Day 142 as the playoffs get ever closer and the separation between men and boys becomes clearer - or does it? The NBA conference has a ten team battle royal going and so does the ABA - only difference is that a .500 record will walk you in to the ABA whereas a 0.600 record in the NBA leaves you fighting for lottery picks.
So Kobe says he wont take a charge and prefers to stand up and play defense? Truth is great defense is played mostly with the feet so staying on them would seem to be the best play. Regardless of where someone is positioned I hate the idea that a player can actually be in the air before the defense is set and still get called for a charge. I'm not anti a charge call - hell I wish they'd call some of the clear arm-off attacks, but flopping.. ooh there's another thing entirely. I may have cried in pain on a drive to the basket with a whisper of a touch but flopping is girly cheating in my book, and this is my blog so I'm entitled to my opinion right? (editor: yes, that's correct)
Injuries

(15-57) Original Celtic 18 19 22 9 - 68 (Maurice Lucas 13)
(51-22) Akron Firestone 24 31 30 32 - 117 (Paul Arizin 22)
So here we are at crunch time and guess which team now sits top of the pile? Pitchin' Paul and his mighty Firestones as predicted at the start of the year. Does it matter in the NBA? Yes and no. It's home court advantage and that will be good, but 8 teams of great quality will battle it out and somehow one will make it out alive. First round will be fun with at least an upset or two.. The Celtics incidentally are not in the same league in every way that matters. Big blow out to start the day on a flop performance from the OCs.

(48-27) Texas Chaparral 33 47 34 36 - 150 (Walt Bellamy 27)
Do you smell the top teams gearing up? Texas rips the lowly Cougars for a whopping 150 as they share the ball and splatter them all over the court. Texas has really found their stride and are now looking like the pick of the ABA - back to back titles for Texas.. maybe!

(36-39) Sheboygan Redsk 27 20 25 36 - 108 (Dennis Rodman 26)
(50-24) Milwaukee Bucks 24 37 31 33 - 125 (Larry Bird 34)
Are we going to get a close game today? The Bucks are still fighting for the NBA East and now just sit a game back from the Knicks at 50 wins. Would you want to face them in the first round? Bird was awesome today bombing away and cutting up the Redskins. Lebron had an off day. Bit like today in the NBA where the Pacers took down the self-proclaimed King and his royal hoardes (shame eh?).

(47-26) Trenton Tigers 42 29 31 19 - 121 (Andrew Gaze 25)
Trenton isn't giving up on the top spot yet and another blowout game as they easily handle the Generals in Trenton. Lazer Gaze had his sights set and led the way for the ABA powerhouse that now finds itself in a real scrap for bragging rights in the ABA. Game looked over after a 16 point lead in the first but the Generals (led by their own little general Paxson) fought back in the second to at least look like making a game of it; hey it was closer than the Lakers got to OKC last night in the NBA.

(34-39) Charlotte Bobca 34 27 27 27 - 115 (Keith VanHorn 26)
(21-53) Wilkes-Barre Ba 38 21 30 37 - 126 (Karl Malone 39)
The Barons step up to ruin the up and down Bobcat's night with a solid win on their home floor behind the awesome play of Karl Malone. I always remember Malone as a bit of a flopper myself. If I had to square up to Karl Malone or John Stockton, I'd pick Malone - Stockton didn't look much but was TUFF, Malone looked like a Greek God but (and just my opinion here - see above) was all bark and no bite. Still I'm not taking away his playing ability and today he was numero uno behind his 39 points. VanHorn played a nice game but those socks just look silly.

(52-21) Buffalo Braves 22 24 36 23 - 105 (Rick Barry 28)
(45-28) San Diego Sails 18 35 24 23 - 100 (Otis Birdsong 19)
Finally a game that's close and it is between two of the top teams with the Braves again regaining the top spot in the UBAS (shared with the Sharon Stones) thanks to an enormous away win over the highly rated Sails. Game of the day? Yeah I reckon and Maurice Stokes was the MAN as he came up with 23/16/9 for a near triple double. Don't you hate it in today's NBA when they say a 22/7/8 is a near triple double? I think you've got to either have it in two categories or get a couple of 9s to be in the hunt. The weird one is assists, I've seen players with some great passes that should have led to easy hoops.. Anyway, that aside, how about a hockey assist or a pass that results in free-throws (not for penalty ones obviously)?

(38-33) New Orleans Hor 32 20 21 24 - 97 (Don Otten 26)
(49-23) LA Lakers 17 28 28 27 - 100 (Tim Duncan 22)
The Lakers are far from done in the search for top of the division/NBA/UBAS but they need to play better than this to get there. Granted NO are no pushover but on their home court there were signs of upset as they started very slowly before gradually working back in to the game behind their Twin Towers. The Hornets have had a real good season and things look promising for them as they continue to play hard each game. Watch for them to play spoiler in the last few days of the season.

(19-54) Brooklyn Indian 24 29 27 44 - 124 (Kevin Durant 27)
(39-34) Hawaii Chiefs 26 31 32 30 - 119 (Alonzo Mourning 29)
The Chiefs were running hot but a little while ago and suddenly they don't look so good, but this was an upset in anyone's books. The Indians searching for win number 19 travel to Hawaii and show an amazing finish to score 44 and walk away with the win. KD was unmarkable as he time and time again slipped and slid his way to 27 points including the game winning spell at the end. Hawaii held a 9 point lead at the start of the fourth but they were unable to stop the surging Indians who literally ran away with it at the end. How costly will this type of loss be for the Chiefs as they stutter to the post-season?

(31-43) St Louis Spirit 27 29 27 25 - 108 (Larry Johnson 25)
(38-35) Chicago Crusade 38 33 20 26 - 117 (Chris Mullin 23)
The Spirits have been showing signs of life recently with some upsets and tough wins and this was another battling display. Difference is that the Crusaders are fighting for playoff position and wanted the game more in the final stages. Curious stat was by Grandmama who managed to pull down a game high 12 boards but not one on the offensive end. He had a good game though and was the reason it got this close. Mullin provided the points but it was the Sears and Sabonis double-doubles that sealed the win.
