So you're probably wondering about now why I've suddenly gone soft? Is it the natural disaster or election in the US that I hope won't affect any of you (although the election just might)? No, nothing so far reaching, but in my own universe things have shifted and that makes you take stock for sure.
After a couple of years of legal wranglings last week saw me in court fighting for the right to give my children what I believe is their best chance in life. I've honestly never been so exhausted in my life, it felt like triple overtime for the championship of the world and there were no subs... Anyway, me and the children who will know spend the vast majority of their lives growing up in the best environment I can provide thank the rest of the World for their patience. I thank my family, and that includes my wider family spread over the world (many of whom I've never met and several I never will). Funny that in the winning moment it doesn't feel like a victory, there's no fanfare and celebration. But you know, if you're in it for the glory, you had it all wrong, this is about earning the honour of having the toughest of jobs; being a good parent.
Here's to you my fellow fathers, brothers and sons - now let's do battle!
Injuries
Alvin Robertson 1 (Nose Broken)
Thaddeus Young 2 (Shin Splints)
(22-27) UTAH 24 33 22 26 - 105 (Robert Parish 29)
(23-26) PHOENIX 48 26 41 23 - 138 (Sam Cassell 34)
Poor Utah coach Young was so exhausted he could barely raise himself from the bench for this one sided affair. The most lopsided loss of the season comes against a Suns team who are hot (?) off a loss to the (black sheep of our family) Spurs. Utah's heart wasn't in it, the commissioner made a claim that Utah would make the playoffs this year but not this way. The team is playing more together than they have all year, but if your heart isn't in the fight you may as well forget it... Sam Cassell was the man for Phoenix and the star of the day. Parish wasn't far behind but TD was not himself and the new heart of the Stars needs to be just that. Will either squad make .500 again this year? It's a dogs life...
(32-16) INDIANA 24 29 31 32 - 116 (George Gervin 39)
(29-21) MEMPHIS 21 30 27 23 - 101 (Adrian Dantley 21)
Indy with a strong second half and a massive haul by the Ice Man get a great win over young Memphis on the road. The ABA doesn't look anything like as strong as the NBA, but Indiana will be a tough matchup if they can overcome Oakland, Dallas and San Diego to take the West (sorry ABA).
(17-33) PORTLAND 27 21 26 26 - 100 (Bob Love 19)
(43- 8) HOUSTON 25 40 35 40 - 140 (Karl Malone 29)
Adam is commissioner as well as Houston Rockets coach. Have you ever seem a team put together like this one? He's in charge of our family and like any good dad he knows how to put down an upstart when he sees one. 40 point thwarting of the Blazers with two 40 point quarters and 75 in the second half. Malone has been the best player in the league this year regardless of what the MVP rankings may tell you. There's a few father son combos in the league and the O'Donnells are always great value.
(34-16) NEW ORLEANS 33 35 25 26 - 119 (Eric Murdock 20)
(24-25) MINNESOTA 31 31 17 36 - 115 (Kenny Sears 31)
This was probably the game of the day, but it wasnt that pretty along the way. Minnesota set season high for free throws made (57). New Orleans set season high for fouls (51). Kenny Sears equals the all time UBAL record for free throws made (23), but somehow the Jazz hold on for the victory despite a furious finish to the game where all they could do was foul and hope enough free throws were missed to hang on.
(11-40) PHILADELPHIA 27 23 27 21 - 98 (Dolph Schayes 25)
(35-17) HARLEM 23 29 24 31 - 107 (Bob Boozer 26)
Harlem aren't the best team in the league right now, but you know they're going to be might dangerous in playoff times. Coach Kwame builds his team differently to most of us, but he sure knows how to make a tough team. He's the bully big brother of our family some times, but he sure makes you play your best if you want to win. Philly played well for an 11 win team on the road and were right in it till near the end when Boozer and Wilt took over. Respect earned if not the victory.
(22-27) DETROIT 28 22 28 28 - 106 (Earl Monroe 23)
(27-22) BALTIMORE 29 33 31 34 - 127 (Michael Redd 26)
One of two famous Kiks in the league; coach Danny is as hot headed as his world famous dad and as colourful a family member as we have. He was mad at me earlier this year because I liked another trade more than the one he offered, he may have been right, but I wasn't sure whether to be pissed off or amused. Looking back I think it's mostly because he really believes in his players like any great coach, but mostly it's because he's as competitive a brother as any in this league, he's just like the middle one who has more to prove... I'm a fan of his team as they do it in their own style and today they easily overcome an up and down Detroit outfit. Will Detroit battle to .500 this year?
(32-17) OAKLAND 22 15 31 39 - 107 (Kevin McHale 20)
(24-26) CAROLINA 25 15 28 30 - 98 (Ty Lawson 22)
Tony's another brother of mine. He's a Welsh git, but I try not to hold that against him! His Oakland outfit is so Tony too, they're more successful than I could possibly make them or probably anyone else for that matter, yet Tony does it his way, he remains on a different plane that makes him infuriating at times as he always takes the high ground. Today they push Carolina the wrong way from .500 ball on the road behind their interior work as always. Little Ty Lawson rips through their guards to keep it close... But not enough down the stretch.
(27-24) ORLANDO 42 38 29 20 - 129 (Roger Brown 23)
(15-34) NEW YORK 29 20 34 25 - 108 (EddieA Johnson 18)
Jim is frustrated we hear. Jim is someone we should all pay credit to for the UBA program that we use. He is our rich uncle in that he paves the way for us to play. He's also a purist to the ratings, this year has seemed to buck the trends of the PER and UBA ratings in who has been successful (rockets aside) and that has made it especially hard on his Orlando outfit, but if they can get in and out of the first round of the playoffs who knows? Today a great road bash over NY, but only three games above .500.
(30-22) KENTUCKY 29 12 29 13 - 83 (Chris Webber 20)
(37-14) BOSTON 24 21 34 22 - 101 (Al Jefferson 26)
Finally the grandpa of the league gets to step up and play. Kentucky has hit 30 wins but gramps wants more and you better respect your elders or there's trouble. When Kik Senior gets his teeth into something or someone watch out, but it only happens when you disrespect your elder and betters! Personally I love the cantankerous old bastard and I know if he hadn't done all the work he's done over the years we probably wouldn't be hear in this family. He's been the glue, now his role has changed but don't forget the respect when you deal with him. Today Kareem sets a season high for blocks (11) but Grandpa's old legs are no match for a hungry Boston outfit on the old garden floor. Could be preview of playoffs and whilst I'd never write off Kentucky, Boston are definitely in with a shot this year. Fine game from Al Jefferson today.
Wish all teams had played today so I could mention more of my rellies (it's relatives kiwi style), but the guys I skipped your just my cuzzies (cousins kiwi style) and hopefully we'll get to know each other better as we go through our UBA lives.
My last thought for the day is if you are a father, hug your suns and daughters now; they truly are the most important things in your life. You can never pay back your parents, our job is to pay it forward through our kids.
