It's not the first cruel scheduling issue this year, but having to write the 5th game of the playoffs this year when your team has been unceremoniously swept in 4 is harsh!
Oh well, I won't be alone after today's games (and if you're in the bottom half of the NBA conference you know this means trouble....)
Injuries
Philadelphia Sphas:
Terry Cummings 1 Abdominal Sprain - TC out for the Sphas but did he hang around long enough to get the W first and advance to round 2?
New York Rens:
Bob Davies 12 Knee Ligament Tear
Milwaukee Bucks:
Bill Bradley 4 Jaw Broken
Akron Firestones:
Jerry West 3 Lower Back Slipped Disc
( 3- 2) Washington Gene 16 18 37 36 - 107 (Dominique Wilkins 20)
( 2- 3) Harlem Globetro 33 25 16 23 - 97 (Chuck Chuckovits 26)
In a bizarre series of two of our most vocal GMs a further twist as the Globies and Generals revert to early season form - too much Chuck from Harlem and more offense from Nique for the Generals. The Generals now push the Harlem outfit onto the ropes after a first half when they looked awful followed by a second half of domination. The Generals now have a chance to close out Harlem at home in game 6... healthy squads hereon so the best team will win over the two game series (time to talk it up boys)... Vern was talked up as 6th man of year possible but didn't help the voting with his soft game today, they'll need more from him and some help for Hawkins or it's the Generals in round 2.
( 2- 3) Trenton Tigers 21 21 26 22 - 90 (Neil Johnston 27)
( 3- 2) Hawaii Chiefs 29 22 28 25 - 104 (Steve Francis 20)
Hawaii keeps the series going home court way and has a chance to close out in game 6 on the road against Trenton - won't be easy though and I think this one is going 7. Huge rebounding edge for the Chiefs today and that was the story...
( 2- 3) Denver Rockets 28 20 35 25 - 108 (Michael Jordan 26)
( 3- 2) LA Stars 32 29 37 37 - 135 (James Worthy 28)
The Rockets have been running the Stars hard in this one, but I can't help thinking the Stars suddenly have the series under control as another ABA series is as close as it possibly can be after 5 games. Easy Ed proves oh so valuable to the Stars with 22/13/7 picking up from Shaq to ensure this one was never close. Worthy proves he can run with Michael in scoring for today at least.
( 3- 2) Philadelphia Sp 20 33 24 34 - 111 (Jerry Lucas 27)
( 2- 3) New York Rens 33 23 34 25 - 115 (Alex Groza 25)
The first ABA close out game doesn't disappoint as the Rens don't dip out just yet and fight on to game 6. Groza has been a rock for the Rens all year and his efficient 25 and Chuck's double-double were the difference makers. The Sphas seemed out of it after a weak 3rd quarter but Lucas made a (star) war(s) of it with a range of difficult shots down the stretch to keep the NY crowd on the edge of their seats despite the home team leading from the tip and by double digits most of the game. Game 6 will be huge - I'm going with another 7 game thriller...
( 1- 4) Indianapolis Ka 30 17 23 27 - 97 (Leon Trimmingham 20)
( 4- 1) Milwaukee Bucks 28 23 30 28 - 109 (Andrei Kirilenko 20)
Who thought this series would last this long? I didn't and no disrespect to Indy - the Bucks are that good and will face the Lakers next in what may be a battle of the two best teams in the league. Weapons galore for the Milwaukee outfit and AK47 is the one of choice today. Miller shot badly, but there's enough muscle to pick it up and there's always a Bill or two in the centre to keep the opponents out the paint. Lakers/Bucks will be interesting - but I have the Bucks in 5 they are that good.
( 1- 4) Seattle Superso 20 36 35 21 - 112 (James Harden 25)
( 4- 1) Cincinnati Roya 31 29 37 27 - 124 (Lou Hudson 29)
The Sonics were ready for the Lakers but the Royals present a very different challenge. The first is a PG that plays all over the court in Magic Johnson - today he leads all players and is the main reason that the Royals area dangerous team. Hudson has been sweet all year and his scoring barage - mostly off Magic dimes kept the Sonics at arms length long enough for time to expire. Sonics can look happily to the future with such a core of promising players; particularly if James Harden continues to grow as a player. The Royals progress to round 2...
( 1- 4) Buffalo Braves 30 34 27 26 - 117 (John Drew 26)
( 4- 1) Akron Firestone 34 32 31 33 - 130 (George Mikan 25)
...Where they will face the Akron Firestones. Which series is harder to call Lakers/Bucks or Stones/Royals? This one I say, but first lets dispatch of the Braves from Buffalo. Old School Mikan has been a great pickup for the 'Stones but the fact they've dismantled the Braves without their leader is a tribute to the depth they have. Perhaps if they could have gone to 7 West would have been back for the Royals opener - but one thing's for sure, you never let an opponent back up if you can keep them down. Stokes deserves a mention in his final game (ever?) as he triple-doubles with 10 rebounds and 10 assists, but with Mikan, Okafor and Tiny controlling boards and rebounds this one was never in doubt.
As an observation the ABA has been a dog-fight in the first round and I think it will be in every round. There's literally nothing it seems between the top 8 teams and I think that will be true in the conference semis. The NBA has four exceptionally good teams (and then the rest of us). 1-4 and 2-3 all with ranking and you seriously and honestly wouldn't want to face any of those teams over 7 games so we're in for a great battle.
I would almost 100% guarantee that the winner will come out of the NBA - but I thought that season 1 and was painfully wrong...
Next time I put pen to paper it will be conference finals and that will be fun... good luck everyone!
