Let’s start with the positives: no new injuries today! Of course if you’re one of the teams facing off against one of the two winners today (that’s me and you Danno) then that’s not so positive I guess!
It’s only right and proper that we get a game or two to go 7 even in the first round. If I had to predict how many games and in which conference they’d be I guess I’d go with about half and all from the ABA - that’s on the money as we have two playoff games and rightly between the 4th and 5th and 3rd and 6th seeds too.
Okay… enough, let’s get to the games!
Houston Rockets:
Nene Hilario 17 (Achilles Tendon Sprain)
Baltimore Claws:
Carl Landry 16 (Hand Fracture)
San Diego Qs:
Amir Johnson 11 (Lung Punctured)
Utah Stars:
Julius Erving 3 (Ankle Ligament Tear)
( 3- 4) San Antonio Spu 25 30 27 32 - 114 (Anthony Davis 25)
( 4- 3) Virginia Squire 23 32 34 33 - 122 (Sidney Moncrief 33)
The Spurs have given Ginny all they can handle in this series and through another 4 quarters today. A great series in which the emergence of Anthony Davis as a superstar has become apparent - echoing the real-life scenario playing out in the NBA right now. The best player on the court for Virginia and the reason they were able to squeeze past the Spurs and into a second round matchup with the Claws is Sid the Squid. Fantastic play by the often underrated wing-man. Also check out what Steph Curry is doing - his coach recently proclaimed him the best point guard in the NBA right now. I’ve always thought of Curry as more of a 2 or a combo guard than pure point guard, but you can’t argue with the numbers he’s putting up right now and he’s looking real good in both actual and historical leagues. Props go to the Spurs for totally turning it around after being dismal for the last couple of years and coming so close to what would have been an interesting matchup in Baltimore. As it is the Squires pack-up and head off to their old divisional rivals for another 7 gamer (well, maybe).
( 3- 4) Kentucky Colone 33 28 30 24 - 115 (Louie Dampier 25)
( 4- 3) San Diego Qs 28 26 37 31 - 122 (Bob Kauffman 26)
There was an edge to this one alright, even a bit of pre-match talk between the GMs as they postured before tip-off. The game was another close one tied after three quarters of action and everything on the line. It seems that the return of Elgin Baylor is absolutely the difference maker for the Qs - we all know you can’t really stop Kobe but that won’t win you games consistently, you need a Baylor type guy too. Of course one thing Jeff alluded to is you have to give a heck of a lot of credit to Bob Kauffman - today he outplays Kareem and that’s the series folks - heck with 26/11/9 he was only one dime off a historic triple double. The killer for the Colonels was the lack of D though. Rick and Kareem did their part but they couldn’t seem to stop Kauffman and co scoring. Sad to see our old master Jeff drop out in the first, but that’s been the story of the year for Kentucky, almost getting it together and then just falling short. Congrats to the Qs - should be a close series against Utah Stars next round - I’ll blog what I think will happen on my Utah Stars blog site so catch there if you want to know!
On to Round 2! Adam, please let us know the deadline before games - that’s been really helpful
