UBAL 10 Day 3

UBAS Day 3 Rolls Around..

Is it more of the same or two early to tell?  All the injuries are rolling out early - this is to be expected from players who will miss lots of games (like Bird) but plenty of little ones too; hey good news if your player only misses a couple of games, best to get them out the way early!

Injuries
Troy Murphy 1 (Knee Soreness)
Mark Aguirre 1 (Personal Reasons)
Roy Hibbert 1 (Team Suspension – public statements detrimental to team)
Brook Lopez 9 (Contract Dispute)
Joe Caldwell 4 (Rib Muscle Sprain)

( 1- 1) LOS ANGELES 26 31 29 29 - 115 (Ray Allen 24)
( 2- 0) MEMPHIS 30 30 36 26 - 122 (Devin Harris 24)

Memphis become the first team to 2-0 as they hold off a determined LA squad looking to unleash sweet shooting Ray Allen and the power of TD down low.  Memphis played team-ball to get the win with Devin Harris orchestrating the offence.

( 1- 1) NEW JERSEY 31 28 27 28 - 114 (Warren Jabali 20)
( 0- 2) ANAHEIM 30 20 28 31 - 109 (Ron Artest 23)

Anaheim was looking for a better start to this, but after 2 games a piece one of these two teams had to move to 0-2.  Ron Ron was solid (he is) and 3rd on the hotshots but Jabali and a balanced attack led the visiting Americans and levelled their record.

( 1- 1) MIAMI 27 21 38 28 - 114 (Charlie Scott 23)
( 1- 1) PHILADELPHIA 31 29 33 37 - 130 (Dolph Schayes 27)
Miami look to improve to 2-0 visiting winless Philly but they ran into a determined 76er outfit today and both teams end up 1-1.  Dolph Schayes was a force and Stevie Francis dazzled as Shaq looked lack-lustre in the loss.

( 2- 0) MINNESOTA 28 21 26 28 - 103 (Jerry Stackhouse 24)
( 1- 1) TORONTO 25 32 26 18 - 101 (Paul Millsap 19)
Way to go Minny!  Great game between two unbeaten teams (okay that happens at this point of the season) with neither team wanting to let this one go.  Sam Lacey anchored the defense and Stack scored the points to edge Millsap and the young gun Raps.  Game was decided by Phil Smith's elbow shot with 5 on the clock and Derrick Rose was unable to get off the last minute heave in time as Minnesota played swarming desperation D.

( 1- 1) CHICAGO 30 35 37 24 - 126 (Rick Barry 37)
( 0- 2) ORLANDO 25 35 30 32 - 122 (Kevin Garnett 26)
Chicago gets back on track with a great away win over tough Orlando.  The Magic were credited with the great off-season trade that bought the Big Ticket to Disneyland, but despite playing well, the team hasn't got going yet as they try and get over the locker-room loss of Hakeem.  For Chicago there are many offensive weapons, today Rick Barry brought his A-game and shot down Orlando while Havlicek provided just enough stops for the visiting Bulls to sneak the win.

( 2- 0) BOSTON 25 28 29 30 - 112 (Al Jefferson 20)
( 0- 2) SAN ANTONIO 25 33 18 24 - 100 (ML Carr 18)
Ooh Boston looks good this year and they travel to San Antonio and get past the much improved Spurs.  Game was a lot closer than it looked with a surge in the last 5 minutes and a 10-0 burst behind big Al Jefferson, Mark Jackson and Scottie Pippen to put the game out of reach.  Spurs 0-2 but they will get better!

( 1- 1) PORTLAND 22 30 24 25 - 101 (Sam Jones 23)
( 2- 0) CLEVELAND 26 26 32 32 - 116 (Dan Issel 22)
Okay, so Cleveland looks scary good too.  The off-season trade that brought in Dr J is going to put plenty of teams on red-alert and they will win a ton of games and challenge for that number one spot.  Today the visiting Trailblazers gave it all they had and the game was level at the half, but Issel, KJ and the Dr is a wicked trio that slowly edged the game away from Portland and they never look truly challenged in the 4th quarter maintaining a 10 point plus lead.

( 1- 1) HOUSTON 24 27 24 26 - 101 (Jimmy Jones 26)
( 0- 2) PITTSBURGH 30 26 17 23 - 96 (Mel Daniels 19)
Houston wasn't going to stay winless for long and JJ (great pick-up) was firing on all cylinders as they pick up a close away win in Pittsburgh.  Jones had the points but the familiar pairing of Stockton and Malone did everything else as they both notched unsurprising double doubles.  Mel D fought back but it simply wasn't enough for Pitt as they drop to 0-2.

( 1- 1) KENTUCKY 25 26 30 22 - 103 (Donnie Freeman 21)
( 1- 1) SEATTLE 24 29 32 31 - 116 (Tom Heinsohn 21)
Kentucky's win-streak ends at 1.  A visit to the sleepy city is not going to be so easy against the improving Sonics.  In fairness the Colonels were just off tonight, Kareem fouled out without a block and Wilkins went from hero to zero as his shot was way off (3-13).  For the Sonics Tom Heinsohn was mint as he tallied 21 points on 8-11 shooting with a good all-round game.  Griffin got a double-double..
