Welcome to the UBAS day 61. My team's been doing okay and started the day number 1 in the standings in the NBA conference and league which is pretty cool - playing a tough away game today and it's real close at the top so will we still be there at the end of the day?
What about your team? How they going eh?
Injuries?
Dave Cowens 7 Ouch 7 for big Dave
Neil Johnston 1 ... only 1 for Neil, but a painful one for his team :(
(14-18) Philadelphia Sp 28 31 15 30 - 104 (Leroy Edwards 23)
(19-12) Flint Tropics 29 29 33 40 - 131 (Demarcus Cousins 18)
Tropics have decided that they willl be a good team after all. Solid outing today as the visitors from Philly get a thorough spanking. DmC (not the run kind) did his damage and a huge second half put the game into blowout category early.
(20-11) Seattle Superso 30 22 28 23 - 103 (James Harden 25)
(16-15) Denver Rockets 30 23 26 20 - 99 (Michael Jordan 26)
Seattle gets an impressive road win thanks to the day in day out heroics of James Harden. Have to ask Shaun did you know how good Harden was going to be when you drafted him or was it one of those speculative 'he could be good' types? Right now Harden is the best shooting guard in the NBA - he even plays the odd bit of defense now and again this year. He's no MJ for sure, but good enough to upset his Airness and come away with a great win.
(23- 9) New York Knicks 33 24 32 24 - 113 (Shawn Marion 25)
(20-12) Milwaukee Bucks 33 30 29 22 - 114 (Dirk Nowitzki 29)
Both Bucks and Knicks enter this one on win streaks - 5 for the Knicks and 6 for the Bucks and one of those was bound to end. Unfortunately for this scribe my Knicks fell short by the smallest of margins. Great battle in Milwaukee with two heavyweights - it was fun for me to see Shawn Marion in one of his step up games trying to hold down Dirk but Nowitzki is an offensive machine and even Marion's heroics couldn't hold him back. Few players out for this one too - Knicks missing starting PG Baron Davis and yet to play Jones, and Bucks still without Price, Peja and Taylor - didn't stop the action. In fact everything was set up for a Jerry West game winner but 2-11 for the Logo to that point didn't make it likely - sure enough the would be winner rolled around and dropped harmlessly out of bounds as time expired. Tough loss for the Knicks and a quality notch for the romping Bucks. Yup we're no longer the number one team - the Bullets have it back again - hopefully we can regroup :)
(23- 9) LA Lakers 40 31 23 23 - 117 (Tim Duncan 30)
(17-14) Washington Gene 31 22 32 21 - 106 (Serge Ibaka 27)
Unfortunately the Lakers got an early jump on the Generals and never let them fight back into the game from that point on. Turned out to be a comfy 11 point margin in the end. 30 for Duncan, but his running pal David Robinson was the man today and best player on any court. Generals have a tough run of quality NBA conference teams on the bounce and haven't yet been able to get the W - keep trying Ty.
(11-22) Original Celtic 29 29 29 24 - 111 (Carmelo Anthony 18)
(16-15) New York Rens 33 41 28 35 - 137 (George Gervin 20)
Rens still for some obscure reason are toying with the ABA and just sneak above .500 again. I see more trades coming and quick if the Rens don't turn it around soon - good news for Rens is that they have as much worth in their roster as ANY other team in this league - they've just not quite found the right mix yet.
(13-18) Buffalo Braves 27 37 31 26 - 121 (Paul Pierce 22)
(18-14) Chicago Crusade 25 40 43 31 - 139 (Richard Jefferson 28)
Chicago are still motoring in the ABA and building a reasonable record to boot. I don't like Paul Pierce - he's a dick so I always seem to find myself rooting against him. I traded for him twice in one season in the UBAL just so I could enjoy telling him to pack his bags again as I traded him away without letting him settle in :) Sorry, that wasn't the game was it - oh yeah, duel between Jefferson and Pierce - all Jefferson winning battle and war today :)
( 7-24) Atlanta Hawks 23 38 25 27 - 113 (Willis Reed 21)
(18-14) Cincinnati Roya 42 38 26 28 - 134 (Corey Maggette 23)
I thought this was a misprint looking at the Royals at only 4 games over .500 - they're a better team than that and (not unlike Milwaukee) will be better as the season goes on and pushing the top teams by the end of the year. Magic lives here and he's a difference maker. Funny thing that Jim and I agree on is that Magic is our favourite player and neither of us would trade him even it made our team better (I have Magic in the UBAL). Atlanta weren't in this one after a smashing early on.
(11-21) Texas Chaparral 36 30 32 19 - 117 (Reggie Miller 24)
(12-20) Anderson Packer 29 31 31 32 - 123 (Gilbert Arenas 31)
Anderson have been better recently and they give the season 1 champs no respect. Gunners were firing with Arenas and Reggie going at it. Good duel until the fourth when Reggie went cold and that was that. Good win for the pack.
(20-12) Hawaii Chiefs 37 19 37 21 - 114 (Bob Pettit 35)
(17-15) New Orleans Hor 43 40 37 20 - 140 (Chris Webber 26)
A couple of quick losses for the Chiefs stings, but they're still sitting pretty in the ABA conference. I hear lots of ABA teams talking about how much closer the conferences are... I don't see it. It may be biased because of the conference I'm in - but seriously in my division alone there is the 23-8 Bullets, the 7 win streak Bucks, the Magic led Royals, the respectable Bobcats (over .500), of course my Knicks and the much weaker Atlanta Hawks. I would say that's 4 legitimate contenders (and 3 of the top 4 in the power rankings) - like I said earlier in the week though - no excuses! Oh yeah, the game? Smashing by the Hornets who are a very dangerous team with playoff hopes of their own - very good game by Bob Pettit was for nothing today as they were soundly beaten in New Orleans.
