UBAL 10/128

You should know by now that Weds are my backup days (yes, remarkably so given that they don't seem to belong to anyone else either...) so the writeups are always shorter.  Today will be no exception so no musical interludes even if they are as talented as my Kiwi friends Brett and Jermaine...

Injuries
Michael Redd 5 (Ankle Ligament Sprain)
Allen Iverson 2 (Face Laceration) - Couple of starters cause issues for the Claws?
Kevin Love 5 (Personal Reasons) - Love lost?  Problems for Indy?
Muggsy Bogues 1 (Thumb Ligament Sprain)
Tom Gugliotta 1 (Patella Tendinitis)

(44-22) BOSTON 21 23 29 24 - 97 (Scottie Pippen 21)
(58- 9) HOUSTON 32 32 31 25 - 120 (Karl Malone 24)
Marquee matchup was a fairly one-sided affair as Malone and the Rockets keep their respective domination over the league.  Boston are a good team but Houston are better. Pippen is a gel guy that Boston uses well but Malone is the best player in the league this year bar none in this writer's opinion.  Stockton fell one turn-over off a triple double in an unusually careless night for the toughest little point guard in the league.

(27-36) ROCHESTER 28 27 15 33 - 103 (Ralph Simpson 23)
(45-20) CHICAGO 31 38 32 26 - 127 (Rick Barry 32)
Maybe yesterday was just a bad day in the office for Chicago as they get back to winning ways as Barry throws a bunch of underarm shots in and carries them to a comfy win at home and move the Royals further from that elusive .500 mark. Havlicek was mustard in the game and Magic nearly had a triple double but doesn't seem to be dominating like he was early in the season.

(36-29) TORONTO 28 40 35 36 - 139 (Otis Birdsong 29)
( 7-60) SAN ANTONIO 37 25 32 24 - 118 (Archie Clark 25)
San Antonio collects their league leading 60th silver medal in the regular season and looks hell-bent on achieving the unthinkable in notching less than 10 wins for an entire season.  Otis is a really good player this year I would have liked to keep hold of but figured I needed to get planning ahead - great pickup for Toronto though.

(33-34) SYRACUSE 23 28 30 27 - 108 (LeBron James 27)
(34-31) MINNESOTA 32 32 28 35 - 127 (Phil Smith 28)
One of these teams may end up the season below .500 - actually both may, today Syracuse gets forced under the water-line as Minnesota presses home it's advantage.  Phil Smith outscores Lebron, but Lebron was statistically better in the loss.

(41-25) BALTIMORE 28 34 24 31 - 117 (Allen Iverson 24)
(40-26) MEMPHIS 32 37 25 40 - 134 (Tracy McGrady 30)
I really wanted to keep TMac too but Memphis made the right move by getting him as he's a real scorer and very talented in season 10 before disappearing at the end of the season.  Today he and AI had a fun duel... think the Claws may miss him for the next couple as well as gunner Redd.  Today Memphis got the win and will be in the playoffs (so will the Claws but at what placing?).

(21-45) PORTLAND 17 26 23 30 - 96 (Bob Love 15)
(51-17) HARLEM 29 32 20 32 - 113 (Wilt Chamberlain 23)
Harlem and Wilt are hot right now and they are crushing opposition and holding them under a 100 points with alarming regularity.  Does Coach Kwame deliberately use a crap lineup in the first half of the season to create momentum?  Could be, but it certainly seems to be working this year as they are as hot as any team not from Houston.

(39-25) INDIANA 34 24 36 27 - 121 (George Gervin 26)
(34-32) CAROLINA 41 28 37 34 - 140 (Hersey Hawkins 32)
Indy have a solid record but when Love is out they look decidedly shaky.  A hefty loss to playoff hopeful Carolina doesn't help, but without love is there hope?  Hawkins was deadly today and leads the charts with his super sharp shooting.

(15-51) NEW YORK 26 31 16 31 - 104 (EddieA Johnson 21)
(22-44) SEATTLE 28 30 22 29 - 109 (Mike Green 19)
I don't think I've done a writeup for NY this year where Eddie A hasn't top scored for them.  Is it a sign of how good he is or how weak the Knicks are?  Not sure but today they lose a close one in Seattle.

(41-23) OAKLAND 32 25 21 23 - 101 (Kevin McHale 21)
(30-37) ANAHEIM 27 31 12 21 - 91 (Ron Artest 18)
Oakland gets a solid win which they tend to do any time McHale and Howard outplay the opposing team forwards.  Howard leads them on defense and McHale never saw a low post opportunity he didn't take (wasn't his nickname the Black Hole because he never passed out?).  Solid road win over the Amigos by holding down their potent offence - credit that to the big fella.
