Unlike BBJ this basketball writer is not at all bothered by Margarine, nor does he have the faintest interest in the Melbourne Cup (today I hear), AFL, NFL (or any FL for that matter), MLB, or any other sport with Major as the first part of its acronym. Jeez I may be the only New Zealander who isn't that enthused by rugby.. In fact I'm fairly linear as a basketball fan first and foremost. If I had to list my second favourite sport under duress it would be a toss up behind tennis and football (the real one with spherical balls that the world plays).
I like the college game, it's very interesting and I understand most of you are real passionate about that; I can understand that and would love to be a part of it but I can't get particularly emotional about it either having not grown up watching it and having no particular allegiance. I like to see the young players giving their all etc etc but I like the pros and always will I guess; it's what separates the men from the boys to me. Don't even start me on the WNBA...
None of which makes me a particularly good or bad person but I thought I'd share that quickly with you before today's games. You want to talk NBA? Yes, I'm your guy. Otherwise go to a bar and find someone who will gladly talk about anything :)
Injuries
Mitch Kupchak 7 (Quadricep Muscle Sprain)
Elmore Smith 3 (Lower Back Muscle Tendon Sprain)
Roy Hibbert 1 (League Suspension – inappropriate language at press conference - poor fuc$er)
James Harden 2 (Knee Ligament Sprain)
Wilt Chamberlain 1 (Thumb Ligament Sprain) - will this change a result for Harlem
Michael Adams 6 (Knee Ligament Sprain)
(35-17) INDIANA 26 31 33 26 - 116 (George Gervin 31)
(31-23) MEMPHIS 26 29 24 28 - 107 (Adrian Dantley 39)
Indy with another impressive outing over Memphis - Ice v AD was a great personal battle with Dantley winning the war but Gervin the battle. Some days this would be game of the day and AD's 39 would put him at number 1 hot shot.. but not today as he checked in at number 4.
(36-18) NEW ORLEANS 28 28 29 28 - 113 (Patrick Ewing 28)
(25-27) ROCHESTER 33 32 30 23 - 118 (Ralph Simpson 22)
Rochester claims a good scalp against the highly rated Jazz. Ewing is playing good ball right now but the Royals are still aiming for that .500 number and some basketball respectability. Simpson and Cousy provide the offense today and that was just enough in a good opening encounter.
(22-31) DETROIT 22 26 27 24 - 99 (Ricky Pierce 25)
(27-26) MINNESOTA 35 27 22 26 - 110 (Kenny Sears 27)
Minnesota shows that they're not quite finished yet and get their noses back above .500 with a solid win over the visiting Pistons. Kenny Seared-Chicken roasts Detroit for 27 in the process.
(21-34) WASHINGTON 25 30 13 30 - 98 (Jason Kidd 29)
(41-14) BOSTON 30 30 31 21 - 112 (Al Jefferson 28)
Boston are one of the top four teams this year and comfortably hold off Washington.
(29-26) ORLANDO 37 27 33 23 - 120 (Grant Hill 30)
(15-38) NEW YORK 22 36 18 23 - 99 (EddieA Johnson 16)
Orlando coach Jim Moore is happy with a real solid effort on the road against the Knicks, and loves Grant Hill's work; he just wants to see some of this game in and game out not every other game. Hill and Garnett were both on top of their game in this one. Eddie A top scores as usual for the home town Knicks.
(32-21) OAKLAND 31 31 20 20 - 102 (Dwight Howard 17)
(26-28) UTAH 22 31 44 32 - 129 (Vince Carter 30)
Upset of the day? Not quite, but Oakland have been motoring along quite nicely and quietly with one of the best records in the ABA. Today they ran in to a Utah squad that was hot for long enough to give them a fairly decent spanking behind a stellar performance from Vince Carter as he earns the top shot spot today. Something tells me that the return leg of this one won't be anywhere near as one-sided (in favour of the Stars at least). Howard used to be in the Stars you know? We traded him for Lebron and some useful supporting players... (rumour has it that was the last time Tony Morris made a trade;) Duncan has found his home in Utah and I would be amazed if he isn't there until he retires from the UBAL - top three defensive today and all UBAL defensive 1st this year.
(33-23) KENTUCKY 28 29 30 22 - 109 (Donnie Freeman 21)
(19-36) PORTLAND 27 25 24 34 - 110 (Sam Jones 22)
No, here's the shock upset and game of the day all wrapped neatly into a package in Portland. One point squeaker as the home town Blazers go nuts as Billy Ray Bates nails a long two at the buzzer. Coach Kik storms off as replays show that although the shot was off in time the clock was late in starting. "Shouldn't have counted!" was all he could manage before being heard blustering expletives in the tunnel. Down 11 at the start of the fourth it took a dynamic last minute surge to win the game as they never led by more than 2 points, but never gave up and get the classic win at home. Kentucky can't wait to have Nique back in three, Kentucky will be dangerous at full strength.
(17-39) NEW JERSEY 27 16 28 32 - 103 (Campy Russell 24)
(39-17) HARLEM 29 35 33 34 - 131 (Brian Taylor 20)
Wilt managed 33 minutes before his injury but by then the game was already in the bag. Too much firepower in Harlem for Jersey to handle and this game was never close. Check out Brian Taylor's game today?!! Michael Adams celebrated so hard he put out his knee and will miss the next half dozen (does anyone else wish the NBA could tell you how long a player was going to be out at the time of injury? I bet Steve Nash does...)
( 6-49) SAN ANTONIO 26 21 31 24 - 102 (Archie Clark 17)
(28-26) CAROLINA 35 27 31 22 - 115 (Ty Lawson 18)
'Ickle Ty Lawson provides the spark as Carolina rise two games over .500. San Antonio still suck worse than the Detroit Pistons in the NBA. Where's Tim Duncan when you need him? (No Shaun I have no intention of making that trade).
