Today's games were a battlefield, fortunately the injuries were limited to just Jerome Kersey and Nick Anderson - each both out for a single game, but the mental scars may last far longer for the teams that lost - particularly losing big or losing close; those two are definitely the worst type of way to lose and I'm not sure which hurts the most but at least losing big tends to be a slow deep pain not the sharpest of pain caused by losing a game you thought you'd won.
I've decided to order the games differently to the standard today, building them each up on how close or how shocking they were; hope nobody minds my poetic license?

( 0- 2) New York Rens 18 23 32 15 - 88 (Charles Barkley 18)
( 2- 0) San Diego Sails 24 29 31 29 - 113 (Bob Rule 23)
An absolutely brutal start to day 2 for the Rens and an awakening about playoff life against a dominant Sails. Barkley was the lone dog out there for the Rens as the Sails pound them at both ends of the floor, rendering their offensive ineffective and seemingly scoring at will. NY trailed all game but the fourth quarter was just a layup drill for the Sails. Rens find themselves down 2 zip and looking for a way, anyway, to get back in to the series before it's over. Step 1; find a way to stop Bob Rule running all over you.

( 1- 1) LA Stars 21 22 11 17 - 71 (Shaquille O'Neal 17)
( 1- 1) Texas Chaparral 19 28 27 22 - 96 (Tim Hardaway 17)
Did someone say BRUTAL. Both the 'other' LA and NY experience beatdowns today and this one was vicious. Shaq saw fast double and triple teams as the Chaps showed their angry side after the monumental disappointment of dropping a game 1 at home. Shaq had a 17-17 double-double but shot 35% from the field and that's bad when you only shoot from three feet away or less. The shooting was so bad that the teams combined for 118 rebounds.. welcome to playoff basketball! If you lose the first game at home this is the way to play the second. LA has the home court advantage, can they use it from here?
( 0- 2) Anderson Packers 18 31 24 24 - 97 (Hersey Hawkins 18)
( 2- 0) LA Lakers 27 40 19 30 - 116 (Tim Duncan 31)
Just like the two before this wasn't a close contest. Wilt looks like David against the Lakers Goliath of Duncan and Robinson. If Wilt shoots this bad (5-18 today and 4-10 from the stripe) then this series will be over quickly. Robinson took Shaq to school with 25 points in just 25 minutes and 13 boards to boot before quickly fouling out too! The real difference was the (predicted by BBJ/Tosh) play of Pollard an efficient 18 points and 15 boards. The rebounds were earned by the Lakers with a 61-47 edge. Must win in Anderson for the pack if they hope to make a series of it.
( 0- 2) Hawaii Chiefs 28 31 31 26 - 116 (Ray Williams 33)
( 2- 0) Trenton Tigers 44 25 19 37 - 125 (Andrew Gaze 28)
The Chiefs are again bested by the Tigers of Trenton led by laser Gaze and his 28 points. Individual performance of the day went to Ray Williams and his stellar 33 point outburst, but a strong 4th quarter performance left the Chiefs broken after coming all the way back from 18 down in the first half to take the lead at the end of the 3rd only to fall short again. Still the long trip to Hawaii may just be enough to get Hawaii back into the series; but only if they're able to slow down the speed the cats are currently scoring at. Game 3 is a must-win if the predictions of a 7-game series are going to be accurate. At least Ray Williams gets to go home now (sorry.. bad joke)..
( 1- 1) Kansas City Steers 26 26 27 32 - 111 (Reggie Theus 20)
( 1- 1) Chicago Crusaders 28 25 22 26 - 101 (Ed Sadowski 19)
Now technically a 10 point game isn't as close as a 9 point game, but this game was CLOSE until the last two minutes when the Steer suddenly grasped control of the game and possibly the series. Heralded as the series too tight to call (although BBJ went Steers, and I went Crusaders) and the one both predicted to go 7 looks right on track to do that. The pressure now falls on the Crusaders to get one back off the Steers in Kansas. Today it was a game played with great parity as a dozen players scored in double digits and no-one put together the complete game; the scorers scored and the rebounders rebounded.. you get the picture. On to game 3 in Kansas Dorothy.

( 1- 1) Buffalo Braves 23 37 32 21 - 113 (Rick Barry 27)
( 1- 1) Fort Wayne Pistons 23 28 27 31 - 109 (Isiah Thomas 22)
Just like that we have back-to-back away wins and another tied series between the stubborn Braves and skilled Pistons. I couldn't see a way for the Braves to get one in FW, but the Braves have been a pleasant surprise for the UBAS all season long and today was no exception as coach of the year candidate Dustin O'Donnell pulls off another great game led by Rick Barry's 27. If I'd used science in my prediction maybe I'd have seen this coming as the Braves were THE best road team all year long; although they're wobbly at home against the top teams so you know this is far from over. The Pistons go hot and cold and today after being outplayed all game they suddenly find their stride at the end of the game but run out of clock in the comeback effort. This is shaping up to be one hell of a series.. can't wait for game 3..
( 0- 2) Milwaukee Bucks 29 28 23 32 - 112 (Anfernee Hardaway 23)
( 2- 0) Akron Firestones 35 19 37 24 - 115 (Jerry West 30)
So was my prediction of the Bucks in 7 way off? Maybe so as they succumb again to the Firestones of Akron in a thrilling encounter that was full of swings and big runs. The Firestones started off big, back game the Bucks to end the half but they got blasted out of the gates in the third before somehow clawing back in riding Penny's hot hand, but the memo about Jerry West got missed and Jerry made them pay as he scored the last 4 points down the stretch to hold off the team no-body wanted to face. Are the Bucks done? I don't think so, not at all. There will be at least six games in this series or.. well.. it will be one less game report next week when I do the writeups!! Man I love Jerry West; if I could bring back 5 guys from the past he'd be one of them (okay, since you ask, not in any order and nothing to do with who is the best just for pure fun: Dr J, Magic, MJ and Oscar - yes I love the do it all skill and burning intensity). Just for the fun of it the 5 prime-time stars I'd take out to replace with their alter-egos from long ago; Lebron, Melo, Griffin, Westbrook (rave all you like, don't like the guy and it's my blog) and Paul Pierce; you can match them up if you're able.
( 0- 2) Seattle Supersonics 26 27 29 31 - 113 (Andy Phillip 23)
( 2- 0) New York Knicks 26 33 22 33 - 114 (Bob Cousy 24)
After compressing 30 hours of flights into one twenty four hour period not to mention the 7 previous games I was kept on the edge of my seat by this monstrous thriller of a game that seemed locked from start to finish. The Knicks never bought in to the sweep talk for the series and just as well as it took every piece of the franchise to survive a determined Sonics squad that just wouldn't go away. Andy Phillip has been a great performer for them all year and the unheralded squad has been coached to perfection by Shaun and all but pulled off the shock of the night when Ed Macauley drained a long range deuce as the buzzer sounded to lift the roof of Madison Square Garden. The Sonics shot over 50% and outrebounded the Knicks by 4, had more assists, less fouls and hit a better percentage from downtown. How did the Knicks carve a win from this? Through the one area they've led the league all year - forcing turnovers and getting steals.. even so, it took a buzzer beater and some missed free-throws in the last minute to steal the game. Now the trip to Seattle for the Knicks who know they'll have to play a whole lot better if they want to take one away from the Sonics on their home floor.
That's all for today folks, if you team won.. congratulations! If they lost.. commiserations.. and if they weren't playing at all.. thanks for bothering to read you're a true UBAS fan!!
By next week the first round will be over and we'll be down to the 8 best teams (well maybe 6 of the 8..)
The box scores are below in small cos that's the way the format goes..
