Day 19 already in the UBAL - teams have played 10 or 11 games so we get a pretty good percentage look at the teams at the top and the bottom - no unbeaten teams but one or two still without a win.. surely today changes that?
Injuries
David Lee 3 (Ankle Ligament Tear)
Anfernee Hardaway 1 (Patella Tendinitis)
( 8- 2) BOSTON 27 30 27 29 - 113 (Scottie Pippen 23)
( 4- 5) TORONTO 20 35 23 22 - 100 (Kevin Durant 21)
Okay Boston is firmly in the 'top' camp and they solidify that with another good road win today over a much-improved Toronto outfit. Durant does what he does and it's good enough against the mid-tier teams at home, but not against the likes of the mighty Celtics as all-around gel man Scottie takes the day and game.
( 3- 7) NEW JERSEY 29 31 26 31 - 117 (Lou Hudson 24)
( 0-10) SAN ANTONIO 20 30 28 26 - 104 (Russell Westbrook 17)
Quickly to the bottom and the Spurs are having a crappy start to season 10. Visiting New Jersey was happy to face them and pick up win number 3 for their own slow start behind Warren Jabali's solid double double. Newbie Archie Clark plays 39 minutes and scores 17 points on a solid 8-14 effort, but San Antonio looks all over the place again.
( 6- 4) KENTUCKY 24 18 32 27 - 101 (Kareem AbdulJabbar 27)
( 5- 5) ORLANDO 31 37 41 27 - 136 (Kevin Garnett 21)
You know I think Orlando will be just fine with the Big Ticket. Early talk about how the trade of crowd favourite Hakeem and PG Cousy to Utah had ruined their season may have been premature as the Magic find their groove (Magic losing an all-star centre, surely not again?), but KG is the real-deal and if Orlando plays like they did today in blasting off powerhouse Kentucky by 35 it could show danger signs for the NBA and UBAL as a whole. Kareem was solid for Kentucky but the rest of the team didn't show.
( 2- 9) PITTSBURGH 17 30 34 22 10 - 113 (Mel Daniels 19)
( 2- 7) SEATTLE 20 28 27 28 15 - 118 (Tom Heinsohn 19)
Seattle picks up win number 2!! Blake Griffin with a double double and Tyreke Evans with an impressive all-round game (2 assists off the triple double) lead them over an equally struggling Pitt team despite the efforts of Gus and Mel (big double doubles). New boy Bosh puts in 6 points too..
( 9- 2) SAN DIEGO 28 24 35 34 - 121 (Kobe Bryant 28)
( 8- 2) CLEVELAND 22 31 22 43 - 118 (Julius Erving 25)
So is the Kobe trade for San Diego still looking like a bust? May not be a completely fair comparison as the good Dr was missing a couple of starters in Penny and KJ but one thing is for sure; San Diego is riding high right now and rightfully so after this away win over top team Cleveland. In all fairness to the Qs they had a STACKED roster before the season started but they have for the last three or four years and always under perform; they need a shake up and Kobe Bean may just be that shake-up; good luck to a GM prepared to roll the dice.
( 8- 2) HOUSTON 33 28 34 18 - 113 (Karl Malone 26)
( 3- 7) VIRGINIA 20 23 30 29 - 102 (Pervis Ellison 18)
Yeah Houston is good and the mailman is the epitome of consistency for them with another solid game over Ginny. Virginia is in its self-confessed down year this year; they'll still pick off the low hanging fruit and anyone who doesn't pay attention, but Houston is one of the clear early favourites. Jimmy Jones was a great pick up for the Rockets and his 25 was needed today to battle hot shooting Pervis Ellison.
( 5- 5) BALTIMORE 25 21 36 33 - 115 (Allen Iverson 31)
( 3- 7) UTAH 31 24 29 34 - 118 (Hakeem Olajuwon 25)
Utah's recent trade may have almost gone under the radar, but bringing in Tracy McGrady was supposed to result in these type of wins. Baltimore is touted as a contender but slip back to .500 as Hakeem controls the paint before fouling out in this close encounter. Iverson had a chance to send it to OT but his long range effort over Carter fell well short and the Utah crowd celebrated just their third win of the season. Afterwards coach Young declared Utah was a playoff team; a bold prediction for a .300 record; time will tell.
( 5- 5) NEW ORLEANS 32 37 37 29 - 135 (Jerome Kersey 30)
( 4- 6) WASHINGTON 26 32 29 37 - 124 (Terry Cummings 27)
Great away win for NO over the home town Bullets with Kersey's stellar 30 point performance leading the way. TC fought hard in defeat but Washington are a player or two away from contention right now
( 7- 3) DALLAS 37 37 33 31 - 138 (Jerry West 23)
( 4- 6) CAROLINA 25 31 39 19 - 114 (Dell Curry 25)
Dallas continues their great start to season 10 with a solid thwapping over home-team Carolina. West continues to shine and is enjoying not being injured this year. Dallas controlled the glass (despite not having a single player in double digit rebounds) and played unselfish basketball to better Curry's hot shooting and a good all-round effort by Josh Smith.
