Day 49 of this 11th season... no massive standout single performances today, but a few 30 point attempts and some good all-round games, maybe even an upset or two.
Unlike Stan's write-up I'm not going to mention my day or week, but it's been interesting; my 70 year old dad had a stroke on Monday to get things off on the wrong foot (man, I hate hospitals), my gorgeous wife Kim jetted off to the capital for a conference and I've been looking after the kids, my dog, my mum and the wine cellar :) Still, my ex-wife decided she was going to up and move away from a few minutes away to 3 hours away - every cloud has a silver lining and us and the kids will be better off for it!

(16- 9) Syracuse Nation 35 19 29 45 - 128 (LeBron James 28)
(16-10) Washington Wiza 28 23 30 37 - 118 (Antonio McDyess 22)
Marquee matchup between Lebron's Nationals and the wonderous Wizards as both teams try to avoid slipping to double-digit losses. Ironically the capital proved unlucky for the home team and a 10 point loss hands the Wizards their tenth loss. Irony can be ironic sometimes. LBJ does the damage as usual for the Nationals, nice efficient game and near triple double. This Syracuse outfit deserves some consideration for most improved and a large part of that is down to James's improvements again this year. Wiz have also improved this year - I wanted Ty to trade my McDyess earlier in the year, I think he may have been wise to hold on to him!
(16- 9) Virginia Squire 38 28 26 23 - 115 (Larry Bird 23)
(14-12) Carolina Cougar 26 30 30 21 - 107 (Carmelo Anthony 24)
I love Larry Bird as a player and you had to admire the ugly son of a b1tch, but I'm not sure about the comparison article some of you have been debating. Put simply it's like comparing apples and oranges, they certainly played different positions and polar opposite styles but both were highly competitive and both deserve to be top 10 all-time in this scribe's humble opinion, but beyond the impact to the game I wouldn't want to compare these two. I think it's all highly subjective on the era you really started watching basketball. For me it started with Bird and Magic, hence they're both in my top 5 starting 5 of all-time with Kareem (I never saw Wilt), Tim Duncan (though ask me again in a few years on the PF spot...). The final spot goes to Jordan. My backups incidentally are Oscar, West, Dr J, Lebron and Wilt. Honorable mentions go to Stockton, Malone, Cousy, Kobe, Gilmore, damn I could keep going for half the UBAL! Kind of went off on one there... Melo was tough but not enough for the Cougars to stop the Squires from inching back to the top of the UBAL ABA standings.
(12-14) Toronto Raptors 25 21 38 30 - 114 (Kevin Durant 29)
( 5-20) Carbondale Aces 25 33 22 26 - 106 (Carl Braun 32)
Meanwhile the Aces try to sell off the few useful pieces they have this season for the chance of building for the future to go with their lottery pick. Toronto ride the incredible Kevin Durant to a solid away win in the process. Personally I'm a big fan of Carl Braun, a very versatile guy that can play 2 or 3 and later in his career the 1 spot too. Tops the thirty point club too today.
(14-11) Baltimore Claws 30 28 26 15 - 99 (Charles Barkley 26)
(10-16) New Jersey Amer 28 31 31 31 - 121 (David Lee 25)
Claws would love to get closer to Ginny and Utah but they get a thumping in Jersey today and that sucks for Danno. Chuck is playing pretty well but meets his match today in young David Lee. Is David Lee about to break out in the NBA, nah, not convinced. Pau Gasol is also going to have his best season this year? Nah not convinced of that theory either. Gasol started on a tear last year but faded pretty bad until injury gave him the rest. Today he was top 10 along with Chuckster in the losing effort as the role players failed to step up.
(12-13) Minnesota Muski 29 25 31 32 - 117 (Kiki Vandeweghe 25)
(13-13) Oakland Oaks 23 23 37 25 - 108 (Paul Pressey 19)
Strange way to .500 for the Oaks, one minute they look impressive and then not so like today. Gotta like the way the Muskies have rounded into form though and they look pretty good right now! Kiki has always been a scorer and today his 25 leads all scorers in the game in securing the win. Is Tony going to unleash Dwight Howard this season? It seems like he's playing but a few minutes a game; might as well trade him Tony - give me a buzz if you want me to take him back...
( 7-19) Indiana Pacers 24 20 32 29 - 105 (Chris Bosh 20)
(11-15) St Louis Spirit 21 36 31 25 - 113 (Hal Greer 31)
Greer was the name of my (evil) ex-wife so forgive me if I cringe every time I see the name appear. I didn't draft Hal in the UBAS purely on the name which is an emotional decision when I probably should have used my head! I do have to admit that Hal Greer is a damn fine baller though, and his 31 was the second highest total out of all game stonight and led the scorers in the league with a home win in St Louis. Bosh leads the Indy Pacers in a good sporting effort that fell short again.
(14-12) San Antonio Spu 25 20 36 26 - 107 (Russell Westbrook 26)
(10-15) Denver Nuggets 24 28 23 24 - 99 (Bill Sharman 17)
Spurs two games above .500 again, can they hold it for the rest of the way and book a playoff spot? Not sure, but with their young core, they'll be around for a while win or lose this season. Westbrook is not my kind of PG but he's a talent all-right. Good solid road win in Denver (does the altitude affect UBA programming Jim?).
(16- 9) Philadelphia 76 25 32 19 20 - 96 (Stephon Marbury 21)
(14-12) Harlem Rens 30 24 33 22 - 109 (Don Buse 23)
Harlem gets another win without its leader Wilt and as usual the reason is the amazing Don Buse. How do some coaches find these guys? I surely don't... I try to build chemistry and complimentary pieces but I have to confess I don't know enough about basketball history to claim the more obscure guys in its annals. Still, I've got to consider myself pretty lucky to have two of my all-time top 5 in my starting 5 (Magic and Duncan), how many of you can make that claim? Rens sit a respectable 2 games above .500 and bring down a very tough Philly squad in the process. Harlem are very tough at home this season with or without the Dipper. The 76ers have been very good in the opening quarter season, can they keep this pace up for the remainder of the year and stay in touch with the big boys in the NBA? Time will tell.
(11-15) Chicago Bulls 34 36 30 25 - 125 (Robert Parish 21)
(11-14) Pittsburgh Cond 23 39 25 27 - 114 (Paul Pierce 23)
If your team sucks, then take a tip from trader Tony's rebuilding process... he gets another impressive victory for his young squad today, led by Parish in one of his down seasons before he rediscovers himself. Pittsburgh stay on 11 wins to the disappointment of their home fans. Paul Pierce leads them today but he's a dick.
