Day 123 hits the UBAL and here we go again. It’s edging towards crunch time when the top teams are looking from 40s to 50s and the bottom are looking at playoff positioning and the ones in between aren’t even looking any more.
How many teams have hit 50 so far? Easy - only Houston and they’re romping on towards 70 wins.
But the number of teams with 40+ wins or late 30s is pretty much most of the playoff bound contenders and where most action is occurring.

Then there’s Kentucky. 30 wins and a sub-500 record but still holding on to a top 4 spot in the ABA conference and a lock for the playoffs (although potentially a tough first-round matchup). Anyways the Magic are closing in rapidly on 50 and one of the top 3 teams in the league (and NBA conference too incidentally - and I think as I run the currently top ranked ABA team I’m as good as anyone to admit that). Too much super stud Grant Hill today for the Kentucky fried Colonels and they drop further below .500 (as if it mattered at this point of the season).
(31-31) Syracuse Nation 22 23 30 29 - 104 (Harry Gallatin 15)
(31-33) Pittsburgh Cond 34 28 29 29 - 120 (Monta Ellis 20)
Syracuse have now fallen to .500 after a loss to .500 chasing Condors. Lebron James with 9 points. Really. That’s going to equal a Syracuse loss most days and certainly on day 123. Good win for the Condors as they’re now a couple of games outside of .500 and matching the Nationals win total at 31 (remember 40’s where it gets interesting).

Detroit haven’t done too well since trading for Big Wilt and today continues that trend with a fair thrashing at the hands of the Raps and their star Durantula.

(31-33) Rochester Royal 26 23 33 25 - 107 (Rasheed Wallace 22)
The other top 3 team was also in action and like their Magic counterparts they get a solid away win over a team just below .500 in the Royals. Melo has been surprisingly effective this year and has also led his team to a very successful +50 (okay, not yet but you can book it). Penny, Russell, Bird and Tony Parker live in Cleveland too so they’re a real contender.

Dallas continue to collect balls and the Thunder take the away win thanks to a fourth quarter surge.

(43-22) Brooklyn Nets 37 35 32 42 - 146 (Shaquille O'Neal 33)
The Celtics are no longer as bad as the Chaps but they get schlammocked (could be) by the Nets thanks to Shaq Daddy and his player of the day heroics. It wasn’t that close and not even James Harden’s defensive prowess could save the beanies.

Could the Bombers have a late surge and push out the fading Colonels? Yeah they could but I can’t see it personally, good game by Yao Ming and a quality win on the road although a fourth quarter to forget nearly coughed it up.
(46-18) Washington Wiza 30 19 33 22 - 104 (Lou Hudson 32)
(31-31) Phoenix Suns 23 20 22 36 - 101 (Elton Brand 25)
Wizards are a very good team (as good as any in the ABA conference I’d say) and they survive a Suns blazing fourth quarter to steal the away win by 3 points. Hudson was a great addition this year - could the Wizards be a surprise package NBA side?

At this stage of the season there is still a really clear favourite though and that’s the 53 win Houston Rockets. If it wasn’t for the fact that they somehow didn’t win it all last year despite dominating all year long then I’d already put a crown on them. Seriously there are two or three teams that could actually provide a very stiff challenge to the likely number one seed… Chris Paul was a heck of an addition - although one could argue John Stockton was a heck of a loss… but look at the Houston roster and it’s absolutely ridiculously stacked.
