Game 3 is when you often get the shape of a series - a 3-0 comeback is rarer than rockinghorse poo so that's a given but after three games someone has to have a lead (hey, check out the mathematical calculation - I did that in my head!). But the lead can let you know if the team is capitalising on an away win in the first two games or fighting their way back into the series. Who's playing game 4 for respect and who's playing for their place in the next round?
Just to change it up again I'm gonna talk about the individual ratings first then some games and then give you the low-down.
Today the best player was Jerry West. That's because Jerry West was great - deja vu? Tim Duncan was fundamentally sound (of course), Wilt was good; but lets take a look at some other players entering the top 10. The Goods steps up and takes a break from the cartoon that his life has become and shows his jack of all trades game, Big E plays the way he can but was it enough for Kansas? Cooz was great with another solid double double and strong defense for the 7 spot, Neil Johnston pops up for Trenton; enough for the Tigers to take a huge lead? How about Dave Cowens stepping up bid for Texas, but was it big enough to regain home court? BBJ favourite Bob Pettit shows his prowess but was it enough to stop Hawaii sliding towards oblivion? The forgotten Knick starter but star of the little known but best judge of a player in the UBA (no, I'm not telling you, work it out for yourself) was a defensive juggernaut but enough for the Knicks to put Seattle on the brink?

Okay, on to the games..
Sorry about the small fonts - it's that silly UBA program out put (sorry Jim, it's great in every way.. but how about CSV as an output?)
The Sails ride the high winds to stamp out any thoughts of a long series. Chuck is battling away but he's out of his depth here and the Sails will win this one either next game or the one after barring a freak boating accident taking out the starting 5..

So the Chaps ride in to face the Stars knowing a win will put them right back where they want to be after putting the beat down on the Stars in game 2; but no. Step up Dave Cowens and even a so-so game from Shaq Daddy is enough it seems.. poor shooting and a mass of turnovers as the tension showed between these two, but the Stars are showing this is no fluke. Texas needs to find another level.. although after three games the famous quote is how much closer could it be?

Say it ain't so Jeff.. not a game winner? No actually a choke at the line.. a furious fourth quarter with lead changes and back and forth in a run and gun affair was decided at the line where yesterday's hero Ray Williams gets fouled on a last minute drive to the hole by Elgin Baylor in what looked like a game changing play. But Ray misses the first and Trenton calls timeout. Discussing how to win with 0.8 seconds on the clock or accept OT. Ray Williams steps up to the line and the wind changed direction, the free throw circled once, then again before changing direction and rolling off the rim. A crowd of players went for the board and the ball bobbled away as the clock expired. A very bitter pill for the Chiefs to swallow but the Tigers deserve a heap of credit.. question is, how much pride is left in Hawaii after this heartbreaker?

This sure looks like Kansas as the Steers win the easiest game of the night with a good team game and the scoring of Bob Dandridge. I still say 7 games, but Keith has to get his troops more fired up for the crusade than they were today. You won't win many games shooting 37% from the field and with a minus 17 on the boards. Solid win by KC to back up the one they got in the windy city.

Knicks knew they needed more of a performance than the squeaker in game 2 over the tough Sonics and today the starting 5 were great piling in 101 points on their own led by Easy Ed and his smooth stroke for 32. Again the Sonics shoot better and out-rebound the Knicks but the TOs and steals of the Knicks (14) again changed the game in the second half. The Knicks knew this would be a great one to get to break the back of the Sonics; the only way back now is that long and unlikely road.. is it pride or can they actually turn this series? Spike says throw in the towel..

OVERTIME OVERTIME OVERTIME OVERTIME OVERTIME
The Lakers are on a roll.. this is their 14th straight win and with three of them coming against Wilt you have to be impressed as they must be the out and out favourites right now. Duncan was just doing everything in his quiet and unassuming way that often gets mistaken for nothing special.. it is and the Lakers rode him through this one. The observant among you may have noticed that this was an OT game. The game seemed set with Anderson up 4 but a Wilt turnover (his only of the game) followed a defensive board that handed the ball to Pollard to put the Lakers down two. Must See BG then tried to dunk over David Robinson but got called for the offensive foul using his off hand (now you know it's fantasy!) and Duncan cooly banked home a 15 footer to send it to OT. Only the Brazilian Blur could keep it close scoring 6 of Anderson's 8 in OT but the team had lost heart and the game slipped away from the Packers and perhaps the season to follow..

I'm calling this an upset. Honestly I thought the Bucks were going to give the Firestones fits but it looks like a mismatch out there. Jerry West is all over the court and all Larry can do is say 'Jerry is simply the greatest basketball player I've ever seen' as he holds back the tears knowing that beating Akron 4 straight is like finding somebody new in his hometown. One day they'll make a logo out of that man and use it for the league.. was it the loss of Bill Walton? To add insult to injury (literally) AK47 joins the walking wounded for the hapless Bucks.. I can't see any way for the Bucks to climb back in this series..

Have I underestimated the O'Donnells again? Quite possibly as Buffalo continues to show they are for real and backup the upset in game 2 with a solid win at home in front of their hooting and cowbell ringing fans. Vince Carter is a true UBA stud and his game is perfectly suited to the way the Braves carve up the highly rated Pistons today. Looking at the box score it's not a player but a mesh of players and that's how you do it people.. KAJ was way too human and fouling out early in the fourth opened the lane and the Braves took full advantage. Is game 4 a must win for the Pistons? Robert will be looking for more from Kareem, Zeke and McAdoo if they're going to even this up.. and Chris Paul is back game after next if they can't.

That's it folks, I'm done.. it's past midnight again and some of us have to pretend to work hard tomorrow..
Come strong in game 4 or some really will be on the bus home (and man that's a long ride).
