You'd think by this point of the season everyone would have an identity and know where they were going.. not so, there are those with and still plenty who have to decide what to do this year, next and so on..
Injuries are always a pain, particularly when you don't take them into account when making trades people - an 82 game superstar is worth their weight in gold (not Diesel) :)
Paul Millsap 2 (Lower Leg Contusion)
Rich Kelley 1 (Foot Ligament Sprain)
Devin Harris 2 (Wrist Tendinitis)
Sarunas Marciulionis 23 (Lower Back Slipped Disc)
Rashard Lewis 1 (Food Poisoning)
Gerald Wallace 8 (Lower Back Muscle Tendon Sprain)
On to the games..
(13- 8) TORONTO 32 31 34 19 - 116 (Derrick Rose 22)
( 8-12) DETROIT 26 22 32 27 - 107 (Ricky Pierce 22)
The surging Raps fly down to the Motor City and drive off with an impressive away win thanks to young Mr Rose and his upstart sidekicks. A last minute burst by Pierce and the Detroit squad put the game momentarily in question, but this game was really over in the first half as the Pistons seemed unable to stop the penetration by Rose and super-smooth KD. CP3 double-doubled but shot just 5-14 from the field to seal the fate of the home-town team. Detroit is in that position that the playoffs look to be slipping away.. whilst Toronto looks like they're headed for new territory!
(13- 7) INDIANA 33 30 26 30 - 119 (George Gervin 33)
(16- 5) BOSTON 11 26 30 26 - 93 (Dwyane Wade 16)
Indiana is for real and they show they can hang with, and overturn, the likes of a strong outfit like Boston even on the Beantown home court! Great game for the Iceman has he froze the defensive minded Boston all-night. Scottie Pippen is a great UBAL guy to have on your team, but he stunk it up shooting 5 of 18 for just 10 points. These are both teams headed for the playoffs I'm sure.
(10-11) ORLANDO 36 23 24 18 - 101 (Maurice Cheeks 17)
(15- 6) DALLAS 33 28 19 30 - 110 (Bob Pettit 29)
Orlando is perplexed. Not by this narrow away loss on a surging comeback by the Mavs and super Pettit in the fourth, but by the way the season is going. A slow start, then they found their groove and looked to be a dangerous team.. now back below .500? Could Doc Love be wrong (is that blasphemy?), could Orlando really miss the playoffs? Dallas are rocking though and happy to be sitting up high in a very tough division in the ABA. KG and Grant Hill combined to miss 20 of their 30 shots.
( 5-17) PITTSBURGH 20 17 28 20 - 85 (Mel Daniels 28)
( 8-13) NEW JERSEY 31 30 22 36 - 119 (Lou Hudson 24)
New Jersey is headed in the right direction (that's the second time I think I've said that in ONE season Steve) and today they thump a Pitt team that is headed nowhere fast. I actually think the league is very slow with trades from some of the teams that aren't built for now.. don't get it.. if I can't win now.. I want to win later.. otherwise why bother? Sorry, no criticism intended and certainly not against these teams, but if you don't have a plan then maybe it's time to get one if you sit well below .500. (of course if you do have a plan please disregard and don't feel compelled now to share it with the league of course). Today Igoudala and the Hawk brought it for NJ and just Mel showed up for Pittsburgh.. he still needs help (or a new home).
(12- 9) MEMPHIS 32 26 21 28 - 107 (Adrian Dantley 24)
(18- 3) HOUSTON 31 30 33 25 - 119 (Dave DeBusschere 25)
Houston are leaving no doubts around their intentions or championship aspirations and are as good a team as there is in this league right now. Still Memphis has shown some serious improvement this year and the fact that they are able to challenge teams like Houston (although it wasn't that close in the second half) is a testament to how far they've come. But the playoffs aren't a lock yet for Memphis.. Today great to see DDB up there in the scoring, a defensive specialist that often gets not much rub in the writeups DDB was a solid Utah Star for years in the UBAL and great to see him playing well (although in Houston everyone gets their chance to shine). No joy for AD but he sure can score.
( 6-15) SEATTLE 22 14 24 26 - 86 (Danny Granger 12)
(14- 7) MINNESOTA 26 33 36 30 - 125 (Phil Smith 22)
Minnesota is going to the playoffs unless something changes. Phil Smith is playing at a high-level and the team is clicking. Seattle made some moves this year to look to the future, just as well; when your top scorer has 12 in this league you are in BIG danger of a blowout. Today it was a 40 point blasting as all 24 players in Minny got a few points. (well only 1 for Tony Parker actually).
( 9-11) PHOENIX 35 32 24 37 - 128 (Sam Cassell 27)
( 7-15) ANAHEIM 25 23 39 28 - 115 (David Thompson 27)
Is Phoenix going to make a move and challenge the playoff bound teams? It's now or never and today they get a solid win over an Anaheim team that does not like to play defense. Defense is not a dirty word my friends and it certainly helps win games. DT was brought in because he can score but Nash (another defensive MIA) literally picked apart the Anaheim guards with Sam Cassell finding the bottom of the net repeatedly. Anaheim is going to call it on the season? Trades coming?
( 8-13) VIRGINIA 20 17 39 32 - 108 (Willie Naulls 29)
(11- 9) SYRACUSE 32 34 25 31 - 122 (LeBron James 22)
Well you can't accuse Virginia of standing still. Everyone is on the trading block including Willie Naulls who poured in 29 today to lead scorers in the game but this game was over EARLY with a half-time lead of 29 points. LBJ was fired up for a big night but coach O'Donnell yanked him early before he did something stupid. Nice 16 boards by Horse in 30 minutes of action - he also shot 75% but only took 4 shots! Moses Malone was his usual studly double-double self and someone needs to fire an offer if they're sitting on the cusp, word is he's available for the right price.
( 0-20) SAN ANTONIO 25 29 29 29 - 112 (Archie Clark 28)
(17- 5) SAN DIEGO 36 35 36 35 - 142 (Kobe Bryant 28)
San Antonio are in a groove, or rut.. what we sometimes term a Bum's Rush. How can you actually lose 20 straight games? Wow. What's the plan Shaun, you know it's a lottery league right? Is Wilt up for regen? Sorry buddy, but really? Kobe has found his home and he may end up retiring right here in San Diego. Another big score for the Qs with 142 on the hapless Spurs. What I like is the unlikely meshing of Kobe and Elgin Baylor; they're just great on the floor together this year; I also like how just when you think you know just about everything something comes along and shows you that you don't really know anything at all. Oh well, at least we know the Spurs will win this year right???
That's it for games take a look at the ratings and box scores below if you're still awake :)
