Welcome to UBAS Tuesdays!!
With the various browsers, software ideology, Microsoft and Open Office issues I thought Tuesdays would be better served by the use of an official blog so here we are.. online.. now the hope is that everyone can access this (even an old Kik'er!).
If you haven't been following lately we know that it takes seven guys to replace the artist formerly known as BBJ (in fact one of them is his alter ego, so that says something!); that means a few of us get the regular spot to rant and rave or talk other (frankly inferior) sports to a somewhat captive audience. Tuesday's are mine. Which is weird of course because they fall on a Wednesday to me, being anything up to about 18 hours ahead of some of you in New Zealand (yes, further south than New York and even further than New Orleans - the real deeeeep South).
So here we are Tuesday in the UBAS; let's stop my waffle and get down to it.. I'm in the Airport lounge this morning awaiting my flight 'across the ditch' to Sydney. That's a short throw but such is the remoteness of NZ in the big scheme of things it's still 1500 miles away..

(17-42) Brooklyn Indian 26 23 25 18 - 92 (Deron Williams 23)
(32-29) Indianapolis Ka 27 31 18 23 - 99 (Phil Rabin 19)
The Indians haven't been too good this year but they fight to the end behind DWills away against a tough Indy team. Got to be honest I had Indy pegged higher above .500 even with their change of ownership and tight division. The middle was controlled as usual by Bill Russell. Russell was a surprise pick at number 3 in the original draft.. too high? I think so, but still you need a dominant big man and he certainly is that on the defensive end. My favourite Kautsky though is Alex Groza - he plays hard and was the difference today taking control down the stretch to put to rest any late surge from the Indians.
(31-30) New York Rens 27 27 32 25 - 111 (Charles Barkley 27)
(12-47) Original Celtic 20 29 25 23 - 97 (Earl Monroe 24)
The other NY team continues to show they are on the up against an Original Celtic team that's just not yet ready. Chuck was the man; unstoppable on offense and even picking up the steals in his efficient 32 minutes. Earl Monroe was really the only main resistance from the Celtics - 50% more assists for NY is usually a good indicator a win is coming.
(24-35) Oshkosh All Sta 30 26 25 25 - 106 (John Beckman 19)
(35-23) Golden State Wa 39 22 26 42 - 129 (Walter Davis 26)
The battle for playoffs spots in the NBA division is fierce and it's going to be a blood-bath down the stretch. As it stands teams 10 games over .500 won't make it in - wow! Kwame knows this and his Warriors played with a sense of urgency today. Bobby Jones, TP and Walter Davis lit it up offensively and exploded with all of the team's 42 points in the fourth quarter. Key reserve for Oshkosh was Iggy who came in the 2nd quarter and was ppm until taking the bench early in the 4th with the outcome decided. The rest of the team forgot their reputation for playing tough each game and let the Warriors run away at the end.
(35-26) Boston Celtics 25 18 26 33 - 102 (Tom Gugliotta 24)
(28-31) Charlotte Bobca 24 23 32 31 - 110 (Keith VanHorn 26)
Have the surprising Celtics run out of puff? The cinderella story from the NBA seems to be close to midnight as they lose again on the road and drop out of the playoffs standings if it were to start today. Charlotte are a good team on their day and their court and behind Van Horn and his high socks they were able to hold off the Celts. Check out Oscar Robertson's 18 points and 14 assists; that's the real reason that Boston couldn't get close down the stretch. Googs and Mickey deserve a mention for their attempts.
(27-33) Harlem Globetro 24 21 22 26 - 93 (Joe Fulks 32)
(20-39) Washington Gene 27 33 16 24 - 100 (Dan Issel 19)
A low scoring affair in the capital as the Globies failed to dazzle and were second best to the Generals after a slow start (45 first half points). Sherman White was mustard with his 13 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 blocks and 4 steals - great defensive performance as he patrolled the paint for the Generals. Dwight Howard had a good double double but something about him has always bothered me; this year in the NBA he has been sometimes amazing, sometimes silly and just not serious enough for me - I like my players John McEnroesque with that Jerry West look not that goofy smile. Now UBAS is all about stats so surely here Dwight should flourish? Not yet, but early days for the young pup.
(27-34) Philadelphia Sp 25 28 31 21 - 105 (David Thompson 27)
(26-33) Cincinnati Roya 31 29 34 37 - 131 (Norm VanLier 23)
Two teams that would like to have been more involved in playoff talk battle off and the Royals romp away in the second half. Cincy has been decimated by injuries this year with the Hawk and Magic down for large portions. Good news is that Connie is back next trip but this one was all about the team effort with 6 players in double figures, two with 9 and another with 7 - another recipe for success (although usually cos the game's a blowout!). DT was excellent in defeat but Van Lier was unstoppable shooting 80% from the floor for his 23.
(30-32) Sheboygan Redsk 30 35 36 35 - 136 (LeBron James 33)
(31-29) Chicago Crusade 28 32 27 31 - 118 (Kenny Sears 20)
Two teams fighting for that respectability mark of .500 and the playoff sniff that comes with it in the ABA. Today was Lebron's day. He's immature, kind of a dick and still always looks like raw talent to me, but he is damn effective and having a great real season in the NBA this year. Another player who takes himself more seriously than the game. This one was about Chicago's inability to grab a defensive board as they were outrebounded by 17 in the game. Stoudemire provided some light resistance by scoring but he's a long way from a lockdown defender.
(41-19) Trenton Tigers 32 33 25 24 - 114 (Louie Dampier 15)
(39-20) Akron Firestone 21 36 31 32 - 120 (Jerry West 32)
The Firestone get a good win after a mysterious drop in form recently behind my all-time favourite little guy Jerry West. West was MVP today as he was relentless in defending home court against the very good Tigers. West was best known for his scoring ability but he was a tenacious defender who never (and still doesn't) smiled during business hours. Today he backs that up with 7 steals and 2 blocks - wow! The Tigers suffered when Neil Johnston (their best player on the day) fouled out early in the fourth and sealed their fate. Akron will aim for 40 next game to join the exclusive club.
(39-20) Anderson Packer 26 34 28 24 - 112 (Wilt Chamberlain 25)
(37-23) Seattle Superso 24 28 24 23 - 99 (Nate Thurmond 20)
Also in the hunt for 40 are the Pack who are rolling right now. At one point they were third place behind Fort Wayne and Akron; but now they're back hunting as you'd expect from the wolf pack. This win over the (most improved?) Seattle team away from home was most impressive. Dave called out to the league that Wilt was rising and he may just be right as the Sonics found no answer for the big cheese as he poured in 25 to go with 23 big rebounds and 4 blocks. 20-20 games today are reasonably rare still (thanks to Love for bringing them back) but Wilt took that as a half-time target not a season long quest. How would he have handled the modern game? I don't know but I would have loved to see him and Shaq battle it out! Seattle was a little off today as Kobe and Rondo aren't quite ready to take it on yet. Still Thurmond and Boozer were tough inside battling against the Stilt.
In closing; hope you enjoyed your Tuesday edition - you can follow and post feedback on Blogger or hit me back directly :)

The Boston Celtics Cinderella story isn't over yet. Bob Lanier was missing this game as his shoes were worn out & Nike couldn't get a new pair of 22's in time.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff.. I'd love to see you guys make it into the playoffs! Especially if you could match up against the Lakers :)
