It's day 75 in the UBAS and I'm still a bit grumpy about being smacked down in New York by the pre-ordained champions of season 5 Hawaii Chiefs (they should trade for Parish for the novelty value if nothing else). Anyway, today was a game that starts with a 1pt encounter but after that... well you'll see...
Injuries
Alvin Robertson 6 - this may hurt the Generals as Alvin is a starter and plays heavy minutes...
Arvydas Sabonis 4 - you'll definitely miss EuroWilt...
Fred Brown 3 - Downtown down...
Wilt Chamberlain - 82 - nah, only messing with you Greg ;)
(21-18) New Orleans Hor 25 24 29 43 - 121 (Chris Bosh 21)
(14-24) Harlem Globetro 30 36 28 28 - 122 (Michael Finley 22)
Harlem have caused no end of strife for Kik the younger this season as they've been inconsistent at best in the first half of the season... wait, we're approaching the mid-way point already? Damn that happened fast eh? Harlem had this in the bag after three quarters witha comfy 16 point lead, but when you're not playing very well any lead isn't that comfy and the Hornets came surging back behind the alien attack of Chris Bosh and even pulled ahead on his put back in the waning seconds. Good news for the hometown fans was that Rudy T proved he still has some value in this league and drains the driving mid-range as the buzzer expired. Harlem wins and will be very happy to do so, but where to from here Harlem? The Hornets would have loved to steal this road game to keep in touch with the big boys in the NBA but it was an opportunity lost in the end. Even if the Hornets miss out on the playoffs this year, they've got a good nucleus of youg studs moving forwards...
(22-16) Washington Gene 29 24 25 34 - 112 (Kevin Durant 23)
(25-14) Akron Firestone 13 33 21 23 - 90 (Wilt Chamberlain 44)
Wilt completely dominates with 44 points and a league season high 24 rebounds including 10 on the offensive end. Highest UBA rating this year of 55. End result? Firestones lose. Yes, really, when you start with 13 first quarter points it's always an uphill battle, but the generals blew that lead in the 2nd only to dominate in the fourth and give the Firestones a fair whipping on their own court. Greg's not going to be happy with this one... my bet is that Dantley and his 10 points in 40 minutes will be looking for a new home before the trade deadline hits. Washington are extatic as they seem to be finding their groove recently... signs of life in the ABA?
(21-17) Flint Tropics 30 34 27 30 - 121 (Demarcus Cousins 20)
(26-13) Hawaii Chiefs 33 33 44 36 - 146 (Bob Pettit 27)
Life? Life?? When you have the yet to be crowned champions in your division you should get some respect right? After bouncing the too-soon crowned Knicks by 20 in MSG (not to be confused with the food additive) the Chiefs back it up by putting the upstart Tropics to the sword with a 25 point smackdown courtesy of a huge game by Bob Pettit (again) - in fact the game they beat the Knicks three of their guys when 30+ UBA rating - that don't happen often! Not so today as nobody needed to play that many minutes in the smackdown. Flint again can't seem to make up their mind how good they're going to be... Does it all hinge on Boogie?
(16-23) Anderson Packer 32 28 20 38 - 118 (Gilbert Arenas 30)
(15-22) Fort Wayne Pist 23 30 32 23 - 108 (Kareem AbdulJabbar 30)
The Pack and the Pistons have been both a bit disappointing this year but you have to credit both of these coaches for being amongst the bravest in the league. Dave describes himself as the red-headed step-kid of the league for the way he gets set upon but I think he's a great UBAS manager (not just 'cos he traded me Wilt back in the day either) as he won't just sit around with a mediocre team. Sure it may not work out, but sooner or late maybe it clicks in Anderson... like today. I like Robert and his Pistons too, another great GM and a good battle today as Arenas goes nuts in the fourth quarter and blows a close game open with his perimeter attack. Don't feel too sorry for Jabbar, he's going to be around a long long time and will have lots more opportunities. Trivia for today's matchup is that these are the teams that selected 1st and 2nd in the original draft with Robert selecting Kareem and Dave Wilt. Can't really fault either selection, but interesting that no-one ever seems to move Kareem. You also need to note that in the UBAS Wilt is a great great player but not the force he was back in the old days of the UBAL when he was averaging 50 and 25 or something crazy like that. A number one selection of Kareem made good sense with UBAS normalisation... anyway, I'm drifting...
(17-22) Trenton Tigers 26 14 22 18 - 80 (Pete Maravich 16)
(26-12) Seattle Superso 37 26 35 29 - 127 (Nate Thurmond 24)
Shizzle that's a schmacckkdowwnn! I seem to like the word smackdown today but thought it needed a few more characters when the margin of vicotry was a whopping 47 points. Ouchie ouch that's really going to hurt and Jim won't like it one bit. Trenton in their defense were without Elgin Baylor who is by far their best player, but this thwapping matches the largest margin of victory this season. Let's not forget that many of us pegged Seattle as the favourites at the start of this season with Larry Legend teaming up with KG, Rondo, Beardie and Nate Thurmond. They're really going to be a handful wherever they land and I think it will take a special team to beat them 4 times in a series this year. Who doesn't like Pistol Pete though eh? Greatest college scorer of all time and most likely always will be...
(20-18) New York Rens 30 33 34 38 - 135 (George Gervin 35)
( 8-32) Kansas City Ste 34 22 34 24 - 114 (James Worthy 21)
Fortunately for Stan a win over the Steers on the road... if not I'm sure he would have dispaired at the way his squad is so loaded and yet isn't getting it done so far. Good news for the Rens is that they've actually stockpiled the best talent in the entire league... now if they can only find a way to get them to play together it will be awesome. Mark's Steers are not built for now and he knows that, but I like him still reaching out for great guys like Worthy who does his best today in a lopsided defeat. Best player on KC is probably Buddy Jeanette who has a rating of something like 28 this year so far - yeah you read that right... but all about the Ice Man today... 35 points on 22 shots is sweet.
(20-19) Chicago Crusade 21 39 32 26 - 118 (Richard Jefferson 31)
(24-16) Scranton Miners 29 32 30 44 - 135 (Artis Gilmore 28)
The Crusaders right now resemble a MASH unit with Sabonis joining Naulls, Wooden and Sablotsizdski (yeah I couldn't be bothered to look up the proper spelling) and that's going to make any game difficult and especially on the road against the second best team in the ABA right now Scranton. Gilmore shined today but you've got to love the frontline of Gilmore, Dr J, Lucas, Roundfield and Cornbread - plenty of beef up front for the Miners but they may still be lacking the guard play to oust Hawaii... dominant win today though :)
(18-22) Oshkosh All Sta 31 31 29 38 - 129 (Clyde Lovellette 24)
(15-23) Buffalo Braves 10 28 30 24 - 92 (Clyde Drexler 14)
Oshkosh bullies the Braves in a very lopsided first quarter where the Braves manage to tie for the lowest points in a quarter this season as they scrape together just 10 points. Sandbag Lovellette took it to the Braves all game long and they looked a bit lost as Payton abused their guards. Quiet game for Steph Curry and nobody there to pick up the slack... Clyde put in 14 but took 19 shots to get there... 37 point loss on your home floor to a team under .500 really stings... changes coming in Buffalo before the deadline??
(29-11) New York Knicks 45 43 26 27 - 141 (George Mikan 28)
(19-20) Golden State Wa 22 33 36 32 - 123 (Blake Griffin 27)
Two teams ranked 15th and 20th in scoring decided to put that aside and go for a big score today as a race meet was announced from the opening tip. Fortunately for the Knicks they were fastest out the gate posting a 45 point first and a 43 second for the most points in a half this season so far. That put the Warriors in a 33 point hole they would never be able to fully climb out of. Mikan scored the points and Jerry did everything else for the Knicks who took out their frustrations from their previous showing (and slow start) out on the Warriors to send them back below .500 again. Blake Griffin has proved he is a scorer in this league, but his rebounding and defense maybe the deciding factor as to whether he breaks through to the elite level... once he gets over his real-life injury of course...
