UBAL Day 49 of Season 14

Any of you who follow on Slack (surely that's everyone right?) will have seen my recent comments on Tim Duncan.  Let's start with that. Tim Duncan is a stand-up guy and a top 10 all-time player for sure. He may be the best PF of all time (only may, personally I think he's just holding that honour for Lebron to take from him) and as Stan put it, he's the best PF/C of all time.  I've got no issues with it, but I think we are all too easily swayed by media and personality types on these professional athletes. Tim Duncan is a great player and from what I can tell from the way he plays and what people say he's a good guy too; but lets really put it in perspective, he played the game he loves and he took home more in some seasons than the rest of us will ever see in our lifetimes.  Someone who gives their only dollar is more generous than someone who knocks a bit of there wealth.

Again, I love Duncan, I have him in this league after all in Utah, but he's a professional basketball player not a saint of course.  On the converse there's always those Kobe hits.  Kobe is a driven personality that makes him somewhat of an a-hole.  He didn't take a massive pay-cut in his last couple of years, but was that really his fault on any level? The negotiations would have been between the management and the rep.  I seriously doubt that Kobe was 'holding out' for a better offer with his last contract.  I'll ask you this, if you were offered triple your current payroll to do the same job, knowing that your (huge) departmental budget would suffer would you say no? Would you say I'll take a fraction of that? I highly doubt it, most of us may consider holding still, heck I've moved job for less pay and more satisfaction, but I've never stayed in the same job and agreed to take a pay hit for the good of the company. Are these mega-contracts a mistake? Probably, in fact we're overpaying all our sports people because we're overpaying for sports, but this is pure economics, not good guy or bad guy stuff unless we read what the press gives us.

Meh, on to the games!

Kawhi Leonard is the star of this Rockets team, but seriously look at the depth they have combined with the young fellas and tell me this team isn't scary good? Rondo, Durant, CP3, Kawhi, Favors, Greek freak... you can also tell that the Commish has morphed himself into a modern man too with those players... in fact, find an 'old' player on his roster that plays... oh, they won easily over the Blazers too - 7 in double digits.  Earl Monroe was notable in defeat for the home-town Blazers.

Another thing we confuse with good and bad is the level of extroversion. 'Quiet guys' often get portrayed as good guys.  Extroverts and introverts alike are a mixed bag, some are good, some are bad and nearly all of them are somewhere in between - need to remember that the world is grey, not black and white, whatever your beliefs. Oh, and did I mention UPSET? Nobody expects the red-hot Raps to drop a game at home, but the Miami boys fly North and steal the game thanks to Lou Hudson and Kevin Love.  Michael Adams 3-12 stunk up the joint, Barkley fouled out and Malone was not himself.  In the greatest PF argument Malone was once the most favoured I believe... both him and Barkley were somewhat lowered because of their inability to get a ring - another measure that's not quite right.  Sometimes it's largely attributed to one guy, but let's face it this is a team game that stretches well beyond just the players.

I'd probably call this one an upset too. Spurs were sitting at .500 and the Pistons were one of the hot teams in the NBA conference where there's more meh teams, but the Spurs played solid through the second and third and left no chance of a comeback for the Pistons.  Shaq was dominant, I honestly think if he'd had a slightly different approach he would now be considered the greatest big man of all time rather than just one of.  There again, there's the media rep and then there's probably reality so who knows for sure.  19 and 9 isn't uber dominant though and the Pistons needed more today. Roundfield gets 4 and 4 and then shipped out to Trenton for Faried. Westbrook nearly triple doubles - just imagine how many of them he's going to get in the 2016/7 NBA season? Lots I reckon, but his scoring average will surely rise.

Colonels with a solid win riding the longevity of Kareem for another season, this game was over early and the Suns could never seem to get their groove on.  Recently deceased Thurmond plays in Phoenix of course. On that one, do you ever wonder what today's media would have done with any of these old guys? Can you imagine the scandals breaking into the private lives of guys like Nate.. media has definitely changed the way we see things. David West is an example, making the ultimate sacrifice one minute for the good of a team and the next he's a sell-out doing whatever it takes to get a a ring... truth might be somewhere between the two, but he does get the W today and a nice double-double to boot.

Cavs have been winning recently and they're now a double digit win team thanks to a tight one over Denver in Cleveland. All offensive game with both teams up over 50% shooting and multiple double-digit scorers (defense was optional).  Of course Denver's not been winning so there is that.

Qs unfortunately get it done and remain hot on the heels of the Stars in the ABA Wild West. Bells was ringing them in from all over the place and has a big 24 points and 17 boards... backed up by Tom Heinsohn with 20 and 14 of his own.  Kobe is enjoying the winning.  Cougars a little less so, but they have lots of guys they're looking to trade if you go on Slack.

(14-16)  New Jersey Amer 29   39   38   25   -   131  (Terry Dischinger 21)
Evenly matched teams go head to head but it's the home-town Americans that roll in the end. Late barrage made it look closer than it was as the Americans were led by Dischinger and Stackhouse.  Iverson was very efficient with 16 points in 18 minutes but he's still misunderstood. I guess Iverson is one of the most interesting characters, often villainised (is this a word, it should be...) by the media, hated then loved. OKC has a young core though and will back to fight another day. What will happen with Griffin? NBA hasn't decided whether he'll make a glorious return next year or if he'll be villain status.

Honestly it's getting a bit more WWE like every year.  Do you think one day we'll get an announcement that the games aren't actually really games and that they have to admit it's entertainment and change the name to the NBE? I don't, I'm just being silly at the end of a long writeup.  Whilst I'm on silliness who actually thinks NCAA basketball has changed from being a great team game to isolation plays after waiting 20 seconds? At least when Suns used to play that way they didn't subject you to 20 seconds of nothing before trying to launch shots.  I'm not sure I agree with myself here either...

Oaks beat Squires! Nah, damn it the Squires remain atop the ABA with a solid away win over the hapless Oaks.  D'Angelo gets 21 - may see a bit more of that next year, but I don't think it will stop the media hating on the young man for now. Oaks went from 31 in the 1st to just 13 in the second and that was the main reason that the game wasn't closer at the end. Curry fouled out trying to mark Russell... there was that.

Finally we get to the last game which is good because I've seriously run out of juice here.  Lebron and the Nationals can't hold home court against the Magic. Lebron is currently the hero I think, but it's always hard to keep track.  Hey great game by Mark Aguirre who sure can score the rock - 37 today in 33 mins on just 21 shots is getting it done.  Good win for the Magic closing in on the Raps.

I'm done.
I'd drop the mic but I'm in education; it's a headset so it would look silly and my budget may not extend to replacing it.
Peace out.
