UBAL Season 10 Day 26

Day 26 rolls around (not surprisingly on the heels of day 25) in the UBAL, several of the 'power teams' in action and a couple of the weaker ones so should be quick and easy to write up eh? We'll see.. Amazing how injuries can change the landscape and quickly..

Injuries
Art Becker 1 (Nose Broken)
Bob McAdoo 1 (Flu Like Symptoms)
Steve Francis 5 (Hamstring Muscle Tendon Sprain)
Jermaine O’Neal 14 (Knee Cartilage Damage)
Xavier McDaniel 1 (Ankle Ligament Sprain)

( 7- 7) MIAMI 33 30 32 31 - 126 (Charlie Scott 25)
(10- 3) INDIANA 38 35 31 33 - 137 (Willie Wise 36)
Miami is sitting around that .500 spot whilst Indiana is surging this season. True to form Indy holds home court with a quick word to the Wise not to take Willie or the rest of the team for granted for right now. Kevin Love seriously outplayed Shaquille in this one and that was essentially the ball game (3 rebounds big fella?). Nice performance by Mick Kupchack who is having a good summer by all accounts...

( 2-12) LOS ANGELES 31 32 29 40 - 132 (Monta Ellis 26)
( 1-13) ST. LOUIS 23 40 16 33 - 112 (Geoff Petrie 29)
When two teams with 1-12 records meet, one of them has to double their wins I guess. St Louis fails to grab what could loosely be called momentum and get well beaten in the end by the visiting Lakers. LA took advantage of playing one of the real weak teams in the league and Ellis showed he can score at this level, as did Ray Allen as expected. Parish was a hero who did the rest whilst Peaches scored an impressive 29 in just 26 minutes of play to keep it respectable.

(10- 3) OAKLAND 32 29 26 26 - 113 (Dwight Howard 21)
( 3-11) PHILADELPHIA 24 25 29 20 - 98 (Tom Meschery 19)
Oakland continues to impress in season 10, one of the great things about the squad that boasts Superman is that he is a background kind of guy for them rather than entering the all-star type debate. Make no mistake though, the trio of Silas, Howard and McHale is a powerful combination that someone will need to deal with come playoffs. Philly is not going to make the playoffs or challenge the top teams this year...

(12- 1) CHICAGO 28 28 32 28 - 116 (Chet Walker 23)
(10- 4) HARLEM 31 25 32 20 - 108 (Wilt Chamberlain 26)
Oakland are a powerhouse but Chicago looks oh so good this year as they stick it to Wilt on Harlem's home court. No love lost between coaches Tony Hyde and Kwame Kitson who could be heard tossing taunts during a late timeout a la Phil Jackson and Mike D'Antoni as Tony politely asked Kwame to sit down after calling a late time out once his Bulls had already sealed the game. So many weapons on Da Bulls, led by the greatest point guard in history and Havlicek. The unlikely pairing of Laker and Celtic greats is truly formidable, can any team boast a better backcourt? Wilt this year is human but he's still one hell of a human being and today he single handedly kept this close with 26 points 20 rebounds and 7 blocks (that's a stats line Steve!).

( 6- 7) SYRACUSE 25 32 33 24 - 114 (Joe Johnson 24)
( 6- 7) TORONTO 28 26 36 32 - 122 (Kevin Durant 41)
The young guns squares off and fought out a good game, great to see Joe Johnson, LBJ and Durantula going at it on the stage of legends. Today KD effortlessly pours in 41 and Toronto gets closer to .500 with its maturing roster. 21 points 17 assists and 8 bounds today for Oscar.. Hope Lebron is learning from Robertson in his last hurrah..

( 5- 8) ROCHESTER 21 20 31 19 - 91 (Larry Kenon 18)
( 8- 6) ORLANDO 23 31 23 28 - 105 (Bob Dandridge 19)
Quietly the Magic are improving to where they are expected to be. Not KG's best effort but just enough all round to keep the Royals off the pace. Kenon is a good UBAL player and today he gave the Royals a chance but they couldn't capitalize on his scoring and rebounding to get close enough to the Magic.

(11- 3) BOSTON 22 26 33 22 - 103 (Scottie Pippen 18)
( 7- 6) PHOENIX 31 33 18 27 - 109 (Jay Vincent 20)
Boston is a class team. Unfortunately the Suns don't care and defend home court despite letting the lead slip away early in the second half. This defensive battle was a battle of the Bills featuring Bill Walton and the best defensive big man of all time in Bill Russell. Can you dominate with 11 points? Yes when you pull down 26 boards and block 8 shots, but the other Bill still hit 8 of 9 and Steve Nash dazzled with 16 dimes and the Suns eeked out the win.

( 8- 6) KENTUCKY 35 27 31 22 - 115 (Kareem AbdulJabbar 32)
( 9- 5) MEMPHIS 33 33 41 23 - 130 (Adrian Dantley 36)
Memphis may have slowed the early pace, but they're a class outfit and too much at home today for Jabbar's Colonels. Kentucky was looking to keep pace with the Harlems and Bostons of the league (if not the Chicagos) but their not quite so formidable right now and vulnerable on the road to the better teams. AD has one of the best offensive games of any era and can flat out score from all over the place, especially down on the block where he out maneuvers opponents with his rear end to score seemingly at will.. 36 today, including a perfect 12 for 12 from the charity stripe. Kentucky will be very strong though when 'Nique and Ruland return from injuries so don't take them lightly too early.

(11- 3) MINNESOTA 27 26 30 19 - 102 (Phil Smith 22)
( 4-10) VIRGINIA 29 23 17 25 - 94 (Moses Malone 18)
Poor Ginny just don't look too good this year and Minnesota are one of the pleasant surprises that just keep winning. Today on the road proves no trouble behind a very strong 3rd quarter and some tight second half defence. Check out Sam Lacey with 14 rebounds and 7 assists.. To go with zero points! Malone chips in his standard double-double but you bet that Virgina would like to see Larry Bird in uniform (sorry, not for 19 more games according to team drs)..

That's all from me till next week when I'll be writing from Learn X in Melbourne. (Adam and Shaun I'm around Tue to Fri so let's get a beer and photo op in!)
