UBAS Day 111 – in New Zealand 111 is the phone number
you call in an emergency – in USA it’s 911 of course and the UK it’s 999. You’d think it would be the same everywhere
as it would make a bit of sense, but no – it really does pay to know where you
are in an emergency!
Did your UBAL
team just dial 111?
Injuries
Emeka Okafor
2 – at least the ambulance service wasn’t too busy today – just Okafor down for
a couple with a sprained right nostril that prevented him from breathing
in-between plays.
(21-35) Indiana Pacers 21
35 16 21 - 93
(Paul George 15)
(36-21) Kentucky Colone 35 30
24 33 -
122 (Joe Fulks 29)
Kentucky may have lost
the top spot in the ABA for now but they are absolutely kings of their division
and put a 30 point beat-down on the rebuilding Pacers. Jumpin’ Joe Fulks hits for 29 and a top 5
performance on the day. Kentucky only
sit a couple of games back of Utah for the overall number 1 spot in the ABA –
tied with Viriginia – expect the outcome of the ABA top seed to remain in
question until the last week of the season!
(25-32) Miami Floridian 23 25
37 29 -
114 (Charlie Scott 32)
(38-18) Syracuse Nation 35 35
19 27 -
116 (Sam Cassell 32)
Miami have caused a
couple of upsets recently finding some form behind Hakeem Olajawon and today
they nearly had the Nationals beat with a similar late surge. Olajawon fouled out in the fourth but Okafor
picked up the slack by owning the glass in the second half (all 14 of his
rebounds in the second half) before injuring himself in the final minute after
tipping back a miss to give the Floridians one more go. Charlie Scott hit his 32nd point
to tie the game up with 10 seconds left.
That was all Cassell needed as he drove hard stopped and popped sinking
the fifteen footer for the home win – crowd loves it… No.7 hotshots for Sam I
am.
(41-17) New Orleans Jaz 27 36
29 20 -
112 (Patrick Ewing 25)
(12-45) Phoenix Suns 27
22 27 25
- 101 (Brad Daugherty 23)
The Jazz are still in
tune (isn’t that a misnomer of sorts?) and take down the lowly Suns in
Phoenix. Patrick Ewing did the majority
of the damage with 25 and 11 as Doc Rivers steered the offense.
(19-39) Oklahoma City T 27 25
25 32 -
109 (Andrei Kirilenko 21)
(20-37) Denver Nuggets 27
25 32 26 - 110
(Joe Barry Carroll 19)
Two teams without much
to shout about all year stood toe-to-toe in a great encounter in Denver. 456
lead changes (okay 20 if you want accuracy in your sports reporting) and
neither team was able to get more than 7 points of separation all game. No big stars with massive performances but a
gutsy fight down to the wire. Charles
Oakley put the Nugs up by one on a rebound and put back and then JBC short J
gave the Nuggets a three point cushion with less than a minute to go. AK47 made an awkward looking drive look easy
to bring the game within one, but neither team was able to score any more and
the home town team held on for their 20th win of the season.
(29-29) Toronto Raptors 38 25
26 34 -
123 (Kevin Durant 27)
(33-26) San Antonio Spu 30 32
23 26 -
111 (Brook Lopez 25)
The ABA is a 9 horse
race and not a huge amount separates top to bottom; so games like this against
the Raptors are really important for the currently in-playoff Spurs. This was not what was ordered and the usually
supportive home fans were all over their team for the soft fourth quarter
performance. Durantula put on a show for
the few visiting fans from Toronto with some impossible makes down the stretch. The Spurs lived on the steady but unexciting
diet of Lopez but it wasn’t enough in the 4th.
(12-44) Carbondale Aces 32 35
28 21 11
- 127 (Larry Hughes 26)
(24-34) St Louis Spirit 29 20
35 32 12
- 128 (Sidney Wicks 34)
Non-playoff bound teams
again prove the show is still there as the Spirits and Aces battle over five
quarters! This game may look close at
the end but at one point it was anything but – in fact the Aces led by as many
as 28 after a dominant first half but after the 22nd minute they
just couldn’t find a way to stop Sidney Wicks (4th on the tops list)
or Larry Johnson (2nd) who combined for a whopping 66 points. LJ was responsible for the game tying
three-point play and also the go ahead shot in OT. Great to see from grandmamma J
(28-28) Pittsburgh Cond 39 31
28 21 -
119 (Paul Pierce 32)
(31-27) Carolina Cougar 33 21
21 25 -
100 (Moses Malone 16)
Cougars also wanted the
win to solidify their playoff hopes in the ABA but the Condors came with a
different mindset. Their target was .500
by the end of the night and they achieve it giving Carolina a pretty good
kicking in the process. Condors may not
make the playoffs but they will give it a go from here and if they don’t –
they’ll play a decent spoiler team. Nice
game by Paul Pierce – but I still think he’s
a dick.
(40-17) Washington Wiza 22 24
20 32 -
98 (Steve Nash 18)
(38-19) Utah Stars 27
26 26 33
- 112 (Larry Bird 25)
Big matchup in Utah – a
Larry-less Stars edged out the Wizards in Washington earlier in the week so the
Wizards had revenge on their minds.. but Larry wasn’t about to let it
happen. Traded to the Stars in a
blockbuster at deadline for John Havlicek, Larry and Magic have instantly
formed a deadly duo whose games are able to work together (at least
sometimes!). Hot shots tonight found
neither of them though, as Derrick Coleman continues to ward off Pau Gasol for
the starting spot alongside Tim Duncan.
Magic, Bird and Duncan – I love that, even at the twilight of their
careers it’s fun to see greats together.
Nash has ignited the Wizards this year and he double-doubles as usual
but McDyess was hounded by Bird and his so-so output was the difference today. Wizards have 40 wins though – they’ll bounce
back and get the next one.
(26-30) Brooklyn Nets 31
35 37 34
- 137 (Shaquille O'Neal 42)
(40-18) Detroit Pistons 27 23
48 28 -
126 (Andrew Bynum 29)
You don’t go into
Detroit and come out with a W unless you’re a top tier team on a good game or…
Brooklyn Nets with a motivated Diesel engine!
42 dominant points for Shaq daddy as he and Bynum go at each other in
the centre spot. 42 points for Shaq on a
super efficient 16 of 18 field goal attempts and even 10 of 14 from the charity
stripe. These are the sort of games that
you shake your head at if you’re the Pistons and you love if you’re an
impartial observer – the favourite doesn’t always win in UBA and NBA – they just
win more often than not. Bynum and Hayes
both double-doubled and Stock had 20 and 14 dazzlers – but it was all Shaq all
night.
PS UBAS guys – Wilt is
coming to the Big Apple J
