The charts tell us that Cousy was the man again today and Gilmore was number two - that's not a good look for Texas and surely bodes against them.. ex-season one Knick Felix continues to play well and Hardaway fires off on offense so maybe this isn't over yet.. top two defenders are both on Texas.. this could be a close one again..
First quarter was a familiar one for the Knicks in these playoffs as again they came out of the gates fast behind Cousy and ex-Chap Cedric Maxwell who chipped in 16 points. The lead at one point was 15 and NY control the first quarter 33-20.
Second quarter though and the Texans make an early run with Phil Smith again providing a lift with 23 much needed points. Still the Knicks seem to counter the best run the Chaps have and the half finishes up with the Knicks still holding a nine point lead.
This really was a game of two halves though as the Chaps suddenly got fired up and decided this was not going to be an easy walk for the Knicks and reminded everyone that they are the reigning champs and are not about to hand over the crown to another king (self proclaimed or otherwise) without a fight. 77 second half points catapulted them from behind to a comfortable 17 point win for a 128-111 final line, outscoring the Knicks by 13 in the final quarter to seal the deal. 11 players scored for the Chaps as they used a balanced and team attack that was missing in New York. The turning point for the Knicks was losing Alvin Robertson to his sixth foul late in the third on a risky decision by Coach Young to leave the all-defensive specialist on the floor to try and slow down the streaking Chap guards. The strategy backfired with two quick fouls on Alvin and the Knicks struggling to slow down the guard play with Cousy on his own, even throwing in seldom used World B Free to no effect. For the first time in this playoffs and pretty much all season long an opponent had more steals than the Knicks (okay, just 11 to 10) and the Knicks were sloppy with possession.
The big question is does this carry on to game 4 or will the Knicks pick themselves up and exert their will back on this series and season with a big away win tomorrow?
One things for sure, after three games, this series couldn't be any closer..
