Before we get to that I was involved in a game last week that went to four overtimes! We ended up losing by a point in by far the longest game I've ever played. Cunningly as the old player-coach I sat out the start of the fourth quarter and went in for the last three minutes of a tight game so that I could be fresh at the end! That kind of back-fired as we made no more subs through the four additional periods. Wouldn't have minded too much but I fouled the breakaway with 2.4 left on the clock and us trailing by one. Their guy missed BOTH the freethrows to set up a would-be furious finish again but we took the rebound and the horn sounded. Try as we might to explain there must be at least a second or two left on the clock the refs wouldn't have it and called the game - now that's harsh after four OTs!
As it's my first writeup I'll also say that my division (what are they called Adam? ABA West?) in the ABA is going to be the most exciting to watch this year. My Stars are going to be tough to beat with the best PG and PF of all-time on the same team (yes, that's how I rate Magic and Duncan), the Qs, the Chaps, the much improved Spurs and Oaks are all playoffs contenders and I wouldn't be surprised to see maybe 5 out of that division represent. Hopefully Utah Stars will come out on top; the accomplishment I've not yet reached in UBAS/L is 60 wins (59 twice!) so that would be nice but the goal is the playoffs first and foremost :)

Syracuse have a nice looking team this year with Oscar and the King. The Amigos are better too and generally a high scoring outfit to boot. Big O maybe aging but he's an all-time great and today he fills it up to the tone of 31 over Big Dog (always somewhat of a disappointment on the big stage). Good win for the home town Nationals as they move to 3-1 on what should be a winning season for them.

The Pacers are sucking pretty bad in the early going. Given a healthy 33 point smackdown at the hands of the Wizards in Washington. Coincidentally TC leads all scorers in the game with the same number of points as the final differential so it would have been close if he didn't play (and someone missed all the shots he took of course :) Wizards should be over .500 this year too - don't think that's happening for Indy unless they start turning things around pretty soon.

The Chaps hand the Jazz their first loss of the season behind the extraordinary talents of the logo Jerry West. Nobody voted for West as their favourite of all time in Stan's recent survey - although I did vote for him, I honestly slipped him as number 2 behind Magic as my all-time fave (great to have your favourite player on your team!). The Jazz have made a great start to the season but the Chaps are a dangerous team, both of these are +.500 teams and the Jazz will have to be contended with in the ABA.

The early season favourites look to be the old Kentucky Colonels. Jeff's team haven't won it all since... well, it was a while ago but this is their best outfit in a few years and Kareem would love to stick it back to the league with Nique his willing side-kick. Perfect 4-0 start is mirrored by the Spirits who are already bracing themselves for what looks like being a long season.

( 1- 3) New Jersey Amer 29 25 24 25 - 103 (David Lee 18)
The Spurs may end up being the most improved team this year (mostly because they stunk real bad last year). Lots of young talent together and they take apart the Americans on the road behind one of the those Lopez boys (the one that doesn't look like Sideshow Bob).

( 2- 2) Virginia Squire 23 19 31 27 - 100 (Larry Bird 27)
Nice win for the motor city Pistons over the powerhouse Squires. Virginia is definitely back and packing this year with a few less injury woes and Larry Legend is looking dangerous, but Detroit has a healthy Andrew Bynum (for this year at least) and Elvin Hayes to make an interesting big combo down low. A combined 40% shooting night meant lots of rebounds - 57 to the Pistons as Bynum, Hayes and even Rick Barry double-doubled. See a decent season ahead for both these teams.

The Oaks smoke the Aces. The Oaks have usually been a pretty strong outfit - figure to be a notch down this year but still a +.500 team and strong playoff contender I expect. Tonight wasn't close.

( 2- 2) Carolina Cougar 29 33 31 21 - 114 (Carmelo Anthony 25)
Melo against Anthony was a nice battle, Durant definitely won the battle with his 43 but Melo and the Cougars will take the win.

( 2- 2) Houston Rockets 31 26 33 20 - 110 (Karl Malone 23)
Statement win by the Trailblazers that they are for real this year - or maybe it's just early and Houston is taking it easy on us. The Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers are commish Adam Russels teams in UBAL and UBAS as I'm sure you all know. Rumour has it that he is so upset with Dwight Howard vacating his beloved Lakers in the NBA that he wants to change the name of the Houston franchise in the UBAL to the Melbourne Storm or was it Mystics? Regardless the Rockets are the backto back champs and anyone with title aspirations better be ready to beat them otherwise my Stars will have to do it in the Finals :) Today belongs to Sam Jones - 29 points, 3rd in hotshots and the go-ahead make to boot.
