The first game of the post-season had some pretty big shocks in it and none bigger than overwhelming favourites Houston failing to defend in game 1… couldn't happen in game 2 as well… could it?
Injuries ouch, plenty of players out for a few games or more, none bigger than losing Elgin Baylor for 2… and Walt Frazier likely for the whole playoffs?
Ray Allen 8
Elgin Baylor 2
Corey Maggette 9
Walt Frazier 15
( 2- 0) Philadelphia 76 35 31 33 37 - 136 (Kevin Martin 33)
( 0- 2) Houston Rockets 32 27 30 33 - 122 (Kenny Sears 32)
Say it ain't so Commish? After building the three-prating Rockets to a level of almost total domination of the league they go 0-2 into the playoffs and are dominated in front of a stunned Houston crows by the 76ers.
Kenny Sears isn't the usual top man for the Rockets, normally there's Robinson and Malone and Drexler etc etc… where are they? Have they seriously underestimated their first round opponents?
Kevin Martin for 33… oh my! I still think Houston will win the series but those other teams in the NBA are probably hoping I'm wrong...
( 1- 1) Detroit Pistons 32 23 26 26 - 107 (Bob Feerick 23)
( 1- 1) Syracuse Nation 28 24 26 38 - 116 (LeBron James 25)
This series is likely to go 7 I say - LBJ and the Nationals strike back against hot shooting Feerick and the Detroit Pistons. The game was close throughout until a spurt in the last two minutes sealed it for the Nationals and the crowd breathed a collective sigh of relief.
( 1- 1) New Orleans Jaz 22 24 26 37 - 109 (Sidney Moncrief 22)
( 1- 1) Washington Wiza 24 23 35 36 - 118 (Antonio McDyess 26)
The Wizards quickly right the ship, but this is another series that's hard to call and could easily go 7. Sidney Moncrief is a great UBA player but MxDyess and the Wizards have just enough int he tank today to get by. Interesting game 3.
( 1- 1) Orlando Magic 38 27 29 28 - 122 (Grant Hill 27)
( 1- 1) Cleveland Caval 26 27 24 32 - 109 (Chauncey Billups 25)
Not wanting to be out-done in the NBA conference the Magic enjoy the underdog role and paste the Cavs in Cleveland in front of another stunned home crowd. Man every series in the NBA could go 7 (if Houston can find their stroke of course!).
Speaking of UBA studs Grant Hill absolutely is - top man in the game today.
( 0- 2) Indiana Pacers 37 30 20 28 - 115 (Chris Bosh 24)
( 2- 0) Utah Stars 34 43 33 25 - 135 (Larry Bird 29)
Magic and Larry click today and the Stars run away with the game behind 77 first half points. Bosh was strong in defeat for the Pacers who look to regroup at home. The way they finished the season made the Stars take note and we expect a tough outing in game 3.
( 1- 1) San Antonio Spu 18 31 24 33 - 106 (Russell Westbrook 21)
( 1- 1) Virginia Squire 25 35 21 35 - 116 (Alex Groza 30)
The Squires come out hard and fast in the first quarter to bite back against the upstart Spurs. Spurs last year were dreadful, this year they are a difficult out for anyone and the Squires will have their hands full all series in a likely 6 or 7 gamer. Alex Groza is the best player on the floor on all courts tonight with his 30 points and 12 boards in his normal efficient mode.
( 1- 1) San Diego Qs 30 20 18 43 - 111 (Kobe Bryant 28)
( 1- 1) Kentucky Colone 34 33 23 29 - 119 (Joe Fulks 36)
Qs look to steal a 2-0 lead over the Colonels and Kobe continues to fire (who wouldn't if you'd just signed an extra $48.5 million for 2 years at age 35 whilst recovering from major surgery). This time, however the game was easily in hand as Fulks was scoring at will for the hometown faithful. Kentucky were cruising… until about 5 minutes to go when suddenly the whole of the Qs squad caught fire and rolled off 14 straight points (10 by Kobe) to close the game to within 5. The Colonels responded with just enough to win the game… course that sort of comeback attempt can worry you going into the next game… especially when you're going to be on the road… another potential 7 game series? I think probably not, but it will be a good battle… how big will the loss of Elgin Baylor be?
( 0- 2) Dallas Chaparra 29 36 22 29 - 116 (Gary Payton 32)
( 2- 0) Oakland Oaks 28 42 32 22 - 124 (Kevin McHale 19)
Finally the Oaks do what they do best and protect home court against the mightily dangerous Dallas Chaps. Dallas remind me of the Mavs in the NBA - they can look very ordinary or they can look virtually unbeatable. The Chaps always have injury woes, that may be their undoing this year again as both Frazier and Maggette go down. Oakland play their very own brand of basketball and very effective it is too… Dallas need some home cooking and to find an answer in game 3 - odds on that answer is called Jerry West. The Glove was good for 32 today though...
