UBAL 12 Day 89
Trade deadline is almost upon us... I'm usually pretty active around deadline time, but with a pretty good win-streak and a team I'm really attached too, I haven't sought out much (other than offering up Rod Strickland) right now. Will we have some big moves? Potentially I think we'll see a couple, but my guess is the championship contenders may look to add depth rather than too many star moves (although I reserve the right to be completely wrong).
Unfortunately my Tall Blacks were unable to pull off what would have been a massive upset over the US in the World Champs, but good to see plenty of fight from our unrated squad. It could actually have been a different champs for NZ if we'd just managed to edge Turkey in the opener... up most of the game and lost 76-73...
Injuries
Andre Iguodala 5
Eddie Jones 1
Kenny Anderson 4
Anthony Davis 7
Elgin Baylor 10 - now a 10 game injury is never fun, especially when you're fighting for a high playoff spot and the star of the day is the one to get injured...
(34-12) Utah Stars 40 34 21 32 - 127 (Magic Johnson 21)
(10-35) New Jersey Amer 28 18 31 32 - 109 (Alvan Adams 24)
Believe it or not I had a matchup against the 10 win NJ Americans as a potential upset for the Stars minus their coach's all-time favourite Dr J. I'm probably going to trade Dr J to Steve at the end of the season just because I think it's the right place to serve out his career! Fortunately Magic was on his game and Duncan and Coleman controlled the paint and Chet scored enough for a fairly easy victory. AA was impressive in the loss for Jersey.
(21-26) Philadelphia 76 25 35 28 25 - 113 (Bob McAdoo 27)
(18-28) Minnesota Muski 37 35 19 33 - 124 (Nick VanExel 20)
Nick the quick and the Muskies continue to be one of the best upset teams in the league. They may not be playoff bound, but they'll happily be a thorn in the side of those that are.
(26-21) Rochester Royal 25 31 26 32 - 114 (Spencer Haywood 25)
(17-28) Detroit Pistons 30 30 40 25 - 125 (John Stockton 21)
Royals roll into Detroit looking to continue their good play, but the Pistons also enjoy the spoiler role. The Pistons have Stockton who is, just in my opinion of course, the third best point guard of all-time and arguably the purest. Haywood continues to pour in the points for the Royals in the loss.
(22-23) Syracuse Nation 30 24 24 22 - 100 (LeBron James 34)
(25-23) Harlem Rens 24 19 29 19 - 91 (Mike Woodson 17)
Harlem is the best defensive team in the league. Unfortunately on the flip side they're not that great at scoring and Lebron wasn't about to be contained by the best defense in the league.
(24-21) Oklahoma City T 32 32 26 38 - 128 (Ben Gordon 26)
(30-17) Brooklyn Nets 32 21 29 28 - 110 (Jerry West 31)
Upset as the very good Nets get easily overturned by OKC. OKC push three games over .500 with their best result of the year. Ben Gordon somehow dueled Jerry West and that worked?
(23-24) Pittsburgh Cond 25 23 40 24 - 112 (Shareef AbdurRahim 29)
(12-33) Miami Floridian 37 22 40 25 - 124 (Bob Feerick 25)
Bob Feerick has found a way to continue to score well in UBA leagues and tonight is no different as he leads the (now) 12 win Floridians to the upset over visiting .500 (then) Pittsburgh. Very even game after a big first quarter 12 point difference that stayed that way through the game.
(23-23) Anaheim Amigos 28 36 24 34 - 122 (Chris Mullin 28)
(26-20) Toronto Raptors 33 29 26 32 - 120 (Kevin Durant 28)
Would you call this an upset? Early in the season no as the Amigos were flying but they came down pretty hard to well below .500. Thing is you may not have noticed them clawing their way back up and now right back into playoff contention with an impressive squeaker over the Raptors North of the border. Durant v Mullin was fun and they matched point for point and both had great games. Norm Nixon may have only scored 10 points in 39 minutes of play, but he cooly sank the game winner as time expired and all of Toronto marked Mullin.
(32-13) Orlando Magic 27 20 27 21 - 95 (Connie Hawkins 20)
(27-19) San Antonio Spu 33 25 29 29 - 116 (Mychal Thompson 21)
Spurs have been out of sorts recently but a few wins back and they're starting to gain momentum, none more impressive than against a really good Magic outfit. Spurs did it in style blowing out Orlando in front of their passionate crowd and winning every quarter in the process... especially without Anthony Davis and Westbrook.
(12-34) Portland Trailb 31 22 31 23 - 107 (Dave Bing 22)
(28-19) San Diego Qs 38 31 29 28 - 126 (Elgin Baylor 34)
Huge game for Elgin Baylor spoiled by that 10 game injury at the end. Easy win for San Diego as they move ahead of the Spurs again - could be quite a battle, especially with the key injuries to Elgin and several of the Spurs key players.
