UBAL Season 10 Day 81

I have to say that you never really appreciate what goes in to a job until you do it yourself.  I bet Adam knows all about that running all the games and being a commissioner etc now far more so than he knew before (when he probably thought he could do it better).  We also have plenty of dads (and a few grand-dads) in the league who know something about how much harder parenthood is than it seems from a distance.. where am I going with this?  Well, some of you know BBJ as that moody writer and basketball critic who's been known to throw a couple of wobblies and when he feels strongly about things he tends to vent.  Truth is though, the last season of UBAL and UBAS I've REALLY come to respect what he does with game reports.  I have, by comparison, the easy job of spitting these out twice a week and yet sometimes they are incredibly hard to get anything down at all - not to mention the time aspect.

BBJ and Adam; you guys rock..

..on to my waffle (and not the good kind with maple syrup)..

Injuries
Charles Barkley 3 (Knee Partial Ligament Tear)  - oooh Kik Jnr won't like this one...
Anfernee Hardaway 2 (Finger Tendon Sprain)

(26-15) OAKLAND 38 11 21 33 - 103 (Kevin McHale 28)
(22-18) ROCHESTER 27 32 23 31 - 113 (Pete Maravich 21)
Oakland has wobbled a little recently and they would have liked to right the ship against a solid Rochester outfit but they just didn't have enough in the tank and were undone by a hopeless second quarter with a futile 11 points.  McHale was scoring like he can but the pistol was loaded and ready with his retaliation, good for 21.  The real reason for the W though was the strong play of Bob Cousy and his 18 point 12 assist effort and Rich Jones 20 point 13 rebound 6 assist line.  Howard didn't help by fouling out in 28 minutes just when Oakland needed him to step up.

(30-13) HARLEM 22 36 25 22 - 105 (Wilt Chamberlain 22)
(21-20) MINNESOTA 30 14 35 22 - 101 (Deron Williams 36)
Harlem gets a really good away win over the .500 bound Minnesota team.  Wilt was pretty good, but Deron Williams has been on fire recently; today he hits the top shot charts with his 36 point outburst.  Still Harlem has plenty of weapons and depth with new boys Kemp and Odom doing the work alongside the dipper.

(16-25) VIRGINIA 20 27 19 17 - 83 (Ray Allen 16)
(30-13) BOSTON 26 28 24 27 - 105 (Dwyane Wade 22)
Boston Virigina is always a classic game.  Sorry, was except this year when Virginia is taking a sabatical and Boston is tough.  Dwyane Wade welcomes Ray Ray to Boston - hold on, have I got that right?

( 8-34) ST. LOUIS 18 36 27 32 - 113 (Mack Calvin 25)
(15-27) SEATTLE 40 29 27 31 - 127 (Blake Griffin 21)
Teams of the future?  Maybe, but not teams of the present (although St Louis is trying to battle to get to respectability and Seattle are hot and cold).  Blake has been good this year, maybe not great, but really solid and Seattle plans to build around him for the future.  Today his 21 points come off 90% shooting.. wow!

(29-14) SAN DIEGO 36 14 31 31 - 112 (Kobe Bryant 36)
(13-30) NEW JERSEY 30 25 28 34 - 117 (Kenny Anderson 25)
New Jersey picks up the big scalp at home and Kobe was properly psst off!  He fired away for 36/6/6 on an efficient shooting display but the rest of the team didn't want it bad enough.  Wilkins and Thurmond were fired up in the wrong way and were both T'd up in a furious finish to the game where Kenny and his 25 and 10 dimes took over down the stretch scoring or finding the open man.

(36- 6) HOUSTON 35 29 32 33 - 129 (John Stockton 31)
(23-18) BALTIMORE 23 30 36 32 - 121 (Allen Iverson 31)
Houston on the road against a good Baltimore squad?  Yeah it was close but Houston are the title favorites this year (yes, they are) and manage to keep the lead at almost double digits the whole game for another impressive display.  John Stockton with a rare top-score today, but don't think the little fella isn't as good as anyone else on this team; 31 points 19 assists - did you ever wonder why Malone looked so good?

(18-23) UTAH 36 28 37 30 - 131 (Detlef Schrempf 34)
(25-17) MEMPHIS 38 23 34 25 - 120 (Adrian Dantley 24)
Cha ching butta bing!  Maybe I should leave my writeup there as I haven't had the chance to write about that many Utah wins this season, but this was  a good one on the road against a high performing 60 win bound Memphis (I don't think they'll get there incidentally, but they'll certainly have a better record than my beloved Stars).  Schrempf is awesome this year 34 points on 13 of 17 from the field with 9 boards and 5 assists, yeah I'll take that.  Duncan has been a notch up on both Shaq and Hakeem for Utah - probably because he can slide in to that PF position where he truly plays.  Willie Wise was a quiet little pick up by Utah - next year he'll start and be a dangerous SF.  Memphis have AD as their main offensive weapon, but TMac shot very poorly against his former team.  Stars shot a ridiculous 57% in this one and a crazy 75% from down town with 15 trifectas.

(31-10) CLEVELAND 26 30 22 29 - 107 (Anfernee Hardaway 27)
(24-18) SYRACUSE 18 27 38 26 - 109 (Joe Johnson 23)
Game of the day?  Cleveland facing a tough opponent on the road and looking to emulate Houston come up a buck and a half short against a Syracuse team that is challenging this year with Lebron, Oscar and JJ.  To add insult to.. err.. injury, Penny limps off the court at the end after nearly lifting the Cavs to the win.  All tied up before Lebron took over late and Cleveland just couldn't quite close the gap.  No Oscar today for Syracuse but the Nationals were still able to come away with the win after a dominating 3rd quarter to roar back in to the game before a tight fourth.

(31-10) CHICAGO 32 42 37 37 - 148 (Magic Johnson 29)
(22-20) TORONTO 26 35 29 41 - 131 (Derrick Rose 28)
So Chicago aren't quite buying in to this two horse race in the NBA and match up Cleveland's record over the rapidly fading Raps.  The best to last?  Yes, as far as players go.  Magic is the ultimate point guard in this tenth season with his amazing versatility.  Today he goes for 29, 17 assists and 7 boards on 65% shooting leading the Bulls to 55% shooting overall and scoring at absolute will over the Raps.  Rose was stellar in defeat with his 28 and 12 a very respectable line against the greatest point guard ever but where were the forwards?  A 13 rebound edge to the victors tells the story as Toronto shot at nearly 60% but still lost the game.  KD for 9 points without fouling out?  Who was on him.........
