Season 10 trucks along merrily and the gap between the haves and the have-nots seems to widen. Is anyone making a move up or down or are we just in holding patterns for playoffs already? A few more trades might just shake things up..
Injuries
All big names in the injury list today.. fortunately none for too long but will Chuck's shoulder cause his shooting to drop off in Baltimore?
Tyreke Evans 1 (Neck Ligament Sprain)
Tony Parker 2 (Rib Muscle Sprain)
Clyde Drexler 2 (Shin Splints)
Dikembe Mutombo 2 (Food Poisoning)
Kevin Johnson 2 (Thumb Ligament Sprain)
Charles Barkley 3 (Shoulder Dislocation)
( 0-13) SAN ANTONIO 33 16 21 26 - 96 (JJ Hickson 17)
( 6- 7) NEW JERSEY 27 28 35 26 - 116 (Orlando Woolridge 22)
Jersey are on the move in the right direction which will hopefully keep their outspoken coach Steve Hutson happy. He loves big Bradley and he chips in 10 boards today but Orlando Woolridge provided the punch to keep San Antonio winless. Poor Coach Gordon has had enough of season 10 I would imagine as the Spurs maintain their record in futility and an appalling start to the season.
( 2-12) PITTSBURGH 20 23 38 22 - 103 (Gus Johnson 22)
( 8- 5) DALLAS 35 29 28 24 - 116 (Jerry West 22)
Pittsburgh are another 'have-not' and things don't look like changing right now. Honeycomb is a great guy to have on your team and Mel Daniels double-doubles consistently but there's no spark here unless John Wall can turn it around this year in the NBA. Dallas are back and are looking like a playoff team behind the great Jerry West and a great game by Gary Payton. No the game wasn't that close as blow-out mode in the 4th allowed Pitt the chance to close but the game was never in doubt as Dallas led from the opening tip.
( 2-10) SEATTLE 30 30 34 22 - 116 (Mike Green 19)
(10- 3) HOUSTON 25 44 32 26 - 127 (Clyde Drexler 24)
In another battle of the have versus the have-nots Houston made rather hard work of lowly Seattle. Seattle has some bright future ahead as Blake again solidly double-doubles and Tony Parker provides sparks at the PG spot. In the end just too much depth in the Rocket's lineup and today it was Clyde the Glide who sparked the home side with 24 points in 26 minutes to keep enough separation between the teams.
( 4- 9) VIRGINIA 29 27 27 27 10 - 120 (Rashard Lewis 21)
(12- 2) SAN DIEGO 24 33 31 22 11 - 121 (Elgin Baylor 27)
We're used to seeing good winning records from the Qs and Squires, but this year Virginia has struggled and San Diego has found its groove with new leader Kobe Bean Bryant. This was never going to be as easy as the records suggest though, and we have our first close game of the day as the Squires push the Qs to OT behind Rashard Lewis and his 21 points. Elgin Baylor and Nate Thurmond posted impressive double-doubles as they battled against the nasty frontline of Bill Laimbeer and Willie Naulls - eventually fouling them both out late in the fourth quarter. Kobe was horrible most of the game but 6 points in the OT including the game winning mid-range jump shot was enough to show why he is their leader and a team to be feared.
(10- 3) CLEVELAND 30 26 26 31 - 113 (Kevin Johnson 28)
( 7- 6) NEW YORK 24 27 36 29 - 116 (EddieA Johnson 31)
Cleveland has been a powerhouse this year too and the addition of Dr J has sparked them in one of those great win-win trades (for the afore mentioned Kobe) {The greatest win-win trade in UBA history I claim was between the Texas Chaps and NY Knicks in the UBAS as the trade in season 1 with Ray Felix and Cornbread Maxwell led to Finals matchups between the two teams on both seasons so far - one a piece!}. In a battle of the Johnsons (that sounded better in my head) today belonged to the Knicks and Eddie A as they again moved over .500 and downed the mighty Cavs. Dr J was off all game, and when KJ fouled out late in the fourth it was over. An upset win? For sure, but in the UBAL a good team can beat a great team on a good day (and most likely at home). Can NY build on this?
( 5- 8) UTAH 29 33 31 35 - 128 (Tracy McGrady 18)
( 6- 7) PORTLAND 24 27 27 36 - 114 (Sam Jones 25)
Early season disappointment for the Stars led to a host of trades to bring in some new talent and the roster now boasts a tandem of cousins Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady at the swing spots. Kemp and newbie today Bailey Howell were brought in to give Oakley some help at the power forward spot whilst Hakeem holds down the Centre. Coach Young says this is a playoff squad but they'll need plenty of wins like this solid away win over middle-of the pack Portland to prove that and have anyone take them seriously this year. Today TMac was the best player on the floor for the Stars in a good all-round effort, but Sam Jones 9-12 shooting kept Portland close but they never led and could never quite rally that comeback the home crowd longed for. Double 16s and 6 blocks for George Mikan in the losing effort.
( 5- 8) CAROLINA 21 20 22 27 - 90 (Hersey Hawkins 21)
( 8- 5) NEW ORLEANS 21 25 35 25 - 106 (Eric Murdock 18)
New Orleans looks playoff bound with a solid win over struggling Carolina. The game could have been close but A-Train was not on the tracks today and struggled against Ewing and the big frontline of NO. Of note though, Ewing managed to only grab one rebound in 30 minutes of play. The game was close at the half but a surge (or Serge?) by New Orleans to start the third that Carolina had no answer for beyond sharp-shooting Hawkins meant the victory was sealed early.
( 5- 8) WASHINGTON 43 21 24 33 - 121 (Terry Cummings 24)
( 7- 6) BALTIMORE 35 31 29 38 - 133 (Pau Gasol 27)
Highly touted before the season Baltimore have blown hot and cold so far this year and were happy to see off the Generals at home. Gasol has been great this year but without Chuck for the next three games will they struggle again? Washington is neither here nor there right now, TC fills up the box score and they see off the weaker teams, but don't look good enough against the upper part of the league to challenge for the playoffs this year; trades coming for Coach K? Vocal coach Kik Jnr was happy with the Red today as Robbins grabbed dual 17s and Michael racked up the points on the way to a comfortable win for the home team. Hollywood Harper provided some bright spots for Washington in defeat in his re-gen rookie year.
( 6- 7) DETROIT 28 35 33 31 - 127 (Mitch Richmond 21)
( 5- 9) ANAHEIM 33 21 21 43 - 118 (David Thompson 40)
DT led the league tonight in scoring as he fired away for 40, but it still wasn't enough for the home-town Amigos as a determined Detroit outfit rallied behind the hot-hand of Mitch Richmond fresh off the plane from being traded from Utah the day before. Richmond is an out and out scorer and should be a welcome addition to Detroit meshing well with their stars Elvin Hayes who controlled the paint, and PG Chris Paul who knows how to find the scorers, in the win. 18 of 24 for Thompson would usually be enough, but Anaheim does have a certain reluctance to play defence and tonight that cost them the game.
That's all folks..
