Day 107 of the UBAS 4th season rolls logically on the back of day 106... some jiggling around in the ABA today and business as usual in the NBA.
Trade deadline is now long behind us; my strategy at the deadline this year, was a bit 'yeah but nah' as no-one really approached and I decided that I'd worked the trade lines hard up to the last week or so and ran out of steam! My biggest concern was twofold, breaking up my core and more importantly perhaps was that no other big trades went down that upset our chances! I didn't want to read that Eddie had pulled off a mega-trade that brought Jordan to the Bucks or Adam now had more towers than most of us have centers! Oh well.. in that regards it was a quietly successful trade deadline!
Injuries
Benny Borgmann 2
Jim Pollard 1
(22-33) Washington Gene 29 25 31 19 - 104 (Dominique Wilkins 27)
(24-31) LA Stars 13 28 24 29 - 94 (James Worthy 19)
If the Generals come out and play like this the rest of the way they have a shot at it... problem is they haven't been consistent all year so there's no reason to think they'll manage it from here on in - more likely they'll play spoiler for teams with playoff hopes - the Stars are fading...
(29-27) Memphis Sounds 34 39 25 23 - 121 (Chris Mullin 27)
(42-13) Milwaukee Bucks 34 35 34 43 - 146 (Mark Price 30)
Bucks are still favourites for the season 4 title, but the top spot on power ratings has been Seattle for some time now; adding Bird was a real coup and now the mix seems right everyone needs to be on high alert... even the Bucks. Price has been a stud this season and lights up the Sounds for 30. Mullin is one of my favourites and was surprised to see him leave Lakerland...
( 8-46) Kansas City Ste 23 31 33 38 - 125 (Bob Davies 19)
(22-32) Brooklyn Indian 38 28 38 37 - 141 (Kevin Durant 30)
Brooklyn won't make the playoffs but with Durant and Robertson, Kiki and Aldridge they're a nightmare matchup from this point in. Kansas are pushing for those 11 wins but most will undoubtedly come at home.
(13-41) Wilkes-Barre Ba 25 26 21 35 - 107 (Jeff Hornacek 18)
(37-17) LA Lakers 38 38 29 27 - 132 (Tim Duncan 30)
Speaking of those Lakers, don't count them out yet. Duncan goes off for 30 but the best player on the court was Chris Webber who matched Duncan's 30 in just 17 shots. Webber is a solid star in the league, but his fit behind the twin towers or out of position at 3 may not be as good as Mullin. Time will tell, who'd want to face this team in the playoffs? Funnily enough I have a suspicion it will be a first round matchup with the Sonics!!
(34-20) Scranton Miners 30 25 23 29 - 107 (Geoff Petrie 20)
(29-26) Denver Rockets 29 33 35 22 - 119 (Michael Jordan 26)
Denver is starting to look like a playoff team again and another nice win over the always tough Scranton outfit should get them cooking. MJ is looking more like MJ this year. Dr J wasn't his usual self today and when he fouled out the comeback hopes twindled...
(35-20) Hawaii Chiefs 25 25 17 23 - 90 (Joe Fulks 25)
(35-21) Minnesota Piper 20 30 32 21 - 103 (Tracy McGrady 23)
Tough loss for the Chiefs who've been on a run recently - two similar teams in the ABA go toe to toe but the game got blown open in the third as McGrady got hot. Hawaii still has an edge on Pipers in the standings having one less loss... Hawaii's celebrated short roster lost out to the Piper's long roster.
(31-25) Baltimore Bulle 35 25 26 26 - 112 (Paul Westphal 27)
(21-35) Texas Chaparral 22 27 31 28 - 108 (Dirk Nowitzki 23)
Will the Bullets make the playoffs? I don't know, but if they do they will provide a challenge to their first round opponents, but more importantly this team will get better year by year with Stockton as their engine. Texas's great start is a long way back, but they're another spoiler team you don't want in the last week or so of the season. If Dirk gets hot and Rose is playing they're a handful.
(18-36) Dayton Metropol 34 31 40 28 - 133 (Al Green 28)
(32-25) Trenton Tigers 32 32 29 29 - 122 (Elgin Baylor 29)
Stunner in Trenton as the Dayton outfit rolls in and upsets the heavily favoured Tigers and drops them back. Elgin Baylor is one of my favourite and most overlooked Lakers of all time. I tried hard to bring him across to the Knicks this year but Coach O'Donnell (rightfully) held strong!
(35-21) Chicago Crusade 27 35 31 32 - 125 (Charlie Scott 26)
(30-27) Golden State Wa 32 28 30 30 - 120 (Adrian Dantley 24)
Golden State Warriors have been stinking it up in recent games, going from a hot streak to a 'bum's rush' where they can't seem to buy a win. Tough set of opponents recently but you know Kwame's seething! Great win for the Crusaders though on the road, and they gain some ground on some of the ABA teams not having a great day today. Kwame was about the most active GM at trade deadline trying to work out deals, my only issue was the Coulby and Kobe are not the same coach...
