First up the Globies travel to Fort Wayne sitting at 19-20. The Pistons have given up the quest for .500 I believe and are settling in to a fairly miserable season and looking ahead to next year given Robert's recent call for future players in a trade. Good time for the Harlem outfit to drive in and steal one...
(20-20) Harlem Globetro 35 28 24 29 - 116 (Dana Barros 31)
(15-27) Fort Wayne Pist 23 25 38 25 - 111 (Artis Gilmore 17)
..and they do! Barros explodes for 31 points and top of the shots today with a huge 42.6 rating for the little point guard. Great to see Harlem battling back to .500 and ready to strike fear in to the hearts of the ABA who are always vulnerable to a non-top seed come playoff time!
Chaps at 19-21 and Pipers at 19-21 means that one of these two is going to get within a game of .500. Pipers are usually a playoff outfit and are perplexingly so-so this year. Texas was top of the pack in season 1, runner up in 2 and then drifted slowly out of contention, but a big win and a nicely upbeat season 6 has them thinking...
(19-22) Texas Chaparral 28 32 16 24 - 100 (Bill Sharman 33)
(20-21) Minnesota Piper 24 35 19 28 - 106 (Hakeem Olajuwon 20)
Sharman was giving Hakeem nightmares all game but the Pipers show some grit in the final quarter to hold on for a much needed home win and squeak closer to that magical .500 mark. Hakeem's 20 points weren't that pretty, but his 16 boards was the big difference - hugely entertaining battle of the boards with Elvin Hayes who also tallied 16 to go with his 10 points in the loss... Pipers can use this to move forwards?
Have you noticed the Warriors recently? It looked like Kwame was using Byron Scott as the head coach (just kidding Scott's on Trenton's roster of course) in order to secure a high draft pick a couple of week's ago, but a recent surge has seen them win 8 on the bounce - yes 8! Another upset win over the 22-19 Hornets would pull them within 1 of the magic number...
(22-20) Charlotte Horne 28 25 27 34 - 114 (Glen Rice 21)
(20-21) Golden State Wa 31 26 29 38 - 124 (Terry Porter 23)
Bingo! (or as the annoying commentator in Memphis insists on saying Bango!) as TP ignites the offence with 23 points and 9 dimes, Kemp and Dale Davis double-double (double double for double D!) and sting the Hornets. Glen Rice was firing away for his 21 points on the same number of shots but Rodman was collecting the boards (17) on his own. Warriors one under .500, Hornets just 2 above now...
Annoyingly the Bucks are nowhere near .500 - and they travel to the Gears who are 3 games over too... let's hope Chicago moves further away eh? We don't need to give Dirk and co any further lead on the NBA conference do we?? Lebron seems to have been quiet this year can he be the man to tame the bucks today?
(32- 9) Milwaukee Bucks 31 19 39 26 - 115 (Dirk Nowitzki 29)
(22-18) Chicago Gears 26 24 33 38 - 121 (Chris Mullin 27)
Dirk did his thing like he was supposed to do and Lebron only shot .33 for his 15 points but he did a little bit of everything else, actually that's an understatement as he dished out a whopping 17 assists, had 8 boards, 4 steals and an ugly 6 TOs, but it was the ultimate gym rat Chris Mullin who befuzzled the favoured Bucks and finished with 27 points on 10 of 16 shooting. Also chip in 14 points and 15 boards for big Ben and you get what was called for - Gears win! 52- 40 rebounding edge for the Gears as nobody beyond Russell (16) and Dirk (9) seemed interested...
Sounds at 20-21 you think have to have a pretty good shot at going .500 as they travel to St Louis looking for the leveller. St Louis is somewhat of an oddity stuck between tomorrow and today and led by the enigmatic Allen Iverson (more questions than the answer?). Big question is whether Ewing can lead Memphis to a playoff berth in the ABA - St Louis aren't making it this year...
(20-22) Memphis Sounds 13 34 26 28 - 101 (Benny Borgmann 28)
(10-31) St Louis Spirit 24 26 33 28 - 111 (Allen Iverson 23)
Iverson with an unusual double-double in the upset win for St Louis - 23 efficient points in one regard with 5 steals, 6 rebounds and 5 assists, but a ridiculous 10 turnovers yet the Spirits win?! Calvin Murphy was the real reason with his steamer of a game 23 points like Iverson but on just 14 shots with 11 assists and 3 steams (and just one turnover). In answer to the first question Ewing laid an egg and doomed the Sounds. 9 points, 4 rebounds and a half-dozen fouls managing just 18 minutes. Benny Borgmann was off the charts good in his 21 minutes scoring 28 points in 16 shots. Spirits aren't getting to .500 and Sounds are now 2 games under and need a bounce back game...
It would be great if the Braves could get back to .500 as they face a tough Sonics outfit that's been a bit hit and miss recently. Braves are 19-20 with the homecourt advantage and James Harden gets to face the team that drafted him with a chance for revenge... (let's hope he gets it eh?)...
(27-14) Seattle Superso 35 30 23 35 - 123 (Kevin Garnett 28)
(19-21) Buffalo Braves 31 35 21 24 - 111 (James Harden 24)
Yeah but nah as we say in NZ - it's a good away win for the Seattle outfit as KG, Rondo, Bird and Boozer all get double-doubles leading to a huge +14 on the boards for the Sonics. Harden kept it close wiht a big game of 24 points, 9 assists and 9 rebounds whilst outplaying Clyde Drexler - but it was KG that stole the show and the game for the Sonics who are playoff bound again. Do the Braves want to get back to .500 and compete? They'll need a bounce-back game too...
Washington is way over .500 and Savoy way below so this next game doesn't fit with my story at all and I'm a bit disappointed about that. Most people it seems love to bash on those Gens and hope they lose - maybe one team will shoot 50% and then I can get a link in there...
Jimmy Butler, Andre Drummond, Dutch Dehnert... all shoot .500 which team won?
(28-14) Washington Gene 25 22 28 34 - 109 (George Gervin 21)
(12-29) Savoy Big Five 20 15 18 34 - 87 (Alex English 20)
No upset in Savoy - 22 point win on the road for the visiting Generals - big double doubles by Moses and Drummond as an impressive front line with Durant and Gervin scoring at will. Alex English (on the trade block again??) chips in 20 and 9 for the losing Big Five.
Both the Nets and the home-town BlackHawks sit just over .500 - Nets at 23-18 and Tri Cities at 22-19 - of course if the Hawks can protect home court they'll be sitting on the same record of 23-19 and there's some sort of .500 in there too I'm sure! Question is can big George Mikan move the Tri-Cities up in the standings and be a difference maker this year? Today would be a good start...
(23-19) New Jersey Nets 20 29 26 26 - 101 (Corey Maggette 24)
(23-19) Tri-Cities Blac 39 25 28 32 - 124 (George Mikan 30)
Yes he can! Mikan goes 30 points in less minutes shooting a blistering 13-16 from the field whilst blocking 3 shots in the process... in fact the 'hawks shoot an impressive 56% from the field and have a plus 21 on the boards to squish the Nets. Dikembe hit .500 from the field and scored 17 points to go wiht his 12 boards, but no other Net helped out much, Spaghetti did flip in 23 points though. Blackhawks want that playoff spot... Nets do too so it should be a good fight out in the NBA!
Scranton was dawdling around the .500 mark but have looked much better since getting Dr J back (coincidence that the Pistons have looked much worse?). Today they travel to the disappointing Indians who looked better for a while (themselves at .500) and then dropped away again losing their last 5 games to drop off the pace. Question is does the trend continue with Scranton in good form and the Indians out of sorts? Will Dr J be the difference maker?? Can the Indians grab a rebound??
(25-16) Scranton Miners 30 34 29 39 - 132 (Dale Ellis 30)
(17-24) Brooklyn Indian 27 37 21 29 - 114 (Andrew Gaze 26)
Dale Ellis was dialled in! Best 3 point shooter in the league goes 4-7 from downtown, 30 points in 24 minutes on 17 shots is getting it done. Big story though was the battle of the boards which wasn't close to being close. Plus 28 for the Miners with Lucas, Gallatin and Erving all with double-digits (and double-doubles) as they cruise to the win over the hapless Indians. Gaze did put in a decent showing on the Indians and they did notch 10 more assists (34) than their oponents but the second half was all Scranton and the trend continues for both...
PS the answer to the last posed question was 'barely'
