Day 36 of the UBAS Season 3; what trades have had the biggest effect so far this year? I ask as another trade has just been announced involving my Knicks and sending solid Paul Millsap to New Orleans in exchange for Derrick Coleman - this won't be the biggest of the year but will really help NO down the line and the Knicks next year and this. There was the great trade by the Generals to land Dwayne Wade that tops my list, but also the trade to bring big George Mikan to Akron must rate up there. The trades are slowing and the season is taking shape; there are clear playoff favourites, some good teams, some so-so and then there's the bad ones. Of course the trades will fire up again as we near the all-star break in the UBAS.
In entirely unrelated news my little boy turns 5 tomorrow and starts big-boy school. Man time flies doesn't it? My baby girl is only three years from college!!
Injuries
Alonzo Mourning 2 - and he will be missed
Chris Bosh 3 - and Bosh too, although maybe not as much...
Leroy Edwards 6
Benny Borgmann 1
(11- 7) New York Knicks 45 26 20 25 - 116 (Rudy Tomjanovich 22)
(10- 9) Charlotte Bobca 26 25 23 19 - 93 (Glen Rice 27)
The Knicks and Bobcats have been involved in a strange scheduling sequence that has seen them play each other four times in a row. The Bobcats shocked the Knicks in the first game at the Garden, but the Knicks hit back on the road the next game before taking one at home and then blowing out the Bobcats in the final meeting today. Two close and tough teams that may well both miss out on the playoffs (although the addition of Coleman should help the Knicks this year at both PF and C). Not quite sure how I landed Rudy T but I'm sure glad I did (just wait
till you see him next year) and today he's the only Knick to crack the
hotshots (offensive; number 10) and carried the Knicks to the win behind
a massive first quarter that the home town Cats could never seem to
recover from. Rice continues to show his offensive prowess in the league and chips in 27 today to pace Charlotte. Incidentally there are only two teams in the top 10 of toughness schedule with a winning record and both come from New York (the Knicks were 6th and the Rens 10th before today's games).
( 3-16) Wilkes-Barre Ba 37 34 17 28 - 116 (Jeff Hornacek 20)
(11- 8) Denver Rockets 39 29 33 28 - 129 (Michael Jordan 34)
Man I wish I could have Michael Jordan on my team and I'm envious of the Rockets for MJ alone. Seriously I loved seeing the 50th tribute to the guy who has had the biggest impact on the game in my lifespan. I was a kid of the Magic/Bird rivalry (the greatest competition I still believe) but MJ took the game and brought it to the next level. Not just his drive (Jerry West had that) but his whole persona was larger than the sport and he changed the way the game was played - not to mention the way he brought basketball to levels of popularity such that even in a small town in Britain kids were wearing Jordan gear. Today his Airness rips the Barons for 34 - 20 coming in the massive surge in the 3rd where Michael caught fire (three in a row on Jam?) and just coudn't be stopped. Horns was a good player and leads the Barons with 20 in the losing effort.
(10- 8) Anderson Packer 22 18 27 25 - 92 (Wilt Chamberlain 26)
(13- 6) Akron Firestone 29 21 30 25 - 105 (George Mikan 30)
The pack have definitely been on the road to recovery recently and were starting to get right back into the playoff picture, but in the ultra tough NBA conference you can't afford to get too far behind. Today Wilt put the team on his back but couldn't get the better of the old school version of himself in George Mikan. Both players in the hotshots but Mikan was better and his defense on the Dipper proved the difference in this one. Akron definitely looking like top half of the conference playoff material right now...
( 4-15) Atlanta Hawks 33 23 35 30 - 121 (Dirk Nowitzki 18)
(14- 4) Hawaii Chiefs 43 47 25 29 - 144 (Elton Brand 30)
Say what you like about how easy the schedule has been for Hawaii but there's an old adage that you can only beat the team that's in front of you and so far that's exactly what the Chiefs have been doing this year. Today Brand is the chief of the Chiefs as they put away a slightly soft Atlanta Hawks team with a decent 144 point outburst (90 points in the first half!). Dirker tried to shoot the Hawks into it but just too much to ask of the German ace.
( 8-11) New Orleans Hor 27 29 29 26 - 111 (Walt Bellamy 26)
(12- 7) Brooklyn Indian 30 33 30 35 - 128 (Brandon Jennings 21)
Brandon Jennings is having a pretty good year in the NBA and is certainly playing well for the young Indians too as they are able to overcome the Bellamy and his Hornets on their home court winning every quarter for a comfortable 17 point margin of victory. Coleman's last game as a Hornet was a 19 and 9 performance - and they will miss him this year with his versatile and efficient game but they realise the future holds more promise than right now. For those of you that don't know Mark just last week became a dad and brought baby Levi to the world - congrats Mark!
(10- 9) Buffalo Braves 26 23 26 31 - 106 (Vince Carter 36)
(16- 3) Milwaukee Bucks 27 34 26 37 - 124 (Amare Stoudemire 35)
The Braves looked better than a .500 team on paper but at 10-9 after a routine busting at the hands of the mighty Bucks pushes them very close to that mark. Carter has been a super stud so far this year and his 36 today leads all scorers, but speaking of studs Amare is just a point behind in a stellar offensive display as the Bucks cruise to victory. At 19 games in and less than a quarter way through we already have a clear title favourite (wish they weren't in my division though..) The trade that brought Blake Griffin to Buffalo hasn't quite worked in the early going, but Griffin is still very young and has a promising future ahead of him so it may be too early to judge.
( 8-12) Sheboygan Redsk 25 30 29 22 - 106 (LeBron James 26)
(10- 8) Harlem Globetro 27 34 33 36 - 130 (Joe Fulks 27)
The Globies enjoy home cooking and feast on the Redskins and their superstar Lebron James today. Fulks has been a revelation in Harlem and today he outduels the chosen one - that said if you're following the NBA right now you'll know that LBJ is cooking and Miami look ominously good...
I still love Hawkins and I may hold you to trading him back to me at the end of the year Dan!!
( 6-13) Golden State Wa 21 27 24 29 - 101 (Rony Seikaly 23)
(12- 6) New York Rens 31 33 25 33 - 122 (Scott Fisher 26)
The other New York team take on a Golden State team that has just not fired so far this year and give them a tasty little spanking winning all four quarters on their way to a 21 point beating. Fisher (no, not Derek) was the high man for NY with 26.
(10- 8) San Diego Sails 44 18 27 25 - 114 (Hakeem Olajuwon 25)
(10- 9) Carolina Cougar 38 25 18 29 - 110 (Kevin Love 17)
The Cougars have been a nice surprise this year whilst the Sails have been a little disappointing; today that was all out the window as the Dream put his stamp on the contest and the Sails upset the Cougars in Carolina to take away the game. It was a strange yo-you affair slipping backwards and forwards, but the Sails finish on 10-3 run to close out the entertaining game and get their 10th win of the year.
