The Indians roll into Savoy looking for a win over a close rival but get shown the blowout mode from the first quarter onwards as they are royally spanked by nearly 40 points. Alex English was bandied around (mostly by Stan in all fairness) before finding a home in Savoy - and a good fit it seems to be as he has regained his scoring touch. Indians have been disappointing this year, but have some brighter future with their young guns.
(24-36) Brooklyn Indian 20 24 31 11 - 86 (Lou Hudson 18)
(27-34) Savoy Big Five 38 26 28 31 - 123 (Alex English 28)
I really thought the Warriors were starting to make a run a couple of weeks back but they seem to have slipped back to being a sub-500 team that won't challenge for the playoffs. Going to visit Scranton is never fun (let alone for basketball reasons!) but they find a way to make every game gritty and this one is no different with a hard fought battle between the Squid and recently unleashed Dale Ellis. I like Scranton as an outfit, they are pretty close to the Gens this year (but neither looks good enough to topple the Rens imho).
(29-33) Golden State Wa 20 25 27 25 - 97 (Sidney Moncrief 22)
(39-23) Scranton Miners 20 18 39 24 - 101 (Dale Ellis 25)
Gears are on fire and the NBA is noticing. Many of us had them on the radar before the season started but they were pretty so-so for so long that they kind of got forgotten about. Amare has been on a tear recently and another 33 point outburst today was needed to overcome a difficult All Star outfit. Lebron has quietly been putting together a heck of a season and he leads them today with a triple double and 26 points (not to mention 3 blocks and 3 steals on the defensive end). Oshkosh are a bit of an awkward middle team... they'll likely cause an upset or two to playoff teams on the wind down.
(40-21) Chicago Gears 47 32 34 24 - 137 (Amare Stoudemire 33)
(23-39) Oshkosh All Sta 38 34 25 30 - 127 (Richie Guerin 32)
Washington could use a solid win to get some safe difference between them and Scranton, but the Nets although a .500 team are mighty dangerous to a visiting outfit. So it goes today with the upset win after a blitzing 45-27 first quarter that the Gens could never recover from. Mutombo out muscled Moses Malone (more points and rebounds) with his 19 and 15 and 3 big blocks and 7 players hit double digits led by Spaghetti Maggette. Washington losses don't give me any pleasure but I know a couple of GMs are already warming up their Slack smack.
(42-20) Washington Gene 27 26 25 26 - 104 (George Gervin 28)
(32-31) New Jersey Nets 45 25 28 22 - 120 (Corey Maggette 20)
Sounds Rockets. You'd figure a close matchup with the home team maybe holding off Memphis? Kinda - 'cept not that close, Rockets cruise behind a big second quarter - too much Jordan and Kareem for Love and Ewing - particularly Ewing who fouled out in a pathetic 18 minutes with 6 points and 3 boards.
(31-31) Memphis Sounds 25 18 27 32 - 102 (Kevin Love 22)
(33-27) Denver Rockets 26 31 29 38 - 124 (Michael Jordan 26)
Two games back the Hornets stunned the Knicks at home. Knicks fought back with a big win in Charlotte spurred by the defensive efforts of Jerry West - who gets the third straight matchup of these two? Knicks in a close affair, led by the scoring of Ming who matched Schmidt's 27 but the story again was the defensive efforts of the Logo. 16.9 in the last encounter, backed up by a 15.9 in this with 11 steals and 2 blocks. CP3 had his usual impact with 14 points, 13 assists and 5 steals (16 again for that backcourt) and Baylor was good all-round. Robertson didn't shoot well for the Hornets, but his 16 dimes were nice if only it weren't for the 7 turn-overs. Rodman led all rebounders with an impressive 18.
(34-28) Charlotte Horne 26 29 30 36 - 121 (Oscar Schmidt 27)
(42-18) New York Knicks 26 30 31 40 - 127 (Yao Ming 27)
Trenton have been pretty poor recently - a trip to Atlanta is usually good for that! But no, the Hawks solidly beat the Tigers up and down as Joe Johnson proves his worth and out guns McGinnis on the way to a 17 point win for the hometown heroes. Dozen wins for Atlanta.
(21-39) Trenton Tigers 30 34 17 32 - 113 (George McGinnis 26)
(12-51) Atlanta Hawks 32 32 27 39 - 130 (Joe Johnson 28)
Globies v Rens again. More of a matchup this time? Nah, too easy for the Rens as they rally off 144 behind a huge Chuckles game with 39 points and 12 boards in efficient style and player of the day honours. Stackhouse was huge with an even bigger haul of 45 for the visitors but truthfully this one was out of reach from early in the first half.
(27-33) Harlem Globetro 30 30 32 34 - 126 (Jerry Stackhouse 45)
(46-15) New York Rens 34 42 30 38 - 144 (Charles Barkley 39)
Gears get one of those weird double-header things that I don't understand. Never mind they get to go home and face off against the Pistons. Two games are no worry for the in-form team in the NBA as they cruise to a 14 point win due to a huge fourth quarter surge by Lebron and co. Mullin is their unsung hero with 35 to complement LBJ's 37. Note how Big Ben anchor's this team - rarely a double-digit points man, but impactful none the less. Good day for the Gears indeed.
(23-40) Fort Wayne Pist 31 33 31 16 - 111 (Dolph Schayes 21)
(41-21) Chicago Gears 37 31 25 32 - 125 (LeBron James 37)
