I've noticed recently that the Lakers have been as bad at 'tanking' as they were at trying to win games through most of the season. Seriously if you had to face one of the league's worst teams right now when wins were essential it's about the only time of the year you don't want to play them...
Good I say. Tanking is a bit like flopping. It's okay to fall over when someone hits you, but it's not okay to fall over because someone is near and looks like they could have. It's fine to not have a very good team (Lakers this year) or even to have a good team that plays badly (Lakers last year) but it's not okay to deliberately try and lose games or put yourself in a deliberate position that you can't win them.
Yes, I get the dynamics and economics of rebuilding, but there are no draws in basketball - it's a game we play to win and that should be the desire of all teams.
(steps down from high horse).
Injuries
Kiki Vandeweghe 2
Marques Johnson 1
(26-37) Washington Gene 19 28 22 17 8 - 94 (Dwyane Wade 18)
(23-39) Philadelphia Sp 19 30 17 20 10 - 96 (Terry Cummings 26)
Tight game to open proceedings between two non-playoff bound teams (I think it's finally time to write off the Generals). Wade is back and healthy but Generals aren't going to make it this year. TC lights them up to the tune of 26 to keep the home town fans happy.
(43-19) New York Knicks 31 14 25 33 - 103 (Wilt Chamberlain 31)
(27-35) Original Celtic 28 32 22 29 - 111 (Carmelo Anthony 32)
Rudy T is back! The Knicks are in a bit of a lull right now and the landscape at the top is changing slightly. Wilt is great and played his usual solid game, but Melo ripped the Knicks defense for 32 and Truck Robinson's 18 points and 17 boards kept them out of reach for the comeback that never came. Rudy T played pretty poorly after his triumphant return last game... maybe I'll bench him again :)
(29-33) LA Stars 32 26 29 31 - 118 (Shaquille O'Neal 33)
(14-49) Atlanta Hawks 37 19 23 27 - 106 (Albert Pullins 26)
Stars get a solid win behind Shaq daddy and keep their playoff hopes alive.. Atlanta aren't very good this year it's safe to say.
(36-25) Cincinnati Roya 29 28 27 29 - 113 (Hank Luisetti 25)
(25-37) Brooklyn Indian 17 25 21 35 - 98 (Kevin Durant 19)
Lorde's Royals rise back again and are right back in the thick of the playoffs sitting anywhere from 5-8 at current rate... the Indians lose Kiki for a while and Durant can't do it all on his own in this league.
(43-18) LA Lakers 39 29 35 21 - 124 (Chris Webber 29)
(38-25) New Orleans Hor 34 28 27 24 - 113 (Chris Bosh 22)
Lookie lookie which team got hot in a hurry. A recent stretch of two wins over the Sonics (who were red hot before) and quality away wins over playoff hopefully New Orleans suddenly has them overtaking NY for 2nd spot... and chasing down the Bucks. Webber has changed his game to fit in in LA and suddenly we have a new favourite emerging out the NBA. I still hope they get a first round matchup wtih the Sonics (is there any way they can knock each other out?). Robinson, Duncan and Webber all top 10 today and if that happens they are almost unbeatable...
(46-16) Milwaukee Bucks 32 32 17 17 - 98 (Reggie Miller 20)
(39-24) Anderson Packer 23 29 30 26 - 108 (Artis Gilmore 25)
Speaking of teams that have picked it up recently, here come the Pack again! Gilmore has brought his A-game! Down go the Bucks again; the door is opening for the Lakers...
(35-29) Trenton Tigers 29 25 34 28 - 116 (Elgin Baylor 41)
(35-28) Baltimore Bulle 34 44 38 21 - 137 (Bob Lanier 26)
...and in case you forgot the Bullets have been playing pretty good recently too and they take down the ABA playoff bound Tigers despite Elgin Baylor exploding for 41 points - check his stat line and defensive rating too. No difference though.. Lanier and the Bullets easily took care of business at home.
(38-25) Minnesota Piper 28 37 39 20 - 124 (Tracy McGrady 26)
(26-36) Charlotte Bobca 21 32 35 17 - 105 (Oscar Schmidt 22)
McGrady is now on one of his good runs and that makes the Pipers dangerous. Solid away win over Charlotte will keep the playoff positioning running according to schedule.
(42-21) Akron Firestone 30 31 32 36 - 129 (George Mikan 30)
(39-23) Hawaii Chiefs 30 22 37 18 - 107 (Joe Fulks 23)
Did I say that the door was open for the Lakers - I missed a team out in that... don't sleep on the Firestones for the title chase either. Reigning champs of course but they seem to be rounding into form at the right time and this total dismantling of the Chiefs in Hawaii certainly makes a statement. If Mikan doesn't foul out he tends to do a lot of damage...
Strange to see neither Wilt nor Russell on the defensive list (there again both teams lost...)
