This time last week Utah was riding a massive win streak and I must say I was pleasantly surprised by it :) Today’s games we’re coming in riding a two game slide; oh well, you win some you lose some - even the mighty Houston has achieved that (they just win about 5 times as many as they lose - although Adam may correct me on that mathematically). I’m glad the USA won the World Champs of Basketball - they were clearly the only team to play consistently well throughout their games; much kudos to the French though, they really shocked everyone by kicking the favoured (okay, favoured for Silver) Spaniards. I do find it funny when players say ‘it’s the greatest achievement of my career’ though. I don’t see how that can be. When you are that clearly the favourites and winning by margins of 25+ every game then the challenges aren’t that great - for a player like Batum, achieving Bronze was amazing because HE needed to perform at a level he had never been asked of before - Harden could have taken the day off (at both ends instead of just one this time) and the US would still have coasted.
In similar competition we recently hosted a tournament in New Zealand called the AIMS games for 12 and 13 year olds in a range of sports. It was held in Tauranga in the beautiful Bay of Plenty where I live. There were over 7,000 competitors from Australia and New Zealand present and I’m proud to say my little girl was one of them (basketball of course!). No real point. Just sharing :)

( 5-47) Dallas Chaparra 25 14 24 16 - 79 (Tim Thomas 18)
(25-29) Carolina Cougar 36 21 30 26 - 113 (Dan Issel 28)
Dallas sucks and Carolina literally butcher them. I’ll get in trouble if I say ‘break up the Chaps’ when they win (it’s now been said 6 times this year with my error)...
(27-25) Anaheim Amigos 25 22 32 32 - 111 (Glenn Robinson 22)
(39-14) Utah Stars 25 34 24 35 - 118 (Julius Erving 29)
Okay, I feel a tad better to put the losing slide on hold with a tight win over an Amigos side that has really picked themselves back up again. Dr J had a howler last game but he bounces immediately back to form to guide Utah to the finish line. Magic with another triple double (shame that the UBA rating system rates everything on how many points you score and how efficiently far more than the way a player really dominates a game - but hey ho, that’s the way in the real world too I guess).
(14-38) Portland Trailb 22 29 26 22 - 99 (Randy Denton 18)
(38-15) Washington Wiza 45 40 39 33 - 157 (Marques Johnson 37)
Ouch!! 58 point (yes 58) thwacking of epic proportions put on by the Wizards over the troubled and struggling Blazers. 85-51 at the half. I’m sure there’s a bunch of records in there but it wasn’t pretty. Unsurprisingly MJ was player of the day feasting on the TBs lowly defense (can I even call it that?) and Nash dished his way to number two on the list. Fortunately Coach O’Donnell will have no problems drowning his sorrows ;)
(26-29) Harlem Rens 26 39 20 38 - 123 (Brian Taylor 17)
(31-22) San Diego Qs 39 22 24 18 - 103 (Kobe Bryant 24)
Harlem aren’t likely to make a huge recovery and run for the playoffs, but they will sure derail a few others on the way through the rest of the season anyways. Tonight the had-been-hot Qs get a taste of it. Kobe continues to score, but the Qs are really missing Baylor right now...
(14-37) Carbondale Aces 31 26 25 27 - 109 (Michael CarterWilliams 21)
(27-25) Kentucky Colone 30 37 34 38 - 139 (Kareem AbdulJabbar 30)
The new look Colonels are back! Suddenly that 5th seed in the ABA might not be as easy a ticket to the quarters as it looked! Yes Rick Barry can really change the way a team looks - he’s a one and done player for Kentucky so they’ve rolled the dice on this year before agreeing to handover Kareem to me at the end of the year (Jeff, you may not remember this discussion because of the alcohol - I’m not actually convinced you were there either!). Jabbar has been good all season but missing a wing-man and Jeff knew it wasn’t ‘Nique - Barry looks like he could be that man - early days but looking like a good trade for both teams.
(17-35) Detroit Pistons 36 24 24 24 - 108 (Wilt Chamberlain 24)
( 6-47) Dallas Chaparra 41 25 14 31 - 111 (Walter Berry 20)
Break up the Chaps! Yay a rare double header for the UBA and even rarer another Dallas W!! Wilt plays like he should but it’s not enough to overcome Walter Berry :/ Yikes, a strange day indeed. An all-over-the-place game; Dallas with 41 in the first and 14 in the third were hot and cold all night and caught fire late in the fourth to rally and stun Detroit. Detroit didn’t trade for Wilt for this year as it’s too late, but they’ll want their pieces to come together better than this next year.
(43- 9) Houston Rockets 35 26 25 32 - 118 (Clyde Drexler 28)
(28-24) Oklahoma City T 35 35 38 21 - 129 (Blake Griffin 36)
OKC bounces back to give Houston their 9th loss of the year; yes it’s an upset because Houston are that good and only a fourth quarter surge made it look like it was a closer game than it was. BG had his ginger way with the Rockets front line unleashing a series of posterising dunks over the hallowed stars of the Rockets. Haven’t seen much of Drexler this year at the top of the charts - he’s a good background piece for the Rocks and would be the star on plenty of teams - Karl Malone casts a fairly big shadow though!!
(16-36) Miami Floridian 31 33 28 25 - 117 (Bob Feerick 25)
(24-28) Phoenix Suns 22 20 22 33 - 97 (Dave Cowens 17)
In a battle of the hots (places, not records) Miami out scorches the suns (man, I’ve turned into a bad newspaper reporter). Bob Feerick in the last couple of years in UBAL and UBAS has really shown he can be the man for a team - never on my radar like Don Buse (other end of the court I appreciate) - some of you guys are amazing at finding these guys and I tip my hat to you. This one is an upset with the Suns a fairly respectable team man-handled by Miami (a little less respectable) on their home floor. Any given night though...
(34-20) Brooklyn Nets 21 19 28 32 - 100 (Jerry West 23)
(22-32) Minnesota Muski 28 23 28 27 - 106 (Kiki Vandeweghe 34)
Another upset to finish; but I’ve said from early in the season that Minnesota is one of those hot and cold teams that can cause upsets. Close game and a wild finish behind Jerry West but the Nets can’t quite get it done. Kiki is a great one-way player and if you need a scorer you can really rely on him. I’ve got Kelly Tripucka on my team and I think he’s similar - love to use guys like that as sparks off the bench so that a two-way player can start, but can’t argue with anyone playing a guy like Kiki minutes when he produces efficient scoring like this.
