they roar back in the fourth quarter and steal the game away.
(24-28) Charlotte Bobca 36 28 35 27 - 126 (Oscar Robertson 25)
(21-30) Brooklyn Indian 37 27 42 33 - 139 (Kevin Durant 26)
Robertson scores one less point than Durant but thanks to his all-round game he is higher in hot shots today - Durant doesn't care though, he's all about the wins and Brooklyn gets a good one while the Bobcats drop one they'd like to have back. Remember when the Indians were over .500 - could do with a ten game win-streak now to get back in the ABA race...
(17-33) Boston Celtics 25 24 33 17 - 99 (Tom Heinsohn 16)
(24-27) Carolina Cougar 38 21 36 25 - 120 (Kevin Love 22)
Ah, but before we announce playoff teams here come the Cougars. Solid home win over a disappointing Celtic outfit puts them just three games back of .500. Love remains as good a 'new' player as there is according to HAL - injuries aside of course.
