UBAL 10/76

(before I forget - trade deadline is approaching.. hit Utah up soon we're not done I hope)

Wednesday games are always a bit harder to write - I played a late game last night (yeah that WAS Wed in NZ) against a College team (University) that finished around 1030pm and was left feeling decidedly old.  Funny how I always talk about retiring after playing young guys - it's not just they're young, or that I felt slow and old, it's that guys like these would once have not been good enough to be my back-up.. damn it does suck getting old!

Anyway, after plenty of ice and a reasonable night's kip I'll probably hold off that retirement until at least the end of the season (I'm on 30,11 after all) ;)

For those who don't follow Facebook I also got engaged to my gorgeous fiancee Kim last Friday.  Worth shouting about and after swearing I'd never get married again, it takes someone special to realise just how wrong you can be!

On to the games.. and make it quick Nige...

Injuries
Mike Conley 1 (Face Laceration)
Jerry West 3 (Neck Ligament Sprain)
Dirk Nowitzki 2 (Hip Muscle Tendon Sprain)
Jermaine O’Neal 8 (Knee Cartilage Damage)
Dennis Johnson 1 (Calf Muscle Sprain)
World B Free 2 (Lower Leg Contusion)
Fat Lever 1 (Personal Reasons)

(22-17) TORONTO 30 20 25 27 - 102 (Rudy Gay 17)
(14-25) PORTLAND 29 33 23 29 - 114 (Sam Jones 28)
Toronto's speed-bump seems to be getting larger; this is not the time of year to step off the gas when you're on the edge of a great season.  One more trade from joining the top teams?  Not sure, but a great win for Portland at home taking advantage of Sam Jones's hot hand.

(23-16) SYRACUSE 22 24 22 30 - 98 (LeBron James 28)
(16-22) DETROIT 30 32 21 32 - 115 (Ricky Pierce 21)
Syracuse has been looking good of late but get brought down to earth thanks to Ricky and the home town Pistons.  Detroit are definitely a spoiler team unless they put a major run in.  Robert is an active GM (thanks heavens there are some of us - sorry to wake up the rest) so I'd be surprised if there aren't some moves ahead to improve the Pistons at least for next year.

(27-13) DALLAS 35 26 27 21 - 109 (Bob Pettit 22)
(28-10) CHICAGO 26 25 30 26 - 107 (Rick Barry 30)
Game of the day today as the Mavs literally stun the Bulls on their own court.  Close game throughout with Chicago closing the gap and tying the game in the dying seconds only to foul Bob Pettit in the last second.  Big fella calmly knocked them both down for the final difference.  Magic was simply off tonight and despite Rick Barry's hot-shot game it was the reason that Chicago didn't do their usual thing.  Loss number 10 for Da Bulls.

(24-15) MEMPHIS 25 25 29 33 - 112 (Adrian Dantley 29)
(12-29) PITTSBURGH 27 32 28 22 - 109 (Mel Daniels 25)
Great season for Memphis led by the stellar play of AD.  Dantley is a great UBA player and an out-and-out scorer.  Today Pittsburgh has to settle for coming close; leading all game to see AD and the Grizzlies overtake them in the final seconds - tough loss but a great win for Memphis.

(19-19) PHOENIX 40 31 21 23 14 - 129 (Steve Nash 26)
(15-25) WASHINGTON 23 32 38 22 5 - 120 (Terry Cummings 31)
Phoenix are back to .500 ball thanks to the shooting and passing of Steve Nash.  Nash's best defense has always been his offense.  If Nash could play defense (I mean, at all) he'd be considered one of the top point guards in history (rather than of his generation).  TC played well in defeat for Washington.  Ty will deal some more too (another great UBAL GM who is active).

(24-14) INDIANA 36 32 25 32 - 125 (George Gervin 30)
(26-13) NEW ORLEANS 35 30 30 25 - 120 (Patrick Ewing 30)
Indy is finding their groove and today at the expense of the super tough Jazz on their own court.  Great game with plenty of great sub-stories; love the game by big Ewing.  Ewing was a big man with a great mid-range game and a baseline fall-away that we're more used to seeing on a small-forward.  Today the ice-man provided the scoring and Love did the rest with help from the new duo of Mikan and Nater.  Indy is coached by Dave Suits; thanks for the congrats Dave (he's married to a Kim so knows the score ;)

(15-26) ANAHEIM 24 27 36 32 - 119 (David Thompson 31)
(14-26) SEATTLE 27 31 32 23 - 113 (Blake Griffin 29)
Anaheim doesn't play a whole lot of defensive but they do score well.  119 on the road was enough today to propel them past Blake and the Seattle home town Sonics.  David Thompson is another scoring machine!

(19-20) CAROLINA 24 29 31 43 - 127 (Hersey Hawkins 27)
(19-22) MIAMI 23 21 34 28 - 106 (Charlie Scott 27)
Will Carolina or Miami make .500?  The (other) Hawk fires off for 27 points to lead them over the Heat on the road for a good win for Carolina.

( 4-34) SAN ANTONIO 25 24 23 18 - 90 (Russell Westbrook 15)
(23-17) ORLANDO 43 34 22 33 - 132 (Roger Brown 26)
Shaun has a plan.  I'm not sure I know what it is but it involves Westbrook!  Orlando thumps the lowly Spurs at home in a game that simply was never close after a plus 18 first.  Jim Moore trades when he sees opportunity and it's good to see Orlando finally starting to move towards the plaoffs with a purpose!

That's it for this week, take care and remember to floss :)
