UBAL Season 12 Day 61
Well I'm well and truly back off holiday mode now and enjoying being in the full swing of everything... well, mostly, there's work of course which is generally pretty good but I'm travelling a bit this week in country delivering training and meetings which can be a bit on the tiring side (one of those things that was fun when you're young!).
On to basketball. Like many of you I was shocked by the Paul George injury. It does concern me that (excusing the pun of course) we have a knee-jerk reaction to things like freak injuries. The baskets were too close or there's too many games or practises or you shouldn't be able to represent your country... it's funny but it seems when it comes to some sports we get things out of proportion. There's not really much greater an honour than representing your country in uniform of one type or another - I've been blessed as a so-so basketball player to play for both UK and NZ (armed forces only I hasten to add) and also coach NZ in an international series (okay, only against the Aussies and we were fairly well-beaten) but I still think it's a great honour and I was choked during every national anthem I've stood for. My wife Kim was a world-class gymnast in her day and likewise was very proud to represent not just herself but her country on the biggest stages. To think we should deny somebody that opportunity over something so trivial as money (yes, I said that) I find abhorrent.
Anyway, I'm off my high-horse so we can get down to the business in hand of silly sim games that we're all addicted to.

I still don't get the Celtics. Any team that can push a team like the mighty Rockets this close away should not have this futile a record. I know I've said it before but I think this team is deliberately trying to lose as many games as possible - only when fouls or blowout games should occur do the best lineups appear. I don't think they're a champion or even a playoff team but this is not the worst team in the league - where's the Boston Pride?
(21-11) Washington Wiza 31 28 32 23 - 114 (Neil Johnston 27)
(18-14) Pittsburgh Cond 29 26 15 33 - 103 (John Wall 20)
Plenty of pride in the capital and the Wizards take it with them on the road to hold off a Condors outfit that is looking like a playoff type team. Johnston was the star of the day and the best player on any court tonight.
(14-17) Kentucky Colone 37 27 40 25 - 129 (Dominique Wilkins 25)
(13-18) Detroit Pistons 27 32 34 30 - 123 (Rick Barry 37)
Rick Barry goes off for 37 and is third on the charts but it's all in vain as the Colonels of Kentucky finally show some fight to get back into their one-horse race (although ironically they are no longer in pole position). Kareem, Wilkins and a nice touch of Dampier were just enough to keep Barry from the win.
(21-11) Brooklyn Nets 31 36 31 25 - 123 (Michael Jordan 31)
(16-16) Philadelphia 76 35 24 36 16 - 111 (Bob McAdoo 27)
The Nets get the hard-earned road win thanks to a massive defensive effort in the third quarter holding the 76ers to just 5 field goals (16 points) in the fourth quarter. Six steals by MJ and Pierce in the second half (4 in the final ten minutes) were the difference as Philly's guards struggled down the stretch.

( 8-23) Miami Floridian 32 25 38 19 - 114 (Charlie Scott 26)
The Fliridians nearly manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory with a late collapse in the fourth that gave the Trailblazers hope, but alas it wasn't to be. Both teams were really friendly throughout in trying to let the other side win, but one of the teams had to notch their 8th win so it was fitting it went to the home town team - nice for Miami to have something to cheer about after the disappointment of losing Lebron (although they did a pretty good job of reloading given the size of hole left behind).
(16-16) Denver Nuggets 23 35 27 28 - 113 (Keith VanHorn 23)
(22- 9) Chicago Bulls 37 32 29 34 - 132 (Dirk Nowitzki 30)
Man the Bulls have come out of nowhere this season. 22-9 is a stellar record held by only a few great clubs and Dirker and his Bulls (sounds like a great movie title) deserve to be there. The Nugs drop to .500 on the back of this one.

(25- 7) Baltimore Claws 23 24 26 18 - 91 (Ron Harper 18)
Big matchup between ABA leading Claws and the NBA top four team Magic was close until the fourth when the usually high-scoring Claws couldn't find the bucket. On the positive side of things it's better for parity in the ABA with a few of us going down last night in games we should have won - glad you can join us Danno - at least you lost to a good team!
(17-16) Harlem Rens 30 23 27 25 - 105 (Larry Foust 15)
( 4-27) Dallas Chaparra 29 30 28 27 - 114 (Dale Ellis 15)
Chaps win! Chaps win! Suddenly with this win 'streak' the Chaps are no longer about to be broken up. Bad loss for the Rens and .500 is looming again. Wilt is a great defender this season and an occasional offensive star, is his supporting cast being exposed this year?
(14-17) Oklahoma City T 28 27 29 34 - 118 (Blake Griffin 23)
(18-14) Oakland Oaks 36 30 35 30 - 131 (Reggie Miller 24)
Coach Morris likes 131 points on the board and will certainly take the W to move four games above .500. Reggie Miller had 24 points in three quarters before fouling out and the team shot 54% to ease to the victory. OKC was led by Jerry Lucas and Blake Griffin, but not enough to stop them dropping to three games under.
